Here are some notable National League international signings not yet covered elsewhere on MLB Trade Rumors. All signing information can be found in these invaluable compilations of the initial flurry of July 2 action from Baseball America’s Ben Badler and MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez; the information here is from those sources unless otherwise credited…
- The Mets agreed to deals with Dominican shortstops Ronny Mauricio and Adrian Hernandez. Mauricio will get a $2.1MM bonus while Hernandez receives $1.5MM.
- The Phillies reached agreement with Dominican shortstop Luis Garcia on a deal with a $2.5MM bonus.
- The Marlins have agree to sign Ynmanol Marinez, a shortstop from the Dominican Republic. The exact figures on Marinez’s bonus aren’t known, though the 16-year-old will get in the neighborhood of $1.3MM-$1.5MM.
- The Brewers agreed to sign Dominican outfielder Larry Ernesto for a bonus in the range of $1.7MM-$1.8MM (BA had the lower figure, MLB.com the higher). Milwaukee has also reached a deal with Venezuelan outfielder Carlos Rodriguez for a $1.355MM bonus.
- The Cubs agreed to sign Mexican shortstop Luis Verdugo for a $1MM bonus.
- The Diamondbacks have an agreement with outfielder Kristian Robinson. The 16-year-old native of Nassau, Bahamas will receive $2.5MM from Arizona.

On MLB at bat it says Adrian Hernandez is an outfielder not a shortstop

FanGraphs says outfielder too.

It will be ok guys lol. In 8 years when they reach the majors they will probably be playing another position anyway. Their is no awards for catching errors lol

RenoChris…..Errors as in “Their is no awards”?? Do they not teach English in Reno? Lol
Unfortunately, there aren’t any awards for the worst grammar.
🙂

Oooooooohhhhhhh you got me smart guy!!!! You feel better about yourself nerd?
RenoChris

Outfielders dont typically play other positions. You move SS, 2B, 1B, 2B TO the outfield. You dont put a RF at 3B or a LF at 2B. Doesnt happen often.

Exactly. I’m not familiar with the player, but my guess is that Hernandez is currently playing shortstop because he’s a great athlete relative to a bunch of 16 year olds, but not scouts seem to believe that he has the tools (could be hands, arm, lateral quickness, whatever) to play infield professionally, so each of those other outlets listed him as an outfielder, while MLB.com listed him as a SS because that’s what he is right now, even if he won’t be in a few months

If anyone’s confused (I was), the Cubs are still in the “penalty box,” limiting the club’s bonus per int’l signee to $300K, but signing Luis Verdugo for a $1M bonus is still allowed. The Cubs use what some consider a loophole but essentially equates to a posting fee. Int’l draftees from the Mexican League only receive 25% of the listed signing bonus, with the remaining 75% going to the player’s Mexican League team. Under int’l signing rules, only the amount received by the player counts as a bonus, so Verdugo’s bonus is technically considered only $250K.
The Cubs are expected to sign Florencio Serrano (#29 int’l prospect, per BA) the same way.

” but signing Luis Verdugo for a $1M bonus is still allowed. ”
And the Mexican league team agrees to buy Luis’s parents a new house.
Teams with owners who want to win will always find a way.

Don’t be confused any longer. That’s been the rule since the new CBA. The article probably should have mentioned it though

So are you going to do a team by team round up of the IFA or by division or by league?
I mean I’d like to see a by division one round up where you look at who each team signed from where, how much etc. and determine the best signing, worst signing, and who might be an unheralded guy that didnt get much attention but could wind up do something.

That has to be a typo…the Marlins did something internationally? I don’t even know when the last time they did that even was. Considering the money they saved on the draft and dumping Hech, they should finally be using it to get some talent into the organization.

“Marlins did something internationally? I don’t even know when the last time they did that”
When John Henry (current Red Sox owner) signed Miguel Cabrera out of Venezuela for $1.9 million in 1999.

Phillies must be collecting players named Luis Garcia.
raef715
yes, while the White Sox just generally like guys named Garcia, the Phillies are more specific.
Dan_Oz
Does every Dominican team consist of 9 shortstops?
frankthetank1985
And they are all 16. Lol
