The Rangers are putting out feelers with other organizations to gauge interest in star righty Yu Darvish, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. While Texas isn’t yet ready to pursue a trade, per the report, it seems the club’s recent skid has put that option firmly on the table.
While there’s still plenty of uncertainty, the news is still notable. Darvish, after all, would represent the only clear impact rental starter on the market. Other top potentially available arms on expiring contracts include Trevor Cahill, Marco Estrada, Jhoulys Chacin, Jeremy Hellickson, and Jaime Garcia (who may be en route to the Twins).
If the 30-year-old is indeed made available, the Rangers would surely command a rather steep price. He wouldn’t be eligible for a qualifying offer from an acquiring team, so there’s no real value beyond the present season (apart from laying some groundwork for a possible free-agent pursuit), but Darvish could significantly impact an organization’s run to and through the postseason.
Over his 125 1/3 innings this year, Darvish has delivered a 3.45 ERA with 9.4 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9. That’s not the kind of elite performance he delivered prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery, but still represents top-level performance — particularly in the current run-scoring environment.
Darvish is throwing as hard as ever and generating swinging-strikes at near-typical levels. Any long-term health concerns are out the window. And with just $11MM owed to him over the course of the season, he’s quite affordable for his performance level.
Presumably, just about any organization currently seeking rotation help would need to consider the Japanese ace. Some clubs will still prefer controllable hurlers, most notably Sonny Gray, but the market is otherwise starved for top-end starters that would be expected to represent significant upgrades for a hypothetical postseason rotation.
If the rangers can’t get top top prospects for this guy it’s truly the death of the rental
I think he will net the Rangers top prospects, starters are a priority for a lot of the contenders. The A’s got Cotton, Montas and Holmes for Hill and Reddick, who then where rentals. The rental position players this year are the ones that don’t bring a lot of interest, but that is just how it turned out to be this year.
QO compensation has changed though, so that will have an effect on trades moving forward.
True QO has changed the game GM can’t still be greedy Cashman
times are changing. historically, ace rental deadline trades do nothing. can anyone think of a single time it mattered?
Sabathia
Cueto
Alexander
Sutcliffe
Randy Johnson
Schilling
Cliff Lee
Oswalt
The best one ever.
He didn’t really make an impact. His team got taken down by the padres in 98
Johnson I’m referring too
U guys w/ur facts! Sure….w/facts u can make anything look good….
Without Johnson Houston doesn’t even make it to the postseason. He was unbelievable after the trade deadline.
The original question was something like “when did these trades for an ace ever matter” and it’s happened a ton
I remember how good he was
They won over 100 games that year
Booth
True; I’d forgotten how good they were. The Braves finished even better. As a Padres fan, I loved the ’98 postseason but that was a painful World Series to watch. I doubt Atlanta or Houston would have won either but they’d have had a better chance.
But getting upset in the first round doesn’t diminish that Johnson was an absolutely great trade deadline acquisition, considering how little Houston gave up for him.
Price
Fister to Det ’11….8-1, 1.79 era down the stretch
Wow…you obviously know nothing. Look at all the answers and you say they do nothing. SMH
Doyle Alexander 1987
Arguably the best ever…
the 98 Padres.. team full of juicers
I remember Doyle trade, he performed…..cost em young righty…..John Smoltz….HOFr…..hence the other side of paying for the rental, buyer beware……
Brandon McCarthy
He signed with the Cubs after the trade
Rick Sutcliffe, 1984.
And soon to be Jose Quintana, 2017.
Wasnt aware Quintana was a rental..
What MLB team wasn’t back then? Not every guy but all teams had a few.
When CC Sabathia got traded to the Brewers by the Cleveland Indians in 2008. Took em to the playoffs, Sabathia was 17–10 overall (11–2 with Milwaukee) with a 2.70 ERA and was second in the majors (behind Tim Lincecum) with 251 strikeouts.
Though he was unable to take them to the promised land, he became a FA at the end of the season signing that contract with the Yankees (and subsequent extension) and been with them ever since. (2017 is the last year of Sabathia’s contract)
From what’s occurred in MLB historically up through last season’s non-waiver trade deadline, what would prompt you to post such a comment?
MLB changed QO compensation last offseason.
How does that significantly effect Yu Darvish’s market? An acquiring club would still lose any chance at offering him a QO, just like the under the previous CBA which did little to hurt an impacting rental player or pitcher.
The biggest effect with the new changes would be to the selling team like the Rangers who won’t get nearly the compensatory return should they opt to hang on to an impending FA such as Darvish.
The draft pick the Rangers would have gotten under the old system raises his price for the acquiring team because if the Rangers don’t get a package significantly better than a late first round draft pick, they could hold onto him and get the draft pick. Now, the draft pick isn’t as valuable so the Rangers lose leverage.
OP’s comment is an interesting one. If Darvish doesn’t net top prospects in return, the change to the QO compensation will give the the Rangers (in this case) little to no incentive to trade him, thus the death of the rental. They’d be better off keeping him so he’s more likely to sign a new deal before next year (if that’s their plan), and giving them a greater chance of catching lightning in a bottle in the last couple months of the season and sneak into a WC spot. I guess we’ll find out shortly.
rbisingle: Agree with your follow up reply, especially in the specific case regarding Darvish and the Rangers.
Teheran for darvish
Get help. Quickly
Teheran and Maitan!
Trade him, Hamels, Lucroy, Gomez, Napoli, and Cashner. Maybe even see if anyone is interested in the obp machine Choo if Texas is willing to eat a large chunk of the deal. Doubt Choo would even draw interest but never hurts to try. It wouldn’t fully reload the farm after the Hamels and Lucroy deals but it would at least get us a few legit prospects
Napoli to the Yankees makes sense to me
Is Nap a free agent after this year?
Yes
Please explain why!
Yankees need first base help
They’ve got a platoon that will outperform Napoli and his strikeouts/terrible defense.
Napoli leads the majors in HR’s in July. How’s the platoon?
TIED for the lead. And what else has he done? Nothing.
And Choo to the Royals might make sense, given Texas eats some of the contract as you said
For all those guys, it’d have to be for a lot of “legit prospects”
But none of those guys really has a lot of value other than Darvish (a rental) and Hamels (big contract). Lucroy is a rental (and a struggling one at that), Gomez is also a rental (and if JD Martinez got a light return, Gomez would get much less), and Napoli and Cashner are rentals too but they just aren’t that good. If they traded every single one of those guys, they might get a top prospect apiece for Hamels and Darvish and a few lottery tickets or insignificant minor leaguers.
Stove became a bit warmer now boys
I though the “stove” was only hot in the winter or the offseason?
Perhaps we can adopt the term hot “grill” for the summer trade deadline(s). lol
Come to think of it, gathering ’round an ice cold kegger sounds even better in June, July and August!
Although I’d spend more time at the keg, I think you nailed it with with the “Hot Grille Season” Aaron
Yankees need to stay far away from Darvish not giving up top prospects for a rental, would rather have Gray who isn’t a free agent until after the 2019 season this makes no sense for the Yanks.
Yanks and Oakland are apparently close to a deal to send Gray to the Yanks package will most likely include Mateo, Acevedo, and others Clint Frazier and Torres are NOT in this deal.
Come hither, Darvish.
I wouldn’t mind Lucroy back in a Brewer uniform
Sure, give us the exact same pieces back!!
We’ll give you lucroy for Lewis brinson
Dodgers….n the rich get richer!
Kershaw, Yu, Hill, Wood…..play-off rotation.
=another early exit!
Playoff rotation of Kershaw
After injuries
Sale, Price, Porcello, Pomeranz/ERod …
I wouldn’t mind Hamels, even though he blew it today.
“rival” cubs lol since when
Rival Cubs? Headline says “Rival Clubs”.
Since they were willing to trade him to the Houston Astros….
Dodgers, Yankees, Astros and Boston all make sense, and have the prospect capital to get something done. I would expect an MLB ready catcher to be part of any deal.
Darvish could be the key piece for those teams in the playoffs.
I think they’re pretty set on using Chirinos and giving Brett Nicholas a chance if Lucroy goes, so don’t think the catcher would be the most important piece. Rangers need better pitching
Spot on with both (C/SP/RP).
The Dodgers are not willing to give up Verdugo and that is who everyone asks for in return. Barnes is the backup catcher who is ready to be a starter but is blocked by Grandal. You bring up a interesting point. If any of you saw last nights game a starter is a must in LA rotation. McCarthy is horrible.
He probably wont be traded.
Trade the whole damn team! Fed up with this crap
Ahhhh Poor baby!
About time!! I am one of the biggest Rangers fan you’ll meet and I think they need to trade everyone who has any type of value that is over that age of 30. Time to rebuild, get young. Our GM is amazing and can so a great job rebuilding. Under performance and inconsistency is killing the Rangers.
Are the Rangers about to go the way of the Pades and Phillies?
Unless the answer is yes, there is NO way they should trade Darvish.
If it’s true that Ohtani worships Darvish AND that he must sign for the same basic dollar value with any club, the Rangers would have as good a chance as anyone to sign him.
That alone is worth more than what they might get back for a rental.
thats why i hope darvish gets traded; phils have plenty of dollars to sign him and dont give up any draft compensation, and better position to lure otani at some point.
Everybody drools thinking this means Rangers are having a fire sale. Unless the ownership told JD to cut payroll, this isn’t happening. A few guys might go who they couldn’t keep anyway or would bring an overpayment in return, but no way are the Rangers needing a full rebuild just because they are having a down year.
They’re going to lose them anyways so it’d be stupid to keep them since they’re a mediocre team
i remember berry when darvish was a young buck with everything to show and nothing to prove. i wonderella if he can get back to his roots and impress the suits
Beltre and Cashner to Royals for O’Hean,Skugland,Starling and so on?
Ross to Cubs?
Hamels/Lucroy to Red Sox?
Darvish/Bullpener to Dodgers?
Mike Napoli to Yankees?
Choo to Indians?
Did something happen to Moose? I don’t see the Royals trading for a third baseman.
Ross to Cubs?? 7.22 e.r.a. We have Lester Hendricks Quintana Arietta .
The Rangers aren’t trading Adrian Beltre under any circumstance… cmon man that’s terrible
There is no such thing as “under any circumstance.” I love Beltre with all my heart, but hell yes if someone comes knocking with a huge deal that blows you away for him, you absolutely consider that deal.
I could see him going to the Yankees or Dodgers. Both teams tend to be aggressive and I think LAD has one of their better teams in recent years so it makes sense to just go for it all. Especially if it’s too costly to acquire Gray from Oakland. I wouldn’t give up more than 2 mid level prospects for Darvish, though.
At this point, I think the only safe Ranger is Robinson Chirinos, and possibly A. Beltre.
Everyone else must at least be seriously discussed.
