The fractured right hand shortstop Nick Ahmed suffered this week could force the Diamondbacks to address the position prior to the trade deadline, writes Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. With Ahmed out for the foreseeable future, general manager Mike Hazen indicated that he’s open to acquiring a shortstop. “I felt like we had a clearer path,” Hazen said. “I do think, as you take on injuries, those things do change a little bit. I think over the next month, we have to be somewhat flexible given what may happen with the major-league team. I do think we have areas, like I’ve said before, that we’re going to at least focus in on to see if there are ways to improve the club.” Piecoro names the Reds’ Zack Cozart, the Tigers’ Jose Iglesias and the Phillies’ Freddy Galvis as potential targets, suggesting that each are likely defensive upgrades over the Diamondbacks’ in-house tandem of Chris Owings and Ketel Marte.
More from the majors’ two West divisions:
- When Angels left-hander Andrew Heaney underwent Tommy John surgery a year ago, general manager Billy Eppler was unwilling to rule him out for all of 2017. Now, there’s a good chance Heaney will indeed take the hill this season, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times. Heaney threw a 90-pitch simulated game Saturday and could embark on a rehab assignment later this month, and manager Mike Scioscia believes the 28-year-old has made “remarkable” progress. “I would say that his rehab has gone as well as you could hope for,” Scioscia said. “For him to throw the ball the way he did this afternoon, on the one-year anniversary of his surgery, is incredible. It’s very promising where he is.”
- Mike Trout’s return from the disabled list later this month could create a dilemma for the Angels, who might have to decide between fellow outfielders Ben Revere and Eric Young Jr., writes DiGiovanna. Revere is the far pricier player, raking in $4MM to Young’s minimal salary; however, Young has slashed .275/.353/.418 with three home runs and 11 steals in 104 plate appearances to trump Revere’s output (.223/.237/.311, one homer, five steals over 152 PAs).
- Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez won’t return until after the All-Star break, per Ken Gurnick of MLB.com and Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times (Twitter links). The back troubles Gonzalez has dealt with for years continue to pose a problem, and he still hasn’t resumed baseball activities since going on the DL in the first half of June. “He’s not where he wants to be,” noted manager Dave Roberts.

The Angles need a 1st basemen. Why not platoon Trout and Puljos at DH and 1st
Megadro2000
Because trout is an amazing defender in CF

LOL I’m just going to skip that suggestion and just mention that another article earlier this week had the Angels as a possible landing spot for Brandon Belt. Speculation though. But an interesting idea.
angelsfan4life
Me personally I would put Calhoun at first base. He has played first base in the minors and spring training. That way the can save tradable players to address second and starting pitching.
jayceincase
Calhoun is a menace to society when his glove hits the field. His best years could resemble Dan Uggla. His worst years will resemble Dan Ugly. His value will never be higher. Deal him.
SoCalAngelsFan75
Do the Halos have the pieces for Alonso and would a) the Angels be willing to give up those few assets and b) would the A’s be willing to trade within the division?
angels fan 3
Not sure how you made this comparison
ryanw-2
That makes absolutely no sense.

I’ve been thinking the same thing for a couple of years. It makes a lot of sense. They did that with Erstad. Probably saved his career being such a daredevil in the OF. They could platoon EY and Revere in RF. Of course this involves doing something about Cron, Marte, and possibly Valbuena. Lots of options.

He has to be joking right??….Right!?! ….I hope for the safety of those that live around or near him he’s joking…
If not, someone has some serious issues with their sanity….or lack thereof..

Yeah I read that! Interesting!

Sounds like AGon is cycling up for the 2nd 1/2

When the dust settles and every shelved player returns to their active roster spots… the Angela
are going to have “a good problem” on their hands.. they will be stocked with a surplus of decent players that are performing decently … Also, we have stocked our minors with arms … Any comments?

I don’t follow the Angels closely and I’m not trying to stir the pot, but I feel like I’m missing something. Coming into the season, I thought the Angels were an 80-82 win team and think they’ve done a nice job staying afloat with some of their major injuries this year. However, they still feel like the same type of team I thought they were before the season. I like their OF and SS, but still think their weak throughout the rest of the infield. DH is also a big hole with how much Pujols has struggled with age. If Richards and Skaggs are healthy, they’re promising but the rest of their rotation look like back end guys. I also don’t really see where the minors are stacked with arms. Like I said, I’m not trying to bad mouth them. Please educate me and let me know where I’m wrong because I’d like to see them do better and not waste Trout’s superb talent.
bravesfan88
We would all like to see the Angels succeed, solely for Trout’s sake, but unfortunately, they always seem to be a floundering cesspool of mediocrity…
I’m genuinely not trying to stir the pot either, that is just a well-known fact…
And while their farm system has improved, honestly it had nowhere to go but up, I don’t see where they are “stacked with [talented] arms.”
The Braves farm system is stacked with talented arms, the Angels….ehhh…not so much…

The guy you were responding too made this exact point but you completely missed it.

I’m in the same camp concerning the Angels. Before the season, they did a good job just cobbling a team together. They are performing much better than anyone expected, especially with Mike Trout injured and core players such as Kole Calhoun, Albert Pujols, Rickey Nolasco and Matt Shoemaker all under performing, I was under the impression that they had NO one special in their minor league system.
rpoabr
This year Angels are playing over their head and probably not a good chance if it getting much better. However, next year it could look solid.
SPs are looking solid and cheap if all healthy:
Richards
Heaney
Shoemaker
Skaggs
Random 5th SP, you pick
Bullpen has been great and also pretty cheap options.
That would leave some cash to plug a couple of holes at 3B, 2B, and maybe OF/1B.
halos101
the key is keeping the starters healthy. we’d be a real nice team with a healthy staff
angels fan 3
You forgot nick tropeano
ryanw-2
They’re actually underperforming based on really slow starts by Maybin and Calhoun, and terrible seasons so far from Valbuena and Espinosa. That’s four players who if they were having normal seasons would have the Angels in a WC spot at least despite the losses to their starting rotation.
ndiamond2017
I think Ben Revere has hit the point where he’s going to be bouncing around on minor league contracts for the remainder of his career.
bravesfan88
That’s correct Mr. Neil…I believe he’s been there already, Angels were just hoping for a turnaround, that hasn’t came yet and won’t come probably ever…
EY Jr. though, good lord he’s been a little stud for the Angels…I’m glad they gave him a legitimate shot, and he’s made the most of that opportunity…Good for the Angels and good for EY Jr.
mannyl101
Don’t get me started! Angels r one of my fav teams! I really think Arte is the problem! He wants to be s great owner, but he’s more like Steinbrenner in the 1980’s!

Heaney is only 26, not 28.

DBacks should wait and see how Ketel Marte and Ildemaro Vargas handle the majors before they give up any prospects from their already depleted farm system for a shortstop. Ahmed will be back in 2 months or so. Owings is decent at short stop and is swinging a great bat this year. If they make a trade, it should be to upgrade the bullpen.

Heaney is 36, not 28:)

Dbacks would be fine with a veteran bench middle infielder. Dbacks don’t need an everyday SS. I know Ahmed is a defensive wizard, but our defense would suffer even worse with having Owings or Drury in the outfield every game. Pollock and Tomas are injury liabilities (Tomas a liability in general). an outfielder may be the best bet. Perlata has been great, but can’t count on Blanco and Fuentes, though they are great defensively, and Herman has been alright. But an everyday SS would hurt us even more. Need an outfielder possibly.
