Matt Bush hasn’t been a shutdown closer for the Rangers, so they’ve stripped him of the job and will deploy a ninth-inning committee, writes T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com. “We’ll use multiple pitchers based on who is available and the set of hitters coming up,” said manager Jeff Banister. “We are not set on one single guy.” Each of Keone Kela, Alex Claudio and Jose Leclerc could get save opportunities, notes Sullivan. All three have outperformed Bush, who had a nightmarish June in which he blew three of seven save chances and allowed 10 earned runs on 21 hits in 9 1/3 innings. He’s the second Rangers closer to struggle mightily this season, joining predecessor and now-Giant Sam Dyson. - Athletics right-hander Andrew Triggs could undergo season-ending surgery if his ailing left hip doesn’t respond to treatment by the end of the month, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Triggs received a cortisone shot two weeks ago, but there hasn’t been much progress in his recovery since then. The 28-year-old is optimistic he’ll avoid surgery, but he’ll face a six-month recovery if he does go under the knife. Triggs has been on the disabled list since June 10, before which he posted a 4.27 ERA, 6.89 K/9, 2.62 BB/9Â and a 49.8 percent ground-ball rate across 65 1/3 innings.
- Left-hander C.C. Sabathia is on track to return to the Yankees’ rotation Tuesday, per Andrew Marchand of ESPN.com. Sabathia hasn’t pitched since suffering a Grade 2 hamstring strain in mid-June. Before that, the impending free agent helped his stock, not to mention New York’s playoff chances, with a 3.46 ERA and a 49.8 percent ground-ball rate over 75 1/3 frames.
- Meanwhile, righty Trevor Cahill will slot back into the Padres’ starting staff Tuesday, tweets Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune. With the trade deadline approaching, Cahill’s return will come at a good time for the rebuilding Padres. Cahill, out since mid-May with a shoulder strain, pitched like a front-line starter over 41 1/3 innings in the early going, logging a 3.27 ERA, 11.1 K/9 and a 60.2 percent ground-ball rate.
- One of the Twins’ top prospects, Double-A lefty Tyler Jay, is likely headed for season-ending surgery, according to Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press. Jay is being evaluated for thoracic outlet syndrome, which is not an easy injury from which to return (as the Twins’ Phil Hughes and the Mets’ Matt Harvey have shown). Jay, whom the Twins chose sixth overall in 2015, battled neck issues as a Double-A last season and entered 2017 as a reliever. His latest ailment has limited him to two innings this year.

Cahill should get 4-5 starts before the deadline. Hopefully thats enough time for him to replicate his earlier success and build up enough value to be moved. Its such a small sample size though it worries me that one bad start could scare off any interested buyers.
Padres are going to need to move some pitchers. They have too many coming off the DL in the coming month. The problem though is going to be generating interest for anyone not named Hand.
padresfan
Butcher Yates
Cahill
Cachin
Solarte (oh wait that not a pitcher)
SixFlagsMagicPadres
If Cahill pitches like was before the injury, there might be a few teams interested in him. Along with the guys padresfan listed, I’d imagine maybe Richard could generate some interest as well.
CNichols
Yates isn’t a FA until 2021, Buchter isn’t until 2022. If you think these guys are good bullpen pieces, no need to trade them now because they’re cost-controlled through the rest of the re-build.
I guess Chacin or Richard could be trade bait as depth pieces, but they have ERA’s closer to 5 than 4 and aren’t exactly the guys you’d want to be depending on for a push to the playoffs. Maybe they could go to the pen in a swingman role? If I were a buyer I’d look elsewhere for back-end pitching help, but if someone offers anything for either one I think Preller should take it.

Plenty more arms for that
Just wish Maurer would figure it out
I want him gone
bleacherbum
Yeah Maurer is terrible.
I don’t know why Andy Green insists on bringing him in when the game is tied either in the 9th or in extra’s. I was talking to my buddy about it the other day and every time he comes in when the game is tied he gives it up, if you haven’t noticed that yet pay attention to that from here on out. It’s sickening that Green won’t stop doing that.
padresfan
Oh I know
He has those moments of greatness
But that era isn’t lying… it’s bad
It could be AJs call not to have hand close. The opportunities are greater for him to just be able to pitch
Maton will be the padres future closer
davidcoonce74
Maurer has given up two leads this season.
davidcoonce74
Sorry, three.

I would expect the Padres to be shopping Cahill, Hand, Buchter, Stammen, Yates, Chacin, and Richard. Maybe even Maurer. The Padres have such a deep system that I would not be surprised at all to see them package some prospects with some of these pitchers and get a top 10 prospect and a MLB player or two with the contractual control they need during their rebuild.

Just terrible news for Tyler Jay and the Padres…
T.Jay was a very promising lefty for the Padres coming out of the draft, but that’s pretty much where the good news ended..It has to just be SOOO frustrating for both parties involved, but obviously especially for Jay…
To go from finally realizing all your dreams, and such an extreme high, and then bam it has been one unfortunate circumstance after another…Talk about a roller-coaster of emotions…
I’m definitely rooting for T.Jay, and hope and pray he can beat the odds, and ultimately make a healthy and complete recovery..Then, hopefully, after his T.O.S. surgery, and after he endures his intense and difficult rehab process, he can continue on his ML journey..
Here’s to you and yours kid.. Definitely wish you and your family all the best!!
Also, on a secondary side note, I truly feel for Padres fans and those who are fans of T.Jay…It really just sucks when such a promising and talented prospect goes down to such a severe injury!!

Tyler Jay plays for the Twins and was off the board by the time the Padres’ first pick came up in the 2015 draft.
outinleftfield
I didn’t think the Padres had a first round pick at all in 2015.
padresfan
They didn’t

You should save your condolences for the Twins.
davidcoonce74
This is an odd and surprisingly long post about a Padres player who actually plays for the Twins. I hope Jay comes back as well, as a Twins prospect.

Potential suitor for Cahill is virtually every team that are in contention… I hope that he nets decent return. Maybe he can be packaged with Hand to maximize the return? Cahill ( given he continues high performance), Hand and Solarte should at least net Devers and more from BOS in my opinion. But it is also possible that the BOS farm is so depleted that he may not be willing to move him.
I Believe We Can Win
Hand n solarte wont net devers. Groome possibly not devers.
s2alliot
Cahill(if he continues his stellar performance), Hand and Solarte for Devers, I said. I know Hand and Solarte wouldn’t bring in Devers. I was thinking that the BOS recently release knuckle baller? so I thought that there is a dire need for BOS to fill the hole in the rotation.

After all, I will be pretty happy if Preller can net one or more top 100 prospect by the deadline. I’m hoping that he makes a miraculous trade but at the same time we all know that Pomeranz-for-Espinoza type of deal is highly unlikely.
outinleftfield
Hand alone will bring the Padres at least one top 50-60 prospect and at least one more good quality prospect on top of that. Preller is in a good position to bring back several top prospects to add to the deepest farm system.

Get to a meeting..thinking doesn’t seem to be your strong suit.

But then, would Preller want to make that deal happen? I don’t know.
Only thing we can do as a padre fan at this point in time is to hope that AJ does his thing and hope that the kids he brings in will all turn out to be a superstar, especially in the midst of Padres being demolished by the Dodgers…
SixFlagsMagicPadres
It’s a deep farm, and Preller wants to make it even deeper. There will be the inevitable busts, but some of those guys will be bound to pan out.
padreforlife
Cahill would have more value going back to bullpen where he got his ring last year
