The Yankees have again designated first baseman Chris Carter for assignment, per a team announcement. He had previously been outrighted after a stint in DFA limbo, with New York bringing him back up to the big leagues just days later.
This time, 26-year-old Ji-Man Choi has been selected to take Carter’s place. The left-handed hitter has spent the bulk of his career at first base, though he does play some corner outfield. He’ll return to the majors for the first time since a 54-game debut last year with the Angels.
It remains to be seen whether Carter will remain in the organization, but he accepted an outright assignment the last time around. New York has had success in the past utilizing this cycle to rotate through veterans when needed, then keeping them stashed without occupying a 40-man spot. (Remember this?)
First base remains unsettled for the Yankees as the deadline draws near. The unit has performed miserably all year and young players Greg Bird and Tyler Austin are presently stranded on the DL. Choi has earned an opportunity with a strong .289/.371/.505 batting line in his 224 plate appearances at Triple-A, but the expectation remains that the organization will be looking hard for a reliable bat over the coming weeks.

I don’t know his numbers for this season but I do know he is good at hitting home runs so what team should/ would pick him up
bronxbombers
He hasn’t even hit he’s this year. Pick him up if you need a strikeout with a man on third and less than 2 outs cause he’s done that all year.
Yoel Rodriguez
Exactly i think the last Sacrifice fly was May 28 against the As i think he only has about 3 all year long. The team will be ok with all his strikeouts but in situation with 0 or 1 out and man on third and you going to swing at a ball in the dirt or not even make contact with the ball. that’s a problem.

We need to trade for a first basement, give bird time to heal 100%, just don’t give anyone big!
astros_fan_84
Matt Adams
MB923
Bird may be out for the year again unfortunately
Drewnasty
Desperate times indeed. Hey Cashman, I got a a guy on a my softball team that can fill in at 1B, if needed. The Yankees need to seriously address 1B ASAP.
fckphil
why not just bring up Andujar to play 3rd and move Headley to 1st.
TheMessenger
My thoughts exactly
tenman85
I’m all for anyone but Carter, but Andujar isn’t ready yet. He was only promoted to AAA earlier this year and his defense still needs a lot of work.
padresfan
Lol
Next
Yankees add him back to the 40 man
thegreatcerealfamine
Yanks should play their low A team against the Padres for laughs.
padresfan
You say that
But the padres swept the Yankees last year for hindsight
I was there when Melvin upton hit that walk off
thegreatcerealfamine
Funny I remember the 1998 WS sweep like it was yesterday!
padresfan
As do I even though it shouldn’t have been a sweep
Missed call on check swing strike 3 for tino Martinez
thegreatcerealfamine
Tip of the cap sir.. you’re legit.
padresfan
I still thank the Yankees would have won that series either way
But, it could have been 4-1 or 4-2
That check swing was as bad as Matt holiday never touching home in my book
Or the missed called out during the 85 World Series with the cardinals and the royals
Cardinals would have won in 85′
Ken M.
Is that the team Judge is playing on?
thegreatcerealfamine
Keep trying you’ll land one sooner or later.
The Jumper
I hate to see anyone lose their job but the man was inept. To be fair, he was never counted on to play the field on a regular basis.
AZPat
He’s under contract. He may lose his job, but he doesn’t lose his paycheck. I should be so fortunate.
acarneglia
Atlanta acquired Adams to play 1st with Freeman out and now they don’t want him out of the lineup with Freddie back. The dude doesn’t need to be great just more capable than Carter
thegreatcerealfamine
You lost me. What does that Adams insert have to do with anything?
darkstar61
“…The dude doesn’t need to be great just more capable than Carter”
He is using Adams as an example of that
Joe Kerr
De Ja Vu all over again.
dazedatnoon
Todd Frazier hit 8 HR with a .367 OBP in June
just saying…..
MB923
He plays 3B. Not 1B.
redsfan48
He plays both, actually. 94 career games at 1B, he’s more than capable of playing it if needed.
Joe Kerr
Could also move Headley to first and Frazier stays at 3rd.
ChicagowhiteBalls
Todd Frazier actually plays 1B as a secondary position. He actually just played 1B the other day. He would be a good pick up for the yankees. Cant imagine he would cost much in return
thegreatcerealfamine
No thanks!
SashaBanksFan
Keep in mind that he couldn’t cut it on the Angels roster. All minor league, can’t translate to majors. Occasional homer, not much else
chri
Lucas Duda?
ExileInLA 2
No question. Until Fowler got hurt, Ibwas hoping that Duda + Reed would bring back Fowler…
ExileInLA 2
*I was
thegreatcerealfamine
Lol! Get real!
metseventually
God damn, I’d love that. Fowler plus another low level prospect would ease like 5% of the pain from this season.
redsfan48
Duda + Reed might return Fowler now that’s Fowler’s injured, but no way the Yanks would give up a healthy Fowler in a trade for those two.
darkstar61
Yes, exactly. Dom Smith is looking fantastic down in Vegas, and there i no point acting like the big club is going to be able to turn this around.
Get it done Mets. Let the future be now
metseventually
Remember, Smith is playing in Las Vegas…
darkstar61
I meant literally looking fantastic – decision making, pitch selection, contact made, etc. Watching him, he looks ready
But as far as the PCL, people really need to stop acting like it is all that extreme. I mean:
.305/.354/.417/.771
.302/.367/.457/.824
.325/.380/.485/.865
That is Smith this year in the PCL and the last two years in Pitchers Leagues. Sure, maybe ~.010 points of BA has been added because of the PCL, and maybe there is about a .015-.020 OPS bump too. But he’s 12th in Avg, 24th in OBP, 28th in OPS as a 22yo in a 26yo League not because of the Leagues Park Factors
jg_916
I’d rather see the Yankees approach Mr Personality Curt Schilling to come out of retirement so as to play first base rather than have Cashman trade for a Met.
willi
Cho is not the answer , But the Yankees are always Lucky !
LA Sam
Where’s Ike Davis when u need em…?
darkstar61
…hitting .183/.231/.338/.569 down in Oklahoma City – still want him?
terry g
Dodgers are trying to convert him into a pitcher.
Ken M.
Next Future Hall of Famer up!
MB923
Hey Eck. Happy 4th.
thegreatcerealfamine
This gal is all over the place!
hdtrip
Tommy Joseph anyone?
jakec77
Phillies would want more than Yanks would be willing to pay- they are only looking at a one year rental.
daves-4
I was thinking the same thing. You never know.. How about Howie Kendrick and Tommy Joseph for some prospects?
MB923
Where would the Yankees play Kendrick?
Nicholas Koch
I’d settle for a defensive player that hits .240-.250 right now carter hitting .195.
I could see 3 scenarios
1.) trade for prado, move headley to first… (doesn’t help headley hot and cold too)
2.) trade for Todd Frazier (plays 1st and 3rd)
3.) trade for wil Myers (make him your 1st base man and he gives you option for OF if needed)
3.)
mikem-5
Vast bulk is redundant.
Jeff Todd
Mostly largely true, yes.
Armaday
I know the Mets and Yankees aren’t known for making trades, but a Lucas Duda and Addison Reed for Jorge Mateo makes so much sense for both teams!
LA Sam
Mateo is overrated crybaby turd, gonna take more than that to get quality players in return, plus league knows ur gettin desperate, somebody gonna do too yanks what they did to Cubbies 4 Aroldis last yr, prime cost..
jg_916
The difference being: Cashman isn’t desperate to end that pitiful 108 year drought, like Theo “The Boy Genius” was. Cash knows this was destined to be a rebuilding year for Yanks, anyway. If he can add someone at a reasonable price, great. Otherwise, Austin will be back at some point and Cashman can go after Hosmer or another first baseman in the offseason, when more moves to clear dead weight–Ellsbury, maybe Headley–are coming.
Think of THIS year as being very similar to the ’95 team which made the playoffs but AFTERWARDS, Tino, Jeff Nelson, Joe Torre, Girardi and others were added while Tony Fernandez, Mike Stanley and Showalter were shown the door and Donnie Baseball retired.
NEXT YEAR is when the Yankees really challenge. Hal and Cash know this.
thegreatcerealfamine
Love what you said about the Cubs! Problem they can’t part with Jacoby because,1 he’s too expensive and 2 he’s not that bad(take a look around the league)
kiwimlbfan
Thank you JG, my thoughts exactly. Unless they think they’ll win it all, they’re not wasting trade chips. Those will be spent on a pitcher after the season but it won’t be an overpay because there are so many pitching FAs out there this year.
Plus, they are going under the luxury tax threshold so they’re not going for anyone who has much money or length of contract left…
thegreatcerealfamine
Lol..weak sauce!!!
Wkovalchuck
Why don’t the Yankees just let things play out? Don’t trade you minor leaguers for rentals or players that they will not want next year (headley trade) This problem can be fixed internally I believe. This season was supposed to be a lost season anyway so let’s let the young guys get some mlb experience. Platoon headley and holiday at 1st, bring up andujar, and use one of the outfielders at DH for the games holiday is at first and rotate the outfielders. I want to see Frazier get some more at bats at the top level so I’d keep him up somehow.
To me the biggest issue right now is the Yankees bullpen. If the Yankees are going to finish the year in a playoff spot they need to get a couple more quality relievers. Clippard, Betances, and Chapman all seem to be struggling mightily. If you want to get back on track these guys need to get back on track. If you can add 2 quality arms I think this would take some of the burden off these 3.
kiwimlbfan
Good post, spot on. Saving for Machardo.
Relievers got burned in the first couple of months having to pick up so many innings.
hodor 3
Very sensible approach. I like you.

It’s about damn time! Carter has been an absolute hole at 1st, both offensively and defensively. The Yankees rank last offensively at 1B in all of MLB, and Carter has played a major role in all of that. Choi might not be the answer, but give him a shot and see what he does. I highly doubt he’s gonna be worse than Carter, both offensively and defensively.
Macho King OG
Carter should never have been brought up for the second time, and if he accepts the assignment, let him rot in Scranton.
