2:04pm: The Astros actually claimed Maybin off revocable waivers, reports Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle (Twitter link). The Angels are simply letting go of the remainder of his $9MM salary — about $1.5MM — which Houston will absorb in the trade. There aren’t any other players changing hands.
1:37pm: The Astros have agreed to acquire outfielder Cameron Maybin from the Angels, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (on Twitter). The trade of Maybin comes in conjunction with the Halos’ reported blockbuster acquisition of Justin Upton from the Tigers.
Maybin will bring extra outfield depth to the Astros, though there’s no readily open everyday spot for him in an outfield currently comprised of Derek Fisher, George Springer and Josh Reddick. But, he’ll bring plenty of speed to the Astros’ roster as rosters are set to expand, giving the team a valuable pinch-running option as well as a potential right-handed complement to either Reddick or Fisher. It’s also worth noting that after a solid start to his big league career, Fisher has fallen into a prolonged slump, so Maybin will give the team another option in the outfield should Fisher continue to look overmatched.
Since coming over from the Tigers over the offseason, the 30-year-old has turned in 387 plate appearances of .235/.333/.351 hitting with six home runs and an AL-leading 29 stolen bases. While the overall batting output has been below the league average, Maybin has posted a boost in his walk rate (to 12.4%), is one of the games best baserunners, and has graded as an average or better fielder in left and center.
So are the Astros gonna clear out a lesser OF in response to what the Angels exactly just did?
Maybin is probably that lesser OF. They’ll just option Fisher
Tomorrow is Sept 1 & rosters expand, my man. Fish won’t be sent down. The Angels are pretty silly to not retain Maybin as a pinch runner.
The angels already have Ben Revere to
pinch run. It would be silly to carry 5 outfielders, especially seeing as how Cam is a free agent this year. Anything we get is cherry on top of the Justin Upton cake.
That’s what Revere and Eric Young Jr. provide (pinch running or OF support)…at a much lower cost.
Might be a little silly on your part to not realize they already have EYJR and revere
Was wondering what they were going to do with Maybin and Revere.
Expletive rocks.
Eppler…god I hate this auto spell crap.
It was funnier the first time.
Agreed, it was much funnier the first time.
whats even funnier is i thought that was the forum replacing a bad word and me spending a minute to figure out what the word was rofl
Same
I understand the financial implications of dealing Maybin to make room for Upton, but trading him to a division rival you’re set to play 7 more games against this year doesn’t seem like the best move
It wasn’t a trade. It was a waiver claim. Angels don’t control who get’s him. They could have pulled him back, but then they would have had to let someone else on the 40 man go.
Who the angels get for him .. maybe Colin Moran or Preston Tucker they are forgot young man in Astros Sistem
Definitely not either of those guys. Probably cash or ptbnl.
Just confirmed. Cash or ptbnl.
No. It’s a waiver claim. Nobody is coming back.
Lol why in the world would you even think the Astros would give up Moran or Tucker for Maybin? Even if they don’t have spots in Houston, they can be used to get a much better player.
Wow! As an Angel fan it’s very exciting! Not to be negative, but up until this year we’ve had no LF for almost 7+years! ✅
I guess Fisher will take a seat for a few days. Hopefully much wasn’t given up.
Moran is hardly moving for Maybin. Forgotten man or not.
It would have to be someone that is not on the 40 man roster or someone that cleared trade waivers and I doubt Tucker and Moran would clear.
What time is today’s deadline?
Midnight
….at the Oasis.
Jake Kaplan just tweeted that Astros won the claim on Maybin, so Astros just assume the contract.
Future Blue Jay Cameron Maybin?
Some terrific moving of the deckchairs. Tigers get rid of large contract that wasn’t doing them any good and get something for it. Angels take only injury risk, because Upton is likely to opt out–and if he doesn’t he’s a good ballplayer. They offload Maybin salary. And Astros get serviceable player for nothing other than a couple of month’s salary, I like it
Astros will go nowhere in the postseason.
I like it too.. if Upton is injury risk and follow your script of opting out .. the angels are out from the contract. and gave up a prospect not even in their top 5 for a playoff push rental. (not in their top 5 in one of the worst farms in the majors to boot)
I feel that Maybin has played better than Revere. Why not release Revere instead?
Maybin was making $9M, Revere $4M?
Yeah, it probably is salary relief, and maybe the two players are ~equivalent relative to Upton. The Angels save, what, $1.5M due to the waiver claim instead of eating both contracts, assuming no one claimed Revere.
Funny. I was thinking the exact opposite. I thought Revere was clearly outplaying Maybin
I would have liked the Angels’ chances a lot more with both Maybin and Upton.
