Here are today’s minor moves from around the league.
- The White Sox announced yesterday that they’d selected the contract of lefty David Holmberg from Triple-A Charlotte. Holmberg spent three months on the White Sox staff earlier this year, posting a respectable 3.55 ERA, but with 5.0 K/9 and 4.6 BB/9 over 50 2/3 innings, including six starts. The team outrighted him last month. The 26-year-old has now pitched parts of four seasons in the big leagues, also appearing with the Diamondbacks and Reds.
- The White Sox announced today that they’d placed outfielder Leury Garcia on the 10-day DL with a sprained thumb, replacing him with Rymer Liriano, whose contract they selected from Charlotte. Liriano was once a top prospect in the Padres organization, but they designated him for assignment prior to the 2016 season. He found a home with the Brewers, only to have his 2016 campaign derailed when he was hit by a pitch in Spring Training. The White Sox claimed him last winter, then outrighted him near the end of Spring Training. He batted .256/.323/.416 with Charlotte and now appears set for his first big-league action since 2014.
- The Tigers will soon place Victor Martinez on the 60-day DL and select the contract of righty Artie Lewicki, MLB.com’s Jason Beck tweets. Lewicki will start against the Royals on Monday, taking the unenviable task of filling Justin Verlander’s spot in the rotation. The 25-year-old Lewicki was the Tigers’ eighth-round pick out of the University of Virginia in 2014. This year, he’s produced a 3.38 ERA, 7.9 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9 in 141 innings split between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo. The impending Martinez move comes as little surprise, since he requires chronic ablation surgery and is out for the remainder of the season.

And, in a week or two, you’ll be reporting that V-Mart is retiring. So, there’s another role Andrew Romine is going to have to fill.
biasisrelitive
doubt he’d walk away from those $$$

Baseball contracts are guaranteed. Still gets paid if he retires unless he pulls a Gil Meche and gives it back out of the goodness of his heart.
Priggs89
I’m not 100% sure, but I’m pretty positive that isn’t how it works… I don’t think you get paid to retire unless you work out a deal with the team (because they want you to leave just as much as you want to leave).
TheMichigan
Pretty sure if you retire, you forfeit any money left on your contract. If anything the Tigers could release him with an injury settlement or ask him to retire and agree to pay some of his contract.
Marco Scutaro and Prince Fielder were like this, they both chose to stay on their contracts and rehab with team facilities rather than retire and forfeit the money
kroeg49
If you retire, not only do you forfeit the remains years of pay but you also have to return a pro-rated portion of any signing bonus.
tim815
Nope. To get paid, he has to fulfill his contract. Which includes getting in shape to play in spring training.
JKB 2
He does not get paid if he retires. Jesus are you for real?

Just goes to show that the white sox still have a lot of crap in their minors

Some fans, including many in Chicago, just don’t get the human element when lambasting certain players. They have been all over Tim Anderson this year and most are probably unaware of Rymer Liriano’s ordeal when he suffered multiple facial fractures after being hit by a pitch in spring training with the Brewers back in 2016 which resulted in him missing the entire season.
Liriano was a non-roster invitee to White Sox camp this past spring and continued to struggle with his hitting into the first couples of months at AAA Charlotte before regaining his stroke and likely his confidence at the plate as well. Hopefully he will continue his progress this month on the South Side. It’s not like the White Sox couldn’t do with some extra competition at the corner OF spots in 2018. Liriano could also add another chapter to the feel good stories of Avisail Garcia, Nicky Delmonico, Matt Davidson and others this season.

Don’t bother trying to convince this Sox “fan” of anything. He hates everything about the White Sox, and he makes sure everyone knows it whenever they make any sort of move.

Holmberg, my homie burg no Minor. That sum insult!
kroeg49
You have a lot of crap in your head.

Why put a player on the 10 Day DL in September?
fermier
So you can bring a healthy player up from the minors.
