The White Sox have acquired veteran relievers Mark Lowe and Jean Machi from the Mariners, according to Triple-A Tacoma broadcaster Mike Curto (Twitter link). Both will report to Chicago’s top affiliate.
It seems that this isn’t a part of a larger deal, as Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times tweets that cash is heading back to the M’s. Clearly, the addition of these two players by the rebuilding South Siders is designed to help the team maintain its pen depth down the stretch. Chicago has already traded away a pair of relievers from its major league roster and could move yet more by the trade deadline.
Lowe, 35, was released by the Tigers late in camp after a disappointing run in Detroit. He joined the Mariners on a minors pact and has gone on to post a 6.23 ERA in 39 innings, all at Triple-A. Lowe has struck out 8.5 and walked 4.6 batters per nine on the year.
As for the 35-year-old Machi, he did enjoy a brief MLB stint earlier this season — his first since 2015 — but has spent most of the year at Tacoma. Over 36 2/3 innings, Machi carries a 3.44 ERA with 7.1 K/9 against 2.0 BB/9.
Who? Haven’t heard of them in years
They’re the brothers of Rob Lowe and Ralph Macchio
And cousin of Derek Lowe and brother in law of Kameron Loe
Flo Rida and T-Pain came up with a song about them.
That’s his cousin F Lowe Rida
It’s called Low Loe Lowe
What about David Lough?
Heard of Lowe the other day when he was part of the Uber 4 going from Phoenix to (Al)Albuquerque!!!
Not a bad move- assuming Swarzak and maybe Clippard are flipped gives them some depth.
Trust me, theonly depth Lowe will provide is in the standings.
You make that sound like a bad thing.
Two 35 year old relief pitchers bring you back what?
Maybe an MLB the show 07 legendary edition autographed by Ken Griffey Jr?
No, that’s too much to give up for them
70 years of life experience brother!
One of the best comments ive seen on here
I agree
Agreed
Honestly, this is not even funny at all one bit. Maybe before making fun of pro athletes you should check what you have done in your life.
Well someone feels a little too sensitive…
And I thought that was pretty funny.
BOOOOO Just Another Fan
A cash deal. Okay. Amazing what $1.29 buys these days.
cash
A bag of balls and a foot long Chicago style hot dog.
A couple hot dogs and a bag of chips–final offer.
Just bodies that’s all.
A case of Coors Light & some granny panties! Yikes!
CWS don’t want to waste valuable control over minor league players so this will get the thru Sept 1 call ups. Smart move.
I get that but you’d think there’s someone in AAA who could use some experience.
Haha this should help them get a better draft pick.
Championship!!!
As the article sais… sox probably plan on trading Swarzak and are not ready to call up prospects. This helps them lose more games. Which is part of rebuilding. They probably want to cement that top 3 draft pick in 2018
Actually, sorting thru minor leaguers looking for someone who just never got the chance, is part of rebuilding. Acquiring aging has beens, who aren’t even playing well in the minors, is just part of sucking.
Jerry Reinsdorf owns a lot of stock in Uber.
Reinsdorf doesn’t know what’s going on. He’s crrapping in a diaper in a home somewhere with Williams and Paxon changing his diaper
Couldn’t get Dipoto to throw in Kyle Lewis? Disappointing.
right
Mark Lowe’s 2015 season still confounds me. That first half with the Mariners was illogically dominant. Baseball’s an odd duck.
It wasn’t even all that fluky. His advanced stats backed it up
This is one of funniest thread of comments I’ve read on this site!
Lots of folk seem to think O’Neill is the second coming. We’ll see. DiPoto has done well in Seattle.
O’Neill is the next Matt Holliday while Gonzales is the next Horacio Ramirez.
This is pretty smart by the White Sox front office. Relievers are now receiving serious contracts and prospect acquisition in trades so in the middle of a clear, full blown rebuild they trade away all their useful pen arms and just spend relatively minor cash to replace the good arms with terrible pitchers to help squander any leads they have after 5 innings and raise your draft position for next year. I love modern age baseball…
So you must be a White Sox season ticket holder, since you find them so entertaining.
Hahah whitesox put Clippard in against the Royals in the bottom of the 9th and he blew the game. Its working out as planned
Filler moves, would be surprised to see Lowe get out of AAA. Minor league reliever prospects should be up here instead. Get them the experience and see what you need to do for next season in terms of scouting for minor league FAs, and for the draft. Every team has plenty of guys that could stick in a bullpen, even future starters, for experience.
Good move. Why start the service time on their prospects when they can throw out has-beens who will also help them lose? I’m still hoping the Sox suck enough to get to the #2 pick.
