The Reds have claimed infielder D.J. Peterson off waivers from the White Sox. Cincinnati transferred reliever Drew Storen to the 60-day disabled list in a corresponding move. The White Sox also outrighted catcher Alfredo Gonzalez to Double-A Birmingham, reducing their 40-man total to 38, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune tweets.
This is the second time this year a club has claimed Peterson. He previously went to the White Sox on Aug. 6 after the Mariners designated him for assignment at the end of July. For Seattle, moving on from the 25-year-old meant cutting ties with a 2013 first-round pick and a player who was once a highly regarded prospect. Peterson struggled this season with the Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate and did the same in his 97-plate appearance stint with the White Sox’s top farm team, giving him a .252/.315/.404 batting line in 518 PAs. The righty-swinger still hasn’t ascended to the majors, and he won’t report to the big league club upon his arrival to the Reds, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer (on Twitter).
The 25-year-old Gonzalez also hasn’t gotten past the minors since signing with the Astros as an international free agent in 2008. This year, his first in the Chicago organization, the Venezuelan hit .208/.306/.301 in 249 trips to the plate with Birmingham.

The Reds signed a DJ? Did they let go of their organist?
pickandersen
Any idea who’s off to Chicago? Probably not much.
Pkindaclub
It’s a waiver claim so the white sox gave him up for nothing
myaccount
It wasn’t a trade.

The Mariners traded all their good prospects and kept this guy who ended up flopping. He was supposed to be cant miss at one point

Reds + White Sox = Red Sox

Actually Pink Sox.

I’m trying to be funny, and you just ruined the moment. Insert:sad face emoji
Like, the Pink Sox isn’t even a team.
AZPat
Chin up bigcubsfan, your post was the funniest ever. Plus, the Pink Sox are a softball team in Kansas or a medical condition that cubs players have in the off season.

He probably didn’t know you were trying to funny, bc it wasnt.

Just the beginning of the next round of roster purges for the rebuilding White Sox as the 2017 season winds down. They have 3 players on the 60-day DL who will need to reactivated following the season, two of whom figure to remain on the reserve list in CF Charlie Tilson and RP Zach Putnam. The third, veteran C Geovany Soto will be a free agent following the season.
The White Sox also figure to lose the last group of veteran pitchers they signed to short term deals in 2017 including Mike Pelfrey who will be a FA following the conclusion of the World Series. Journeyman relievers Al Alburquerque, Danny Farquhar and Chris Volstad all have some remaining arbitration eligibility but also figure to be removed from the 40-man roster sooner rather than later. A few more “fringe” players also figure to be let go early into the offseason.

The Reds are about to have their own purge and Peterson might be part of it as well. Attempt to pass him through waivers like the Sox just did.

Solid reference of White Sox prospects most likely to be added to the clubs 40-man roster this offseason due to Rule 5 eligibility. It also contains a list of those most likely to be removed: southsidesox.com/2017/8/18/16152222/the-40-man-ros…

Putnam has to be non-tendered. He’s going to miss most of next season. Non-tender him and re-sign him to a minor league deal.

The same might also be said for the other veteran “Zach” in the White Sox bullpen, Petricka, who has spent much of the past two seasons on the disabled list with an assortment of injuries. It’s unfortunate because Petricka is a local kid who grew up as a White Sox fan and I always tend to root a little harder for players who actually want to play for their favorite team. Same might be said for CF prospect Charlie Tilson who has only managed to played a few innings for the White Sox with an assortment of leg injuries that started in his first contest with the team shortly after the 2016 summer trade deadline.

It’s Jake Petricka.
