The Braves have received first baseman Kevin Franklin from the Reds, per an announcement from the Cincinnati organization. He represents the player to be named later from the February swap that sent infielder Brandon Phillips to Atlanta.
Franklin, 22, was taken in the second round of the 2013 draft. But he has yet to make much progress through the system. Indeed, he has topped out thus far at the High-A level, with tepid numbers all along the way. This year, Franklin has appeared in only 27 A-ball games, posting an ugly .179/.225/.238 batting line.
The trade remains something of an odd one, due largely to Phillips’s no-trade protection and sizable salary. Atlanta took on only $1MM of his salary in the trade, while sending pitchers Andrew McKirahan and Carlos Portuondo to the Reds. Neither of those hurlers has seen much action this year or shown a particular likelihood of contributing at the MLB level.
I literally yelled “WHAT” after skimming the headline. Thought the Reds reacquired Phillips!
Gotta admit, me too!!
Makes three of us.
Same
Yup…me too
me too
Not me…..
Thought for a minute that Brandon was traded. They dragged the PTBNL until the last minute.
Is this the longest wait time for a PTBNL to be announced? 6 months?
There have been trades in which no PTBNL ever materialized at all.
Player to be born later
Dave Winfield, at the end of his career, was traded from the Twins to the Indians for a PTBNL. This was during the strike off-season, and Winfield decided to just retire. Instead of sending a player to the Twins to complete the trade, the Indians GM at the time took the Twins GM out to a nice dinner. True story!.
Hasnt there also been a trade where the player that was traded also ending up being the PTBNL?
Yeah, it’s happened four times in history. John McDonald from Toronto to Detroit back to Toronto in 2005 is the most recent.
Trea Turner is probably the longest, off the top of my head
Well Turner was a bit of a special case. He was agreed upon the day of the actual trade, he just couldn’t officially be traded until a year after being traded.
Drew Pomeranz was longer than Turner when he was PTBNL in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade between the Rockies and Indians.
It has to be announced within 6 months of the trade date…could be anytime within that time frame
I believe the correct designation in this case is PTBNWL (Plater to be Named WAY Later).
What do they want him for?
Do the Braves even have room for him to play anywhere in their organization? It looks like he’s pretty awful.
Mainly just looks like he’ll be org filler, probably will slot in at 1B for Rome..
That’s my point though. They have so much young talent in their organization that I don’t think there’s anywhere someone with his lack of talent can slot in.
Except that teams need someone to play first base every night, and it’s more beneficial to play him there so that the other players on the roster can focus on their more natural positions instead of being forced to slot in at first out of necessity.
Braves have plenty of terrible players down in the low levels right now, he will slot in on the bench and fill in.
Misleading header
No offense meant, but why was it misleading? The header was very specific and truthful. I think that many people however let their own hopes temporarily deceive their comprehension.
While I do believe that the header was accurate, but I also think that the news was hardly noteworthy considering it will probably amount to nothing but a formality of completing a deal and receiving a non prospect.
