TODAY, 12:03pm: The procedure wasn’t a major one, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald (via Twitter). Prado could return in three to five weeks after a “cleanup” operation.
9:18am: Prado will undergo surgery, according to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag (via Twitter). The precise nature of the procedure and anticipated recovery period are not yet known, but clearly he won’t be a trade candidate for teams looking at third base options.
YESTERDAY: With his knee failing to progress as hoped, Marlins third baseman Martin Prado is weighing a surgical approach, manager Don Mattingly tells Craig Davis of the Sun Sentinel (via Twitter). He’ll make a final decision tomorrow.
The 33-year-old infielder had drawn some interest as a trade candidate. In the midst of a roster reshaping and organizational sale, the Marlins have seemed motivated to move some of the sizable contract — three years and $40MM — that Prado just began this season.
Leg troubles and performance problems, though, had already made a trade seem like an unlikely proposition. Prado was slashing just .250/.279/.357 in his 147 plate appearances on the year, and recently hit the DL for the third time after two prior placements connected to hamstring troubles.
In any event, today’s news makes it all but certain that Prado won’t be traded in the next few days. His contract will surely clear waivers in August, so he could conceivably be dealt at a later point, though that’d likely also require that he make it back on the field in time to prove his health.

Was hoping the Braves might have interest since we love him in Atlanta. For a lower level spec or two he could play 3B for us until our young prospects like Riley or Maitan are ready.
The surgery thing changes everything. Of course the contract was an issue too, but we could have worked something out regarding that.
Martin is an awesome guy, wish him the best of luck with his knee and surgery especially if he has to go under the knife.

It would have to be at least one or two mid level prospects. Prado’s contract isn’t the best but he’s a valuable guy on the team

Ya would have depended on if any of the contract was covered. Because even though his injury has probably directly caused it, his performance this year has not been good. 0.1 WAR on the year in 147 PA’s is not Prado like. Maybe age is starting to play a factor too.
If he doesn’t need surgery and can show a turn around the 2nd half, if Atlanta takes on the full contract the next two years I think they could get him for a guy like Yefri Del Rosario or Yunior Severino. Both guys far away, but plenty of upside and have shown success and some projectable tools.

As much as I love him, we have too many infielders right now.
RunDMC
Agreed, we’ve got the younger version of him in Camargo right now. Until they can pull the trigger on BP and Adams, there’s no room in the inn. And ironically, MIA brass seems to value vets with character and clubhouse presence, so I don’t see MIA dealing him. He’s been key to dealing with the Fernandez tragedy.

Terrible year for Prado
If healthy, I’d take him on my team any time

Dumb question!!! Who pays for the surgery?Prado or Marlins?
wartdog
The team of course, but if you wanna get technical they have health insurance like all big businesses for their employees that covers. I imagine the premium costs a pretty penny though.
I don’t know if they have an all encompassing plan that includes all their affiliates though, or if their MiLB teams have separate insurance plans.

Honestly, Genuinely like Prado. Based on his versatility and clubhouse presence alone. He’d be a fit for pretty much any organization not located in Detroit (as they’re trying to cut money) or SF for tht matter but as a salary dump piece, I’d certainly be interested. in todays market $28.5/2 years isn’t unbearable. If you acquire him now, let him get the surgery, get healthy and bring him back when he’s 100%- definitely a decent buy low option.

What he said ^^

Buy low is right- For old times sake hart will send you his jerry johnson rookie card 😉 if you want real prospect cash u will have to let him prove healthy and consistent or send cash. I have no doubt he can, but things happen and we already have cash tied up in a “Pradoesque” rodriguez. We need to be talking stanton. Prado and stanton for teheran fried pache markakis and vizzy?

I can see Prado being a successful coach and/or manager with his great leadership skills. As a player he has reached a point in his career where he is injured more than he’s healthy, and most teams aren’t in the market for that regardless of his intangibles.

Hate to see Victor Martinez’s doppelgänger suffering from the same issue.
