The Dodgers have formally announced that they’ve placed righty Yu Darvish on the 10-day DL with lower back tightness. They also officially activated outfielder Curtis Granderson, optioned outfielder Joc Pederson to Triple-A Oklahoma City, and recalled lefty Edward Paredes from Oklahoma City.
Darvish’s injury is not expected to be serious, as GM Farhan Zaidi tells the Orange County Register’s Bill Plunkett (all Twitter links). “He could potentially go out there and he certainly feels he could. But in our situation, it’s important for us to feel that he’s 100 percent. To err on the side of caution with an injury that’s relatively minor still makes sense,” says Zaidi. As Plunkett explains, the Dodgers’ enormous 19-game lead on the NL West (and, really, their huge lead in wins on every team in baseball at this point) gives them the luxury of not taking risks on August games that ultimately won’t matter much.
Darvish left his start on Wednesday due to his back trouble. He’s allowed five runs while striking out 22 and walking four in 18 innings since the Dodgers acquired him at last month’s non-waiver deadline.

Smart move Blue!!!
MiserablePadreFan
This doesn’t break my heart at all. I kinda hope he misses the postseason and signs a free agent contract with the Cincinnati Reds or something. Go Padres!
Michael Chaney
Being a Padres fan must suck when the best you can do is wish badly on other teams
MiserablePadreFan
I only wish badly on the Doyers. Huge difference.
LA Sam
JP wishin Iill on anyone in life shows ur true small ugly self….u must have a terrible lonely life. Get well….
jbaker3170
What league are The Doyers in???
MiserablePadreFan
Na I’ll still have my hatred for the Doyers to keep me warm at night. I’ll be alright, but I really appreciate the kind words.
fox471 Dave
So you “wish poorly?”
liamsfg
He may be a hater but at least his comments are about baseball.
You guys just attack a mans personal life when you should be talking baseball.
My buddy from El Salvador calla them The Doyers, and they will be just fine.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
They’ll choke in the postseason as usual and they’ll have traded Willie Calhoun for nothing.
MiserablePadreFan
The best part of the postseason is to watch the Doyers choke and lose. They can win a 150 games, spend a billion dollars on players, and still end up with the same amount of rings as the Padres.
hmu.seth
Dodgers have 6 rings lol
MiserablePadreFan
Those were from the pre-wildcard era, so they don’t count. Steve Garvey said the same thing in an interview..
hmu.seth
Padres fans hate on dodgers even tho the Giants have won 3 rings in 7 years
MiserablePadreFan
My hate for the Giants is strong as well, but not Doyer strong. I just wish that Clayton Kershaw and Cody Bellinger take up motocross together.
mack22 2
I feel sorry for you.
davidcoonce74
Wait a minute – pre- wild-card world series wins don’t count? According to Steve Garvey? It seems like they should probably count for more, right? No possibility of the fifth-worst team in a league going on a hot streak and winning the whole thing, right? In the pre-division era the best team in each league, no questions asked, participated in the World Series.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
I hate then too but they aren’t playing well this year so I haven’t had much to complain about XD
User 2997803866
For real … what a mess.
imindless
JP please find a dark cave, go in there and please never come out. Padres will never win a chip, too small a market that even people from San Diego don’t go to games. i have friends and family from sd and none care about the padres or chargers. Easily the worst team in the division for the last decade, got rid of boche and he won 3 titles. Goodluck with the hatred in the cellars.
MiserablePadreFan
Bochy was inept in SD. Couldn’t win with a roster stacked with talent. If you can’t win a ring with Mark Bellhorn, Kevin Kouzmanoff, and Deivi Cruz – you gotta go.
takeyourbase
So since it was harder to get into the post season pre-wild card era all titles really don’t count? Well dang, I guess the Yankees haven’t been that good historically after all. Who knew?
jmgara
Who knows how many Yankee championships wouldn’t be because some hot wild card team knocked them off back in the 20s, 30s and 50s. It’s a valid argument, but you can’t really change history at this point.
TX Ranger Fan
you cannot change it at any point!
wiggysf
Everyone in the NL west hates the Dodgers cause they pay to make the postseason.
dodgerfan711
Its not trading Willy Calhoun for nothing. Darvish gives them a better chance at a ring. Whats your team??
hmu.seth
He said that padres have the same ring as padres and I said dodgers have 6 rings
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
If they don’t win a ring this year they did trade Willie Calhoun for nothing
dodgerfan711
I like how you purposely ignored my other question about what team you like. Must be a bad one
imindless
Willie Calhoun sucks lol, can’t play anywhere in the field because he’s fat and slow. Best case a middle of the order dh. Yu darvish has already expressed interest in resigning. Goodluck with the hate.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
I didn’t see it. I’m a Padres fan. Dodgers still have to win a WS this year to make trading Calhoun worth it. Even if they re-sign Darvish it still means they traded Calhoun for nothing because trading for Darvish was not a prerequisite to signing him.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Dodgers could have not made that trade, signed Darvish in the offseason and kept Calhoun.
dodgerfan711
Except signing darvish in the offseason would mean they wouldn’t have him for the playoffs this year… As a padres fan you probably know a thing or 2 about trading players for nothing considering their attempts to compete in 2015. This is the first time freidman gave up a good prospect for a rental.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Exactly. They wanted Darvish in their rotation for the playoffs this year and that’s why they traded Calhoun. If they don’t win it all this year that trade was a waste.
bigalval
This guy is 100% correct
imindless
Calhoun was blocked at every position with better players. He couldnt crack the roster if he tried, we filled a need with a front of the rotation pitcher. Texas would have probably extended darvish and we would have had a player blocked at every position. I’m not high on calhouns translation to the major, but if there was a fit it’s in the al. We didn’t give up verdugo or bueller and still have a top 5 farm. We are just fine.
bigalval
Giving up Calhoun is no big deal he has it in the.minors yes the minors but he has no place to play any scout will tell he is below average anywhere you play him in the field if he can hit in the majors he will have to be a DH
Wolf Hoffmann
Poor JP.. Pathetic man rooting for a pathetic team.
MiserablePadreFan
How rude.
bigkempin
It must suck being a Padres fan when LA comes to down and the “Lets go Dodgers” chant drowns out the “beat LA” chant. Dodger fans refer to Petco as Dodger Stadium South.
MiserablePadreFan
We refer to it as Tijuana north.
Solaris611
Pederson really does need to go down to AAA and focus on his hitting fundamentals – get some plate discipline, learn to go with the pitch, shorten his swing, and stop chasing bad pitches.
skinnykrzyz
So basically just change everything he does in the batters box except for the bombs ?
mack22 2
I wonder why Ward hasn’t helped Peterson swing, like he’s helped everyone else’s
therealryan
Except Pederson has already been doing this. His K% and SwStr% have both gone down for the 3rd straight year. He now sits at 21.0% K% and 9.9% SwStr%, compared to 29.1% and 14.0% as a rookie 2 years ago. His out of zone swing % is down to 25% from 27.5% last year. He is middle of the pack among MLB players in both K% and SwStr% and one of the better players in baseball at not swinging at pitches out of the zone. Unfortunately, in the process of striking out less, he also isn’t walking as much or hitting the ball as hard. Two skills he was good at. At least fans should be happier now, his outs are now of the ground out variety instead of strike three.
brianakabigb
How many of these late season DL stints for the pitchers are a late season breather since the new DL short frame is 10 days? If played right, they an skip a single start, bring up a warm body to play for 10 days, then bring them back like a nice vacation?
empiresam
Exactly. Hopefully the rule is tinkered with in the off season. In the past teams would simply skip the start. Now they get to plug another pitcher on the roster when 12 and 13 men staff is a huge reason why games take so long to finish today. In the 70s, the staff size was 10. Wilber Wood even started both games of a doubleheader. He won AND lost 20 games that year.
davidcoonce74
He was a knuckleballer, though.. Not quite an equivalent to anything today.
davidcoonce74
The 10-day DL was simply the compromise – the players wanted 26-or 27-man rosters and the owners don’t want to commit to that just yet, so the 10-day DL is simply a way to carry, basically, a rotating taxi squad throughout the season. All the better teams have been taking advantage of it pretty well this year, rotating in bullpen and bench pieces and giving starters extra rest. It’s working exactly as it was designed to work.
LA Sam
10-day DL has turned into an amazing weapon, especially w/the change in how player options work, it already kind of is a 30+ player roster w/all the shuffling, why it is so important to be deep at AAA…..massage the roster every single day for best case scenario for a victory that day….then do it all over again. Ur right, now it is a loophole some GM’s are exploiting too perfection.
bigalval
Brian is correct everyone it’s a little break let’s not let it get worse I mean come on everyone the lead is bigger than Ron Jeramy’s will you know lol
Austin0723
Yeah let me just rub my nipples with glee real quick and enjoy this
Ayy-Aron
Striking out 22? Or 2?
HarveyD82
I didn’t see the big attraction of darvish. I thought Verlander would be the better fit…
giantsphan12
A note to JP: hate is what is giving our great nation such trouble today. When it comes to all of our mutual love of America’s Past time, in my opinion, hate has NO place. I am a Giants fan, and although many things about the Dodgers ANNOY me (bottomless well of cash, ability and desire to over pay top players in order to lure them to LA thus keeping small market teams out of the picture, etc.) I certainly don’t hate them. To be honest, even tho it is a little painful to watch their fantastic present success, especially while my favorite team, the Giants struggle immensely, I am very respectful of the great run they’re on and am fascinated to see if they can go all the way this year. I am fascinated because I LOVE baseball and any and all great play, record breaking streaks, excellent pitching etc., is in my opinion what makes being a BB fan so fun. Even if the success I watch is coming from my team’s strongest rival. That said JP, I have nothing negative to say to you (like others on this forum who rudely wish I’ll upon you…..again, poor demonstrations of the human race’s underbelly). I hope only to offer perspective on what is, let none of us forget, A GAME. Can’t we all just LOVE baseball together?!!!
MiserablePadreFan
Easy man, I’m just trolling Doyer Fan and having some fun. I know Yu will be just fine. I’m not buying a tiki torch and hitting the streets anytime soon. I love baseball and I love trolling Doyer Fan. Peace.
dodgerfan711
I hate the Giants. This hate is not politcal. Its a pure rivalry. There is a difference.
jmgara
Well said, giantphan, although I’ll admit that I’ll be a very happy man when the Dodgers choke in the playoffs again. I won’t hate them though if they win it all. I’ll just remind them they’re still one behind us both NL pennants and World Series victories.
LA Sam
Giantsphan12, perfectly said, it is insightful, meaningful post such as yours that ever even made me sign up to post my opinions on this site, I’m a fan, I Love Baseball, been in my blood since the first time I walked outta tunnel n saw how big the stadium was n how green that grass was all those yrs ago, funny, I was pup n it was Dodger stadium. True fandom is the competition, I bleed Dodger blue…. but I have all the respect in the world for ur Giants, l love playful razing of yours vs. mine, FUN, but it’s a gm, n at end of it win or lose, ill say good gm n take it easy to u, or anyone in opposing jersey, it’s sad, lonely losers like JP that we do need to ignore, life is too short for us too ever entertain idiots. Again, enjoyed ur words, now I gotta say I like a Giant fan ! Take it easy…..
MiserablePadreFan
Your mom’s a loser
bigalval
Well said giant fan I like to see teams play with all their stars when you beat them you feel even better I’m not a giant fan at all but what they have done over the years dam you have shown the west who their daddy is. Lol
giants333ddd1
nerd
jleve618
You can hate something but still respect it. There’s a difference.
MiserablePadreFan
Exactly. I hate on the Doyers respectfully.
TX Ranger Fan
As a Texas Rangers fan, I welcome you to the Yu Darvish circus and saga. Great games, then cannot pitch more than 5 innings, DL, several poor games will follow then with a great game…. and the saga continues. Most over- rated pitcher in baseball.
madmanTX
True. Yu is a great guy, but can be fragile and can overpower one game and then give up a bunch of runs the next. Dodger fans were crowing that they won this trade. How’s that working out today?
jdgoat
He had one bad game that skewed his stars in Texas. Besides that he was a top of the rotation pitcher. He gets way to much hate in Dallas for no reason
sufferforsnakes
Maybe Granderson can take his turn in the rotation?
jd396
That didn’t take long.
TX Ranger Fan
Don’t say you haven’t been warned.
BlueSkyLA
Kind of lost in the sauce here is the Dodgers recalling Paredes. Not a big move in itself but it now gives them four LHPs in the pen. So how many lefties is enough?
giantsphan12
LA Sam, I look forward to chilling with you at a future Giants/Dodgers series and enjoying all the beauty of the game together, regardless of which team wins!
