TODAY: Ramirez cleared waivers and elected to become a free agent, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo tweets.
THURSDAY: The Mets announced that they’ve activated left-hander Josh Smoker from the disabled list and designated right-hander Neil Ramirez for assignment in order to clear a spot on the roster.
The 28-year-old Ramirez has bounced between the Giants, Blue Jays and Mets organizations this year, though the majority of his season has been spent in Queens. In 21 innings with the Mets, he’s struggled to a 6.43 ERA with an impressive 26 strikeouts but also a troubling 17 walks. Overall, Ramirez has a 7.18 ERA with 12.6 K/9 against 6.0 BB/9 in 31 1/3 innings between the Giants and Mets this year.
Fun fact: Neil was drafted by the Rangers in 2007 four picks before the Cubs took Josh Donaldson.

I wonder what the record is for most teams played for in two years. Neil is up to five and he was up with Toronto for a few days but did not get into a game.

I bet that’s 5 more teams then you have been on. Obviously those teams saw something in him. Everyone has their struggles negative vibes aren’t needed.

Not being negative, just stating facts. I was sorry to see him leave the Cubs. It would be cool for him to play for another MLB team this year. Feel better?

Easy, Mrs. Ramirez.

Someone sure is cranky.

Could be his sister or his mom. His wife’s name is Tiffany. Or it could be an impostor.
bastros88
you say that like being on 5 teams in a short period of time is a good thing.

Thank you Oprah

There are 13 players in MLB history who were with 4 teams in 1 season (that record means they actually played at least 1 game with the team). So 5 teams in 2 seasons (where said player didn’t necessarily get to play a game with the team) probably isn’t anywhere close to a record.

I’m not surprised I watched him a couple times this year and frankly I wasn’t impressed.

Really it took this long to dfa him

New Ramirez has a great arm, he’s a good good guy, but has terrible control, hence the DFA and moving from team to team. I hope and pray he could harness that amazing arm.

Ramirez as a free agent should not impact any contender’s deadline deals.
His best hope is to sign on in Miami once they dump their qualified relievers….

Unfortunately at this point he’s a few years removed from his success in Chicago and his peripherals haven’t pegged him as any better than a 4.50 ERA guy.
At this point I think it would be smart for him to try Indy. Overseas doesn’t really help pitchers as much. Only ones off the top of my head who have found success in Japan (from the majors) are Hector Noesi, Miles Mikolas and Ryan Messenger. Its much more hitter friendly over there.
Anyway, I feel like going over to the Atlantic League or something would be good for him. It would be a low-pressure situation for him to work some kinks out with his control and hopefully draw interest over time.
