The Mariners will select the contract of just-acquired lefty Andrew Albers, per MLB.com’s Greg Johns (via Twitter). He’ll step into the rotation spot that opened when James Paxton hit the DL.
It’s not yet known how the M’s will clear roster space, but corresponding moves will need to be made before the scheduled start tomorrow. Albers is not on the 40-man roster, as he was playing on a minor-league deal when Seattle dealt for him on Friday.
Albers has not yet made an appearance, so his first work in his new organization will come at the major league level. The southpaw has seen the majors in the past, though only for 79 2/3 total innings, most of which came back in 2013.
That said, Albers has been quite good this year for the top Braves affiliate. He  owns 2.61 ERA with 8.6 K/9 and 1.4 BB/9 over his 120 2/3 innings. The soft-tossing control artist also owns a solid 46.1% groundball rate.
Needless to say, it’s hard to land pitching in August, so the M’s will hope their creative solution pays dividends. Albers was not on a 40-man roster and therefore did not need to pass through waivers to be traded.

From Triple A with the Braves to the Mariners’ rotation in place of an ace.

Is that how deep ATL’s farm is or how veil-thin SEA’s rotation is?
bravesfan88
He was a minor league free agent signing, so it was a free gamble for the Braves…He was never a prospect, so the Braves depth really has nothing to do with it…
..Seattle’s starting rotation and their AAA/AA depth already started the season fairly thin, but since almost every single one of their starters has been injured…..this is the end result…
To Albers credit though, he has been pitching excellent lately, and pretty much all year long, even with him rotating between the bullpen and the AAA rotation…
Albers could be a diamond in the rough for Seattle…He’s worked hard to get back to the majors, so I certainly hope he takes this opportunity and runs with it!!

Paxton is hurt? crazy, the guy is such a workhorse.

That’s sarcasm right?

Another Canadian Lefty to Replace Paxton!

Gallardo please. Yes it will open another hole in the rotation but having our backup catcher Ruiz pitch in his place would b an improvement.

Can’t be any worse than Gallardo

Looks like my Halos will continue to stop on the Seattle Mediocres
bravesfan88
It would be pretty funny if Albers shuts down the Angels….Not likely, but still funny…

Congrats, you swept a completely depleted pitching staff. The Halos aren’t a good team either, hate to break it to you.

Better than Seattle which has Dipoto. He’ll kill the farm system and demoralize the team.

M’s left Gallardo out there to twist in the wind tonight; he was throwing 100 pitches no matter what (well, 99 to be exact.) I’d feel bad for him… if he didn’t suck. It was a horrible acquisition at the time, and never showed any signs of being anything other than that, except for his brief stint in the bullpen.
DiPoto should be ashamed of himself, and the ownership should make him aware of that; he had MONTHS to acquire extra starting pitching, and didn’t do it. He can say all he wants that it wasn’t there… it was. Instead, he blows Tyler O’Neill on a guy coming off TJ surgery because he’s controllable. Too bad DiPoto probably won’t be around to control him. He’s bankrupted the farm system and hasn’t received anything near value in return. Based on his stewardship and Servais’s horrific bullpen management, the M’s never stood a chance this year. I had them at 75 wins going into the season; I may have hit it dead on.

You’re preaching to the Angels. We’ve been there with the DiP and you are so right. Viva Billy Eppler !

Do you ever have a clue about what you are talking about when you post? How has he “bankrupted” the minor league system? He traded Gohara last offseason, that was questionable, and he traded O’Neill who is as likely to bust as become a ML player. It is rare that a guy is successful at the ML level with a 30% K rate, which is very much what O’Neill will run.
Otherwise, in the time that DiPoto has been here, what has he traded from the minor leagues that really matters in the longterm? The answer is basically nothing. What he has done though is add current Top 100 or future Top 100 prospects in Kyle Lewis, Sam Carlson, Julio Rodriguez, Juan Queracuto, Evan White, and continued the development of Nick Neidert. Essentially, he has held onto the large majority of the best prospects in the organization. You seem to forget that when he took over we had next to nothing in the minors that seemed to be trending to the ML level.
He added Segura, Haniger, Gamel, Heredia, Miranda, and Vincent to the major league team. He also has added a controllable Gonzalez (whom many like), Shae Simmons (recovering and almost ready to be recalled), and solid role players in Valencia/Dyson.
24TheKid
What has he traded that matters? Gohara, Mallex Smith, Alex Jackson, Tyler O’Neil, Ryan Yarbrough, Zack Littel, Brayan Hernandez, Drew Jackson. Two of those guys are top 100 right now, Hernandez still has room to grow, Littel is quickly moving up the Yankees system, Mallex smith is the same player as Jarod Dyson except cheaper and more control. And what have those players gotten us? The only players on the 25 man roster we got in return from those guys are James Pazos and Gonzalez who should both be in the minors right now. I don’t understand how can just dismiss all of these so quickly.

Interesting thing I saw. Albers would be in line to make his 2nd Mariner start against the braves in Atlanta.
Thegreatandpowerfulsimba
Good we will help the dip and the kid out lol. As a braves fan we are about to blatantly tank as much as we can with our young pitching staff. Getting into the top 5 draft selection will be tough but we have A. Garcia coming back soon and several players due for dl stints.
