The Yankees have contacted the Marlins about right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag. Don’t go penciling Stanton and Aaron Judge into the same lineup yet, though, as it seems this was just a case of due diligence on the Yankees’ part. They called the Marlins about Stanton “weeks ago” and haven’t picked up talks since, per Heyman, who reported Friday that the Fish probably won’t seriously market the slugger this summer. As has been pointed out on many occasions, the $295MM left on Stanton’s contract after this season, an opt-out at the conclusion of the 2020 campaign and his ability to block a trade to the majors’ other 29 teams are all notable impediments in the way of a potential deal anywhere.
More from around the majors:
- The Rays are seeking an “impact reliever” and perhaps some offensive help leading up to the trade deadline, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The club did add to its bullpen when it acquired Sergio Romo from the Dodgers on Saturday, but the 2017 version of the ex-Giants closer doesn’t inspire much confidence. As such, he won’t be their last relief addition, tweets FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal. The Rays will take a “responsible” approach to the deadline, writes Topkin, but a willingness to add salary and deal “good” prospects still exists. They’re also not ruling out trading someone from their major league roster, suggests Topkin.
- Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis and outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall are “still weeks away, not days,” manager Terry Francona told reporters Friday (via cleveland.com). Kipnis has been on the disabled list for most of this month with a hamstring issue, while a calf injury has kept Chisenhall out for a week. Team president Chris Antonetti admitted last weekend that not having the pair has “complicated” the Indians’ approach to the deadline, and the club has since come up as a potential suitor for a couple second base–capable players – the Giants’ Eduardo Nunez and former Indian Asdrubal Cabrera – as well as outfielder Jay Bruce.
- Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks, out for almost two months with a hand injury, will rejoin their rotation Monday against the White Sox, relays Carrie Muskat of MLB.com. This season was a struggle for Hendricks even before he went on the DL on June 5, as the 2016 NL Cy Young contender posted a so-so 4.09 ERA over 61 2/3 innings (up from 2.13 last year) and logged declining strikeout and walk rates. Still, Hendricks’ return – which will send swingman Mike Montgomery to the bullpen – will be a welcome one for a resurgent Cubs team that has won six of seven since the All-Star break and sits just one game behind Milwaukee for the National League Central lead.
dodgerfan711
If anyone can take on the contract its the Yanks. That would be one lethal lineup
Yankee4Life27
I wish… By the way, congrats on your Dodgers, best record in baseball.
seth3120
I agree they would be sick but if I’m the Yankees I’d be staying the course and spending huge on Harper. He’s one guy I’d be ok giving 10 years to without feeling like I was going to get killed on the back end.
sam1897
Harper is going to play with his. buddy kris bryant in chicago for the cubs
Philliesfan4life
the only way the cubs could get harper is if they can get out of the heyward contract, But with Bryant and Harper being boras clients, will be tough for the cubs to pay both of them.
thegreatcerealfamine
That is the goal and hopefully we can pencil him in opening day 2019. Good God a 2-5 in the lineup of Sanchez-Harper-Judge-Frazier would be Epic.
2016Chccahmps
LMFAO Frazier. I needed a good laugh this morning.
Perksy
I’m not paying for Harper. $400mil for 10 years, no thanks. He has all the ability in the world, but I’d rather have a more balanced team.
thegreatcerealfamine
What do you mean a more balanced team? With a top five player in the lineup in Harper..why wouldn’t that be dynamic? Who knows what that FA class will fetch, and the Yanks have plenty of dough.
Red Ivy
A lot can change in 2 years and Jhey can play a lot of positions. Knowing Theo’s track record it points to the Cubs taking a stab at signing Harper. Other teams will offer more money (via Jhey) but it’s up to harp. If he signs it will give the Cubs 3 years with Bryant and Harper together. The window will be starting to close near this time. It makes a lot of sense to sign him and figure out what to do with Bryant when that day comes. Make it rain Theo.
thegreatcerealfamine
Clint Frazier not Todd. Wanna LYAO watch Schwarber try and play LF!
Red Ivy
Harper “denied rumors” and you would too when this is something that would be a distraction for a season and a half. The top two contenders will most likely be the Cubs and the Yanks. Peter gammons shouldn’t have said anything whether it was the truth or not even though it was most likely legit.
fisher40
Harper is from LV Is LA bound in a few years. Either Dodgers or Angels
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Nope never gonna happen. He admitted he was trolling. The only way they bat back to back is the all star game. For the next 10+years. I’ve heard Harper is a real ahole. He would be a cancer in the cubs clubhouse.
IrishTerp
Heyward has an opt out after next year.
thegreatcerealfamine
Why did Gammons change up his Tweet to the Yankees? Bryce has said his favorite teams growing up were the Cowboys and Yankees, and he always wanted to play for both. My guess is he stands a better chance playing in the Bronx.
HalfAstros7
I’m not exactly sure why everyone seems to think the field for Harper is limited to the Cubs or the Yankees. By 2019 there will be 15+ teams ready to compete seriously and they will all have money to spend. The Nationals, Phillies, Dodgers, Giants, Cardinals, Redsox, Yankees, Astros, Rangers, and probably the Mariners will all be serious suitors, not to mention numerous sleeper teams. Harper will go where the money is and someone is going to overpay him.
thegreatcerealfamine
ok then…
themed
Why would he opt out? No one would be as stupid as the cubs to pay him that kind of money!
IrishTerp
Because his contract was front loaded and his salary goes down by $8M per year starting next year for the next four years.
IrishTerp
Sorry after next year it drops by $8 M per year.
Djones246890
I would say I was “trolling” too, in order for it to not be a distraction.
The story broke and he didn’t want it to. Plain and simple. Of course he would want to play with his best buddy, Bryant.
Cachhubguy
The Cubs don’t have to pay both of them. They CAN have both of them for 2 years.
thebare
A dynasty TV is the Cubs next move by your own station so all can see like WGN did a while back before they turn stupid a lost that and the Bozo show.down hill for them lol Being back my Cub games. Happy
Tiger_diesel92
I still think they should trade for mike trout instead of Stanton.
EndinStealth
The Angels will never trade Trout.
cxcx
Of course they could trade him at some point. I’m sure they would listen if the Yanks offered say Frazier, Torres, Mateo, Fowler, Kaprelian, Adams, and Sheffield.
halos101
no, they wouldn’t
mcdusty31
Not a bad haul
24TheKid
I think that would be a good haul, but with Mike Trout, you know you have the best player in the world right now. While all those prospects could turn into Dustin Ackley and Jesus Montero. Why not keep trying to compete while you still know you have the best player in the world instead of gambling on players that may never live up to anything?
Red Ivy
Sadly Trout prob won’t be traded until he’s a shell of himself a very long time from now
davidcoonce74
If trout is traded his contract has a poison pill in which he can opt out of the contract immediately after the season so he’d be a rental. So he’ll never be traded.
Shane Newbanks 2
Could you cite that for me? All I see is a full NTC.
Shane Newbanks 2
Yeah I see no such Opt-Out Clause in his contract.
davidcoonce74
Oops. Sorry. I got him confused with Kershaw. My mistake.
FromTheJuicingEra
poison pill (gulp)
thegreatcerealfamine
Kershaw,Stanton=NTC Point Mute!
Shane Newbanks 2
Also the Opt-Out is after 2018 for Kershaw.
jim31762
And the Edmonton Oilers will never trade Gretzky
a1544
Rays should consider Kinsler
Freddie Morales
Indians-Mets almost make too much sense not to happen
sufferforsnakes
Tribe has 2 guys that can play 2B, Ramirez and Gonzalez. Either of those or Urshela can play 3B. So that is a non-issue.
As for OF, Austin Jackson is coming back, plus Tyler Naquin or Yandy Diaz could both cover for Chis.
So dealing with the Mets makes zero sense.
thegreatcerealfamine
Those are pretty mediocre additions to get excited about.
sufferforsnakes
And what, Nunez, Cabrera (I only wanna play SS), or an overpaid defensive-liability in Bruce are guys to get excited about?
Gonzalez is hitting around .300 and provides GG defense, Urshela is holding his own with the bat while showing just how good a 3B he is. Did you see his D the last two games?
Jackson, Naquin, and Diaz have all contributed at the Major League level this year already.
bravesfan88
People always get so antsy this time of the season, they always overreact, and they always think their favorite team HAS TO make a trade for this player or for a certain position..
Just because you piss your pants at Wal-Mart, it doesn’t mean you can’t wait a little bit, make it home, and reach into your own drawer for some…You don’t have to immediately buy a new pair…
LA Sam
Sounds like u know of what u speak….maybe spare trousers in car n possible Dr.’s exam to correct problem, wish u all the luck….perhaps a new user name as well….soiledndampingeorgia88
sufferforsnakes
Wouldn’t some Depends be cheaper?
bravesfan88
Also “sounds like college u went to.”
Besides, I learn plenty of lessons from my leaky bladder. You should try it sometime, I’m sure, it couldn’t hurt.
Mikel Grady
I want the Cubs to get Chapman and watch all other gm’s sitting around overvaluing prospects and holding onto them while we win World Series . Then I want Quintana while everyone does nothing. So far so good.
ReverieDays
The Cubs are a sleeping giant that are finally waking up. Anyone who wrote them off in such a weak Division either doesn’t know much about baseball or was just bias against them.
thegreatcerealfamine
Bias against them..they haven’t mattered but a minute..So
detroitdave84
Yankees should trade Ellsbury & Gardner and prospects to Detroit for Justin Verlander & Justin Wilson. Verlander is a bull & thrives in the limelight and Justin Wilson already did well in NY once before. Tigers actually take on salary in exchange for top prospects. It would cost two top prospects and 4 next tier. Clears up the outfield for NY & gives them ammunition to make a run at Boston and Tampa.
Kylemcc
They would need to make them some good prospects for the Tigers to take on Ellsbury and Gardner.
seth3120
Nobody’s taking on those contracts. What is the Tigers payroll anyway? I’m not a Tigers fan but I feel like I read earlier this year or maybe before the season that they were looking to shed payroll or were strapped trying to stay under the cap. If that’s the case that proposal seems even more far fetched.
jerseyjohn
NO! Who wants Verlander’s decline, Wilson isn’t nearly sweet enough to make anyone swallow Verlander. Gardner isn’t dead money he can actually play, Ellsbury does suck so I give you that. The 6 prospects is where you jump the shark. Ells and Verlander’s crappy contracts are almost a wash, I’d give the Tigers maybe 2 B prospects for Wilson. Detroit is stuck with Verlander unless they eat tons of money no one cares that he was once great!
FromTheJuicingEra
Although, the Yankees’ camera crew would have The Judges AND Kate Upton to zoom in on in the stands then. Hmmm
acarneglia
I’ll trade Aaron Judge for Kate Upton
oldleftylong
I care.
Bald Vinny
If those prospects are Torres and Frazier.
BlueSkyLA
Has anyone with an opt-out in their contract ever been traded? I can’t think of one, offhand. Opt-outs might be the ultimate poison pill for trades, even worse than no-trade clauses. At least those can be waived, but the opt-out just hangs on.
JFactor
I imagine any Stanton trade would see the team asking him to not waive it
BlueSkyLA
A team can ask him to waive it, but why would he waive it? The entire premise of the opt-out is the player is trading somewhat less income on the front end for a guaranteed income on the back end, no matter what happens to his performance, and the ability to seek a more lucrative contract in a given number of years if he is still performing. The potential bonus for the player is in all the out years. No way any player gives that up unless he’s in decline. And who wants him then?
Bleeding Blue&Orange
While not exactly new, there inclusion in contracts has become much more prevalent in recent years. So there isn’t much history to go on with them. Making it very difficult to get a proper valuation of the deal
JKB 2
Oh stop the presses. The Marlins got a “call” on their best player. What breaking news that is …
IronBallsMcGinty
The Ray’s can get their bullpen arm and offensive help from the White Sox by making a deal for Anthony Swarzak and Melky Cabrera. Both players are having a solid season.
acarneglia
That would be a pretty good trade if they could pull it off
therealryan
Both are mediocre and rentals. Not saying the Rays might not trade for them but the return would be negligible.
guille
It makes absolutely NO SENSE for the Yankees to go after Stanton. The lineup is getting RHH heavy already, need to get under luxury tax threshold, plus huge FA crop in 2019 and Stanton’s contract is too expensive.
MB923
Jim Bowden : The #Yankees did NOT inquire about the #Marlins Giancarlo Stanton according to both teams. #FakeNews #FalseRumors #TradeDeadline
thebare
Tribes got 2 great catchers and Mejca the prospect so lets make a trade for one of there catchers give up cash and Candelea and Grimm who need a change of scenery.
