Angels righty Matt Shoemaker is now considering a surgical option as he “continues to experience progressive symptoms related to radial nerve compression,” the club announced today.
Obviously, a decision on the course of treatment has yet to be made. And it’s not entirely clear just what procedure — and what sort of outlook and timeline for a return — is under contemplation. Shoemaker had been building back toward the majors after a rest period, but was forced to halt a pen session today, according to Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times (via Twitter).
The 30-year-old righty last appeared for the Halos in the middle of June, and it seems increasingly likely that he may not make it back to the majors this year. He hadn’t exactly been at his best before that, with a 4.52 ERA over 77 2/3 innings on the year, but was at least giving Los Angeles much-needed innings as they deal with a barrage of pitching injuries.
Rather remarkably, the Angels have stayed in the AL Wild Card picture despite questionable work from the rotation, which has produced middle-of-the-pack results that outpace the peripherals. But the promise of late-season returns from Shoemaker and others — Tyler Skaggs, Andrew Heaney, and Garrett Richards — has held out hope of a real push for a postseason berth.
Shoemaker’s new status certainly doesn’t improve the picture, though there’s optimism still regarding the others. Both Skaggs and Heaney are due back soon. As for Richards, he was able to throw twenty pitches off of a mound today, Moura tweets, and says he has no doubt he’ll return this year as well.

Good pitcher, great person. Wishing nothing but the best for Shoe.

Good pitcher, great person! Whooshing the best for Shoe.
HaloShane
It does no matter unfortunately. Get healthy for next year Shoe. Hopefully this wanna be LA team in Orange County, can take notes from the real LA team…..
angelsfan4life
So the team that started in LA. Who has a name with longer ties in LA, than any other LA team. Is the fake LA team? Yeah that makes a lot of sense.
HaloShane
Really this simple. So yes it makes sense. Angels are located in Anaheim in the county of Orange…… NOT LA city nor county. Example your telling us all the Rams should still be called STL, The Lakers should be called Minneapolis Lakers??? I can continue go on and on…. crushing your weak minded opinion of what you call sense. Before you come at someone I suggest you smarten up.
angelsfan4life
So by that logic, the Jets and Giants should be called the New Jersey Jets and Giants. The Red Skins should be called the West Vergina Red Skins. Not the Washington Red Skins. I can tell a little secret that your ego won’t let you believe. As a former cab driver, people when they say that they want to go to Disneyland, don’t say Anaheim. They say they want to go to Disneyland in Los Angeles. People that are not from California or have never lived in California, classified California and only having three major cities Los Angeles San Francisco and San Diego.

I’ve been saying this for years, but a lot of fans from OC think the world perception revolves around their community. I’ve been all around this country and never once have I ever heard anyone outside of California refer specifically to Anaheim or Irvine or Downey. To them it’s all LA. Technically it is the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, ranging from Santa Clarita to San Clemente to Riverside to SanBernardino, all the way across the base of the mountains back to Santa Clarita. Don’t forget the 49ers play in Santa Clara now, and I don’t even think Candlestick was actually in San Francisco. Cowboys play in Arlington. On and on and on.

Hard to believe it is 2017 and someone still needs to litigate the name of the Angels.
First of all, Arte made his money in advertising, and he knows that nobody wants spend lots of money to advertise to Anaheim or Orange County, but they will for Los Angeles. From a business standpoint, it is a no-brainer, and with the fans clamoring for Arte to spend his money on their dream player, it would follow that those same fans would advocate necessary measures to make that possible.
Go to an Angel game and buy tickets in a random location, and the folks around you will certainly be from OC, sure, but also Riverside County, LA County, and SB County. That is known as a demographic market, and all those counties (including Ventura) are what is known as the LA Metro market. The radio waves which carry the games pass over this area, and the cable networks in LA Metro carry FSW for the TV cablecasts. This is a home team in the Los Angeles Metro area, which makes the formal name of Los Angeles Angels highly appropriate.
Finally, this part seems to escape everyone in OC who clutches their pearls and looks frantically for the fainting couch every time they hear “Los Angeles Angels”–Moreno doesn’t market the team as the LA Angels. The road uniforms don’t say “Los Angeles” (as they once read “Anaheim” or [ugh] “California”). The brand he is building is simply called “Angels”, the only logo to adorn both home and road uniforms. Instead of sticking his finger in the eye of those graduates of the Anaheim Home for the Easily Offended, he pulled away from placing any city name on the jersey. “Angels” is all that matters on the field.
Anyone who is still sobbing over the name change, more than a decade later, is in serious need of a high colonic and a ten-mile hike.
LALowLifesWearBlue
So in 2022 we have to call them the Inglewood Rams, right? Last time they were called the LA Rams they played in Anaheim.
LALowLifesWearBlue
How to blow a great regular season in the playoffs? No matter; Dodgers fans can’t afford playoff tickets.
greatdaysport
Two games out of WC with a starting staff of J C Ramirez, Scribner, Nolasco, Bridwell and bullpen game. Welcome back Skaggs. Now the Angels can get rid of that bullpen game!
And Trout out for over a month…..
Way to go Scioscia!

yet at the end of the year some people will still want him fired
Pkindaclub
How many General managers have they gone through with him at the helm
angelsfan4life
Pkindaclub, how are all those other GM’s doing with their new teams? Stoneham retired. Reigns is not a GM any where. And Dipsnot has completely depleted the Mariners farm system. And the team has a higher pay roll, yet is not any better than the Angels. Despite on paper, the Mariners being a completely better team.
jdgoat
The mariners had no farm when he arrived
angelsfan4life
They had a top 10 farm system when he got there. He traded a to 50 prospect and two other prospects for Leonys Martin. Traded one of their top reliever prospects for Joaquin Benoit. Traded how many players to Tampa Bay? For a pitcher that is always injured and another that is nothing more than a long reliever. Actually traded one of their top pitching prospects for Adam Lind.
GeoKaplan
You’re right. Judging from Dipoto’s time with Angels and Mariners, he seems dismissive of talent selected before he arrived. He traded much of what he inherited when he took over in Anaheim.
Because of the fence-swinging signings of Pujols, Hamilton and CJ Wilson, he also compromised his ability to restock the minors.

2017 has been Sosh’s best year as a manager. Better than 2002 which had nowhere the adversity. Tons of credit also to Epps who put together the pitching quilt from mostly remnants.
1988wasalongtimeago
Considering how decimated the pitching staff has been with injury after injury they had some amazing successes. Who knew Maybin had it in him!
When the Dodgers lose in the playoffs, Sosh will be their manager next year.
AngelFan69
We have an odd chance to make the WC game and advance … If we can get at least three arms from our Core A pitching staff before the playoffs .. and Maybin back healthy … we will have a very dynamic team with depth in our bench and bullpen … and who knows … the improbable may happen… lots of credit to Sosh, Nagy, Eppler and the coaching staff ..
angelsfan4life
The only problem is Skaggs is never healthy. Richards might be back. Heaney might be back. They should try to get a starter from the waiver wire trade. It is wide open in the AL. If they can add someone like Verlander. Who knows how far they could go if they can one of the Wild cards.
GeoKaplan
Verlander has pitched better recently than the bad start he had at the season, but $28M/yr for the next two seasons, when he’s 35 and 36? No thanks. Money can be spent better elsewhere.
rez2405 2
Same here. I’m hoping for a definite no on verlander
AngelFan69
We need a tier A arm … we may be able to get one via wire but we have to play out cards right… we need to avoid getting stuck with another Hamilton-like contract…
