The Dodgers announced on Friday that they’ve acquired right-hander Luke Farrell from the Royals in exchange for cash. Farrell was designated for assignment earlier this week when Kansas City acquired the trio of Trevor Cahill, Brandon Maurer and Ryan Buchter from the Padres. The Dodgers moved lefty Adam Liberatore to the 60-day disabled list to create space on the 40-man roster.
Farrell, 26, made his MLB debut with K.C. this season but was shelled for five runs on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. Unsightly as that spot start was, Farrell has produced some solid results with Triple-A Omaha in each of the past two seasons, working to a combined 3.92 ERA with 8.2 K/9, 3.5 BB/9 and roughly a 36 percent ground-ball rate. He comes from a good baseball family as well, given that his father, John, currently manages the Red Sox.
Farrell has never ranked among the Royals’ top echelon of prospects, though Fangraphs prospect analyst Eric Longenhagen did mention him when profiling the Royals’ farm system this offseason. Per Longenhagen, Farrell works 90-92 mph with his fastball and has an average cutter and fringe curveball.

I enjoyed this post

So did you

This acquisition makes sense. The Dodgers AAA team must have faced him enough to know him well enough. Maybe Honeycutt can work with him.

Was hoping to see like dodgers acquire sonny gray or Darvish and I’m like naw they got this fool
Surprisingly a Bucks Fan
um yeah cuz they aren’t still trying to get either of them…..

This is their big move!!!???
BlueSkyLA
He’s a righty pitcher so it must be.
frankjc81
I laughed when I read your post until I realized you are being serious. ♂️ Yea bud this is the Dodgers big move smh. Come on man
Francys01
Probably this is the pitcher that the Dodgers needed, with that being said you can keep your prospects LA . But, remember the Rangers are open to make business.
Thronson5
I thought at first we actually made a trade lol
libbylogan510
I can’t see this as anything other than wasting money. If they do trade for anyone else, they will need to create another roster spot, and Farrell will be the likely candidate for release (or else they’ll have to stash him on the DL). If you look back over the last 3 to 4 years, you will see that the FO has made so many similar moves; throwing around money for mediocre talent and then releasing them within a month or two. No single move costs very much; however, the cumulative dollars wasted could have been used to get some real talent.
Michael Chaney
Do you really think the Dodgers care about spending a few thousand bucks to see if a guy can play?
frankjc81
Real talent like who? These moves are gambles that teams take. Not just the Dodgers. It’s part of the business in running a team. Some pan out some don’t.
abcrazy4dodgers
Man you are so right. So many prorated MLB minimum salaries for a week or three, and then you get a Gazillion Dollars worth of Brandon Morrow. Yep, LAD FO is totally inept. Just look at their record…..
frankiegxiii
He has a nice downward plane on his fastball. Got him for cash(not Ralston Cash), although it was a tease, this was still a nice little move

Andrew Friedman’s favorite game at the midseason trade deadline and during the offseason is to leak information to the press about the Dodgers’ interest in various big name stars. Since he has never signed a single star other than retaining Jansen and Turner, one has to wonder what is going on. I would speculate that Friedman’s only motive is to increase the price (either money or top prospects) that other teams have to ultimately pay for these players. He even played this same game with the Dodgers’ own players (Greinke, Jansen, and Turner). He forced the D-Backs into a significant overpay for Greinke. He was willing to give up both Turner and Jansen, who only ended up signing with the Dodgers for less money than they could have made elsewhere. Recall that both the Nationals and Marlins were willing pay Jansen more than Friedman’s best offer. With that said, I do agree with the Dodgers regarding their refusal to trade their top prospects.
jleve618
I think they win at least 1 ws in the last few years if they traded for hamels though.
abcrazy4dodgers
Jim Bowden… Is that you?
frankjc81
The FO won’t over pay. And look at the team they have built. To have a team like this as well as one of the best farms in MLB, that is impressive. They didn’t land big names in the last because teams wanted Bellinger, Seager and Urias. Verdugo isn’t an untouchable. None of these current prospects are really. That is why a trade will get done for gray or darvish. Assuming the rangers asking price goes down a bit. Stupid to trade the top 2 prospects for a rental.
gmflores27
Dodgers are smart yet you got the typical crowd who thinks the team should make a big trade for an inconsistent starter such as Sonny Gray instead of being rational. The same thing happens with STL fans who have a top 5 GM in Mozeliak and give him shade for not mortgaging the future. Sometimes fans are so unrealistic man.
Thronson5
I would pay the price for Darvish. We don’t have a solid righty and the guys pretty good but I wouldn’t give up a lot of for Gray or Verlander. I wouldn’t mind Verlander because of his success in the Post season but I wouldn’t give up a lot for him.
frankjc81
You would give up the 2 best prospects for a rental that has a 4 era? I know it’s darvish but he hasn’t been his usual dominant self this season. I would still love to have darvish, just not at that price. Gray to me I would do in a second since he is young and controllable for the next two seasons as well. Plus he has been looking like his 2015 self lately. Verlander makes no sense unless if Detroit is willing to eat most of that contract
frankjc81
Sonny gray has been solid lately. He has very good numbers against the NL. He’s young and he’s controllable for the next two seasons. Who knows how great this kid can be under Honey. Besides that it’s not just the typical crowd. Many MLB experts are saying the Dodgers should make a trade for Gray or Darvish. Dodgers FO have built an incredible team and one of the top farms. That is tough to do. By building this sort of strong farm, they can add pieces to an help the team win a World Series. Verdugo and Buehler could be traded and our farm would still be stacked. Although I think that is a stupid trade for a rental in Darvish I’m just saying it wouldn’t hurt the farm significantly and it bolsters our starting rotation big time for the playoffs. I would however make a similar trade for gray for the reasons i stated above
BlueSkyLA
The cost for Gray would be and should be significantly higher than for Darvish, for the reasons you stated.
mcstiffy
Theres the big trade , nice going zaweenni. We need ned colletti back
frankjc81
I hope you are kidding. I don’t like thinking that people can really be this dumb
BlueSkyLA
The Dodgers also called up Kyle Farmer (C/IF) today, somebody we’ve heard almost nothing about, to fill a hole on the short bench. Interesting choice over Verdugo or Calhoun or Rios.
frankjc81
He’s been killing it in double and triple A, he’s 26 and he’s a catcher that can play corner infield. You don’t see the difference there? They aren’t just going to bring up a young still developing top prospect because there is an opening. Usually September is the time for that. CB came up because he was clearly ready.
BlueSkyLA
I get that, he’s just kind of off the radar, and primarily a catcher besides. And auditions for top prospects are hardly unusual before the September expansion. It’s probably a short term promotion in either case,
frankjc81
It’s not unusual when they are MLB ready. Something that verdugo and Calhoun are not. Besides that the Dodgers needed to fill a bench spot so having a versatile player like farmer makes sense. And look what he just did tonight. At the end of the day, it wasn’t an interesting choice. It was the smart one considering the other players listed aren’t MLB ready yet and potential trade pieces. If they were MLB ready and get brought up and bomb, value goes down obviously.
