The Padres have designated infielder Chase d’Arnaud for assignment, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports (Twitter link). The move was made to create roster space for Trevor Cahill, who has been activated from the DL to start tonight’s game against the Indians.
[Updated Padres depth chart at Roster Resource]
This is the third time that d’Arnaud has entered DFA limbo this season, as he was previously designated by the Braves in April and then claimed by the Red Sox, only to be designated by Boston in May and then claimed by the Padres. In 62 combined plate appearances with all three clubs, d’Arnaud is hitting .190/.242/.276 while starting games at shortstop, second base, third base and left field.
Cahill returns to the San Diego rotation with plenty of time to impress potential suitors in the three weeks remaining before the trade deadline, though proving his health will be the first priority. Cahill has been limited to seven starts and 41 1/3 IP thanks to two separate DL stints due to back and shoulder injuries. When Cahill has been on the mound, he has looked impressive, posting a 3.27 ERA, 11.1 K/9, 3.00 K/BB rate and 60.2% grounder rate. With only around $825K owed to him for the remainder of the year, several teams could have interest in Cahill as low-cost help for the back end of a rotation or as bullpen depth.
I Believe We Can Win
After the Padres trade Hand, Cahill, Richard, Chacin definitely want to see Kelly, Lockett, Wieck and Villanueva get a call up.
El Duderino
Think someone will actually want Chacin?
I Believe We Can Win
For like cash considerstions or ptbnl yes

I hope someone takes him so that the Pads get some type of return, but his home versus away splits show he’s been incredibly bad when he doesn’t pitch at Petco.
His ERA in away games is 9.08. When he’s not pitching at Petco, opposing hitters are hitting .358 off of him. I really don’t understand why anyone in the hunt would want that, since if you’re acquiring him you’re taking him out of the only place he seems to be able to pitch.
outinleftfield
Last season Chacin had extreme home/away splits as well. 3.52 at home and 5.85 on the road for the Braves and Angels.
Chacin has had a 2.61 ERA since the beginning of June, so he has been pitching very well recently. In his last outing on the road, he gave up just 2 runs to the Cubbies in 6 IP. He is scheduled to pitch 2 of his next 4 starts on the road. A hot 10 game stretch coming into the deadline would make him a very good trade chip for the Padres.

This should be a fun exercise. Been so focused on what O’s should be doing, I haven’t looked much at what the team expected to do the most trading will do before the deadline.
While Preller’s goal would appear to be to trade all the starting pitchers that are on 1-year deals, getting 3 separate trades of starting pitchers done is a tall order. Maybe two will be moved with Richard the likeliest to stay in San Diego. His ERA is the highest of the group at 4.85 and he is also the oldest at 34. From the Padres perspective that is probably just fine since he is a leader in the clubhouse and a horse that will eat innings (104 already in the 1st half of the season). If Cahill returns and pitches even close to what he did before the injuries, he will be the most sought after Padres starter. Both because of his performance on the mound this season and also for his flexibility to start and come out of the pen. Chacin has been filthy his last 6 starts. While I had seen that he had only given up 2 ER in his first 4 games at Petco and how bad he was on the road in April and May, I didn’t realize how well he had done for you guys since the beginning of June. 2.61 ERA with 8.7 K/9 since in 5 games at home and 1 on the road. He will be a good trade target for a large number of teams.
In terms of starting rotation I had a few thoughts. The Padres have Friedrich coming back soon so their rotation would be Perdomo, Lamet, Freidrich, Richard, and Diaz when he returns from his injury. Diaz was a rule 5 pickup so he can’t be sent down and his work in the pen does not appear to be encouraging.
Had to look up Kelly and Weick because I was not familiar with them.
Isn’t Lockett on the DL? He probably won’t be called up since he has been hurt.
Kelly got roughed up a bit in his last outing after moving up to AAA. He gave up 5 runs in 3 1/3 iP but struck out 7. Have to wait and see how de does against AAA pitching over next few starts before Padres trades start to happen.
As far as the pen goes, the Padres are likely to trade Hand and Buchter, Stammen, and Yates could possibly be on the move too. They have Capps returning soon.
Weick dominated AA out of the pen this year, striking out 15 per 9 IP and has the same 2.70 ERA in his 1st 3 appearances in AAA. With Hand and possibly other relievers on the trading block, he seems to be the most likely of the 3 you mentioned to be called up to pitch out of the Padres pen.
Just from the stats and scouting reports I would think that the Padres have several other guys that could step up to the majors, if needed, in DePaula, De Los Santos, Rienzo, Wingenter, Nina, and Bawcom.
If he is traded solo, Hand has been rumored to be worth a group of 2-3 prospects headlined by a top 50-100 prospect. 1-2 new players to be added to Padres 40 man roster.
Villanueva plays 3B, doesn’t he? I would not be surprised to see Villanueva packaged with one of the pitchers you mentioned to bring back higher quality prospects and MLB ready players. It looks like he has had a heck of a first half. .300 with 15 HR and .950 OPS. It is El Paso and the PCL so the numbers are inflated a bit, but it’s impressive for a prospect the Cubs wrote off after an injury.
As for position players, I don’t see many that can be traded. Solarte is hurt and is on a team friendly deal that can go as long as 4 years. Aybar is the only SS on the squad other than Cordoba and it looks like the Padres want to limit the exposure for a kid that had never played above short season rookie ball before 2017. Myers, Hedges, Renfroe, and Margot are the core of the team right now. Cordoba and Torrens are Rule 5 picks. Maybe Spangenberg? With Solarte on the DL probably not. Maybe Pirela? He is the only one that makes sense an dhe has had a hot bat in AAA and in the majors, but he is not a good defensive player at any position
What Preller does in trades is going to be fascinating. He needs to make several trades and he is coming off that suspension for withholding medical information in a trade. Will other teams be willing to trade with him? I would bet a few GMs may be wary, but in the end, if the Padres have the players your team needs, then it’s biting your nose to spite your face not to trade with them.
Considering the sheer volume of players on the trading block for the Padres and how little they are spending on player payroll, I would not be surprised to see a blockbuster. A 3-4 for one trade or 4 for two trade with the Padres acquiring an established star on a long-term deal or a great MLB ready prospect with multiple years of control.
It’s got to be an interesting time to be a Padres fan. You don’t know who you will be rooting for on the field after August 1st. Could be seeing 5-6 or even more new players.

Pointless is a great description for everything you post. Oops, did I speak truth to the troll?

Perfectly.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Padres have to trade Richard and Stammen cuz they are pending FA’s and not a single GM will be wary of trading with Preller.
padreforlife
Really Buster Olney you know this because..

Really Peter Gammons you know otherwise because…

I think GM’s will trade with Preller because there’s no way he would make that mistake again. That would mean his career is done. He may be overly upfront now just to make up for the past.
padreforlife
He’s done it twice already dude could be desperate
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Not a chance. If Preller gets busted again he’ll never have another job in MLB again and MLB IS keeping tabs on him. You have still failed to show us a single shred of evidence that other team’s don’t want to trade with Preller. Give it up, dude, not a single GM will have any problems trading with Preller if it fills a need for his team.
padreforlife
When Preller makes significant trade we will see
padreforlife
It won’t be Red Sox
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
No we won’t see you nitwit! We already know. Preller can trade with whoever he wants. He already has made trades as a matter of fact (see Norris, Derek) and received calls on other players (see Jankowski, Travis). I know you will say that Norris wasn’t a significant trade but Padres really had no one else to trade last offseason. You have to have something to trade in order to make significant trades.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
It will if they need something we have and can’t get better value elsewhere. They already tried to trade the Padres for relief pitching last August.
padreforlife
Norris and Janko yea real blockbusters!
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Jankowski wasn’t traded and Norris was the only guy the Padres even had to trade last year

It is always hard seeing a guy get DFA’d who has such an upbeat personality and is a total team first guy. Super like able dude, hopefully he gets another shot somewhere. WSH might be a good bet, to get some starts in Turner’s absence. Him and his wife just had a baby a couple days ago so this must be pretty crappy news for him today.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
He seemed like a pretty fun guy to have on the team. Maybe he’ll be picked up by another team soon.
BravesBoi
Coming back to the Braves? Lol just kidding. Besides him being a good guy, really versatile and fast, he offers nothing. Hits for no power. Hits almost nothing really
