Here are today’s minor moves from around the league.
- The Braves announced today that they selected the contract of catcher Tony Sanchez. It’s been an eventful few weeks for Sanchez — at the end of August, he headed from the Angels to the Braves in the Brandon Phillips swap, then spent less than two weeks on the Braves’ roster (striking out in his only plate appearance) before being outrighted. The Braves didn’t call on him while Tyler Flowers was out for a week with a bruised hand, but now Flowers is back and available, and Sanchez is as well. It seems unlikely Sanchez will play much with Flowers, Kurt Suzuki and David Freitas all available, and after a season in which Sanchez batted .272/.355/.374 in the minors, he seems like a good bet to come off the Braves’ 40-man when the season ends. Once the fourth overall pick in the draft, the 29-year-old Sanchez has now played for four organizations in the last two seasons.

By the looks of that picture, a catcher that can’t catch.

What a wasted pick by the Pirates, and it was because he agreed to an under-slot deal.

At least it wasn’t over slot

Ignoring you Goat? I knew this was going to happen!

Pirates are a bad team from top to bottom.

Honestly thoigh, if you look at the picks from like 2-16 we’re looking at Mike Leake and relievers and duds.
Its not common to see a team with the 4th pick take someone projected much further down the list.
Overall, it wasn’t a great draft for the Pirates but even if they didnt pick Sanchez, based on the surrounding picks, it doesnt look likely that they would have done much better.

Trout
Phillies2017
Trout was picked at the end of the round. I was referring specifically to picks 2-16. Either way I rescind my past statement as Sanchez was in fact rated considerably lower than 4. My bad, its still early in the morning here.

You are both right, actually.
Eric Longenhagen said that if the Pirates didn’t take Sanchez due to the underslot deal, they would have taken Trout. Ooops.
But, baseball draft picks, even at the top of the draft, are far less certain than in other sports and it’s hard to fault teams for most picks. Unless it’s a Danny Moskos over Matt Wieters situation where the team take the obviously inferior player to save money.
What makes Sanchez over Trout sting isn’t that pick, 23 other teams passed on Trout, too. It’s that they wouldn’t have taken Sanchez if they had drafted Wieters and they likely end up with Trout, too.
Danny Moskos. A college reliever. A guy who didn’t even start in college.
The people who bash Huntingdon and Nutting have short memories of the McClatchy/Littlefield. era.

Thats why you take the best player available in your eyes. If it makes your 2nd and 3rd round pick a little weaker so be it

the big question i have at this point of the season{advanced hot stove},.if they would have drafted trout over sanchez, would they have developed him? or turned him into say a failed relief pitcher.
