The Mets announced a slew of medical updates on their roster in a press release this morning, with the most notable reveal being that right-hander Zack Wheeler will miss not pitch again this season. The Mets also announced that closer Jeurys Familia will be activated for tomorrow’s game, while righty Tyler Pill has undergone an arthroscopic debridement of his right elbow, which figures to end his season as well. The Mets also confirmed previous reports that Steven Matz has undergone surgery on his left elbow.
Matt Harvey, meanwhile, will make a Class-A rehab start on Saturday, and Noah Syndergaard will throw live batting practice on Friday. Seth Lugo is slated for a bullpen session Friday, and David Wright is continuing baseball activities in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Wheeler’s shutdown comes one month to the day after he was placed on the disabled list with a stress reaction in his right arm. The 27-year-old made his return form a two-year layoff stemming from Tommy John surgery this season, and while he got off to a strong start (3.45 ERA through 11 starts), Wheeler wilted as the summer progressed. In his final six trips to the hill, Wheeler completed six innings just one time and posted a collective 9.89 earned run average. His 2017 season will come to a close with a 5.21 ERA, 8.4 K/9, 4.2 BB/9 and a 47.5 percent ground-ball rate over 86 1/3 frames.
Familia, meanwhile, hasn’t pitched since May 10 due to an arterial clot in his right shoulder that required surgery. Between that and the suspension that he served under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy earlier this year, Familia has been limited to 9 1/3 innings this year, during which time he’s logged a 10-to-8 K/BB ratio.
Pill, 27, made his big league debut with the Mets in 2017 after posting a solid ERA but more questionable secondary numbers in the hitter-friendly environment of Triple-A Las Vegas this season. He made three starts and four relief appearances with the Mets, totaling 22 innings with a 5.32 ERA, 16 strikeouts, 10 walks and a 49.5 percent ground-ball rate.

Wow. Who would have thought that the Giants actually came close to winning that supposed lopsided Carlos Beltran trade.
Beltran in 44 games with the Giants – 1.1 WAR
Wheeler in over 3 years with the Mets – 2.2 WAR
Still a win for the Mets, but not nearly as big as was anticipated in 2011

No one has 20/20 hindsight vision. The Giants at the time were in first place and needed a quality hitter badly. Injuries are always part of the game and if the situation were the same this past 07/31 both teams would still make the trade.

Oh I agree with you 100%, except that everyone has 20/20 hindsight, but I knew what you meant. My comment was directed at those that called the Giants incredibly dumb for making that trade. back then. It was the same tyoe of people that KNEW the Royals were making a mistake trading Wil Myers for James Shields.

LOL. Serves me right for commenting in between working. I do love the armchair quarterbacking. i for one have commented repeatedly on the Red Sox trading Travis Shaw who has developed into a very good player. They thought they were trading high. Problem in my view has been did they really need to weaken their minors in addition to him?

Wheeler has 2 years of team control left to do something for that trade to be a win for the mets. If its 2 years of mediocre injury plagued seasons no one wins that trade.

some people in the media picked the Mets to win the World Series with their elite pitching staff that has vanished……A lot of hype on Harvey, syndergaard, Metz, wheeler, and all their cute nicknames….then pooof! Like a fart in the breeze.

At what point do we think coaches will start teaching pitchers how to pitch again and not throw. It’s great you can throw 100 but no prospects last anymore.
braves25
Hopefully we are about to see it in Atl! They are teaching all those young pitchers to pitch not just throw. Joey Wentz is an example…he was said to have a mid to high 90’s fastball…he usually stays 93-94 with incredible command!
I read an article they were asking him about his power fastball. He said he still had if he needs it but he was learning to pitch not just throw.

It’ll be a steep long uphill climb for the Braves…

Sorry but I was right again. Last year when Wheeler name was brought up many Met fans said he was their future ace still. I warned them that starters coming back from TJS that half of the time they are not even close to being the same pitcher. I was bashed for saying that. Just like James Looney should retire earlier this year. bashed by some saying he was still a great player.

Well done.

“James Looney” is still more productive than Joe Don Looney. But not as good as Looney Tunes.

Trade Cabby! and put Wheeler, Harvey, Matz, and Lugo in the Bullpen. Man they would be stack.

So glad the Gomez for Wheeler+ deal fell through back in 2015 – at the time and in hindsight (so was Wilmer Flores). Wheeler still has age on his side, hope he can right the ship.

Just as I’m reading this I see Conforto has suffered a dislocated shoulder which will probably end his season. The Met’s body count at this point is just mind-numbing.
