TODAY: Bird released a statement through his agent, saying that he is hopeful that the procedure will finally resolve what had been an “increasingly frustrating” situation with his ankle. He also expressed a determination to return to the majors this season.
YESTERDAY: Yankees first baseman Greg Bird will undergo surgery on his right ankle, manager Joe Girardi told reporters including MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch (via Twitter). Per the skipper, Bird will be down for at least six weeks while recovering, but it isn’t clear just how soon he’ll again represent an option at the major league level.
While the news isn’t promising for New York, it had been anticipated by this point. Bird has struggled with ongoing ankle issues for much of the year, and was recently diagnosed with os trigonum syndrome. The organization will obviously take the long view here and hope the young slugger can fully put the ankle woes behind him.
Notably, the 24-year-old will continue accruing MLB service time for the duration of his DL stint — as he has been all year. He will have over two full years of service on his ledger at season’s end, even though he has played in just 65 total games in the majors.

That “Insider” must feel like an idiot now. For those who don’t know , there were rumors about a week ago saying a Yankee Insider felt there was nothing wrong with Bird and that he could be faking the injury because he’d be too scared to play since he likely wouldn’t be as good as Judge or Sanchez.
jdgoat
I think you’re getting the words “insider” and “troll” mixed up lol.
beauvandertulip
Reading news from the insider and taking it to heart is like reading Reddit. Like it hardly has credibility.
srechter
That article pissed me off so much when I read it. Such an obvious case of artificial drama for the tabloids, all at the mental expense of a player we should be rooting for. Messed up.
start_wearing_purple
Any time I hear about a source in the organization I tend to figure it’s the neighbor of the sister of cousin of the guy who delivered pizza to GM’s secretary’s mother.
MB923
Hahaha
waywardyankee
I guarantee it was that jackass Randy Levine. Wouldn’t be the first time he’s run down a player like that in the press.
acarneglia
The Yankees have interest in Todd Frazier and David Robertson, maybe they could do a trade for those two plus Jose Abreu.
yanks02026
I think Jose would be a great fit for the Yankees
dazedatnoon
don’t think Abreu is moving….unless its an offer the Yankee fans REALLY won’t like.
GoSoxGo
What do you propose to offer for those three players?
srechter
Yankees fans here will probably only offer you a hair or two from Clint Frazier’s glorious mane. They’d never go three hairs, though. That’d be too far.
MB923
I’m a Yankee fan and I’m not like that at all. See what I wrote just below.
Priggs89
Lol excellent response
MB923
Jose makes sense but he’d probably cost both Torres and Frazier (maybe another 1 or 2 as well) IF the Yankees package to get Abreu and Robertson
I’m not saying the Yankees should do that. I just think that’s would Hahn would ask for.
Kayrall
I agree that it would require more than A ball throw-ins, but both Torres and Frazier seems a bit steep. Definitely one of those plus more lesser, but not both.
MB923
I agree it’s steep but you have to think that’s what Hahn would ask for. I read he asked for both of them for Quintana. He’d probably do the same for Abreu + Robertson.
Priggs89
I read he asked for Torres OR Frazier (plus more obviously) in a Quintana deal.
In regards to Abreu, I don’t think the Sox are actively looking to move him at all. I think they’re perfectly happy with him being the veteran clubhouse leader for when the prospects (especially Moncada) start coming up. That being said, if they were offered both Torres and Frazier, I think they would pull the trigger. As a Sox fan, I also think that’s a little too steep.
MahatmaGagne
Abreu makes sense for the Yanks, but yes the cost would be high. Doubt that fits into long term plans
Agone just started hitting off the tee, if the Dodgers pay most of his contract does anyone think he would be a good fit for the Yanks. He could possibly hold 1B down next year til Bird or whomever is ready. Thoughts?
I do see Alonso as a perfect match for the Yanks short/long term plans
thegreatcerealfamine
Fake news alert.
JU11904
Don’t want either. Big money for mediocre performance. Keep the prospects.
Priggs89
I agree if you are talking about Frazier (although he’d be a cheap “upgrade”). The other two players mentioned have not been “mediocre” this year.
dazedatnoon
DRob is a perfect fit here. He has history with this team.
Frazier can fill in at 3B with Headley sliding over to 1B or either way. Seems like a match….
After all the buzz regarding Frazier to the Red Sox, I’m guessing Yankees are throwing some chips in or this deal would be over already. Curious to see who folds first….
majorflaw
“Frazier can fill in at 3B with Headley sliding over to 1B or either way.”
That kinda misses the point. The Yankees are looking for a 3B because Headley hasn’t produced enough offensively. Moving him to 1B would only exacerbate the problem. Yanks don’t want someone who will play alongside Headley, they want someone who will repeal and replace Headley.
outinleftfield
How will this affect the Yankees trades? Will they go after a rental at 1B? Maybe Alonso?
jade 2
Alonso & Gray seems like a no brainer.
JU11904
It would be a bummer to see them deal Blake Rutherford to Oakland in that deal. I read that the A’s scouted him yesterday. Consensus seems to be that he was a steal in last year’s draft. It would be great to see him develop for the Yanks. Alonso is a mediocre guy in a career year and Gray is consistently hurt.
Henduland
Rutherford, Adams, Acevdeo, Solak for Gray and Lowrie.
JU11904
Nice deal for the A’s…
Henduland
I meant Gray and Alonso, not Lowrie.
Yankees may take it,maybe sub out Sheffield for Adams and Cashman bites. He doesn’t have to give up Frazier or Torres. Gets a nice 1B rental and a young starter signed through 2019. Rutherford is hard to give up, but he’s years away.
dobsonel
Yeah Yanks can get a deal done without Frazier or Torres being included. Rutherford won’t be ready until at least 2020 and by then you’ll hopefully have Judge and Frazier along with Fowler or an extended Hicks. Not to mention a few other options in the system.
rycm131
Sorry to hear this. Get well soon for sure.
julyn82001
The Boss would’ve had called A’s Billy Beane about Alonso already…
notagain27
“The Boss” didn’t have a Luxury Tax to contend with! Can’t buy them all like they used to, actually takes a farm system and key free agent acquisitions to win in today’s game.
tank62
The boss also made terrible trades like Jay Buhner for Ken Phelps. Al Leiter for Jesse Barfield Fred McGriff for nobody
Hell he wanted to trade Bernie Williams and Later Mariano
So let’s not glorify everything the Boss touched
gofish 2
“What the he** did you trade Jay Buhner for?!”
“My people kept telling me ‘Ken Phelps, Ken Phelps'”
majorflaw
“The Boss didn’t have a Luxury Tax to contend with.”
Um….
The “luxury tax”, later “competitive balance” tax, was created by the 1996 collective bargaining agreement. GMS III most certainly did have to contend with the luxury tax. Yanks wrote a large check to MLB every year. Resented it every year too.
LA Sam
The Boss was tryin to win, junior is tryin to make money, 2 different blue prints.
JU11904
When was George Steinbrenner trying to win? Maybe in the 1975-78 time period. After that, it was all and only about George getting publicity as he drove the team into the ground for 12 years until he was banned. By the time he came back, actual baseball people took over and George was too addled to get in the way anymore. That’s how things got better.
Henduland
Who do you think was involved in moves like the David Justice trade and even little deals like trading for Jose Canseco to keep him off the A’s so he couldn’t hurt the Yankees in the postseason? Steinbrenner.
LA Sam
It was, front office whispers he wasn’t hurt as bad as he was “pretending,” same front office who managed to piss off Betances during arbitration process….
thegreatcerealfamine
Where did you get that?
LA Sam
July 7, Pinestripe Alley, Sporting News, The Comeback, Bronx Pinestripes, that’s just the first 4 that came up on google, next time do ur own leg work, all criticizing yanks front office for criticizing hurt player…..
thegreatcerealfamine
I just you a question. Why get bent? The fact you said it was the same people in arbitration is questionable. WTF
thegreatcerealfamine
*asked
xabial
It’s more complicated than you think. Punks like Nypost with their “anonymous” sources are questioning Bird’s character and willingness to play the game, The man is on the DL with a serious Knee injury. Even Girardi had to come out and defend Bird’s character against these vicious
Attacks questioning Bird’s love for the game
Thanks for spreading “fake news” LASam.
It’s not bad enough Yankees have the worst 1B situation in the league?
Kick them while they’re down, or more specifically, kick Bird while he’s down.
“Front office whispers” Low even for you.
thegreatcerealfamine
Guy can use Google hooray.
LA Sam
Good thing they got that AAAA guy from Brewers…..WS here we come!!!!
thegreatcerealfamine
How’s that 29 year drought working out for you?
terry g
Hopefully the surgery and recovery go well. I don’t think this changes what Cashman will do before the deadline. Just my opinion but I don’t think he’s thinking of a big trade.
dazedatnoon
maybe just running the price up before he bows out???
TraderRyan9
The dumbest fans on here are from Chicago. Mostly White Sox fans
MB923
There are a lot of dumb fans for every fan base. And there are a lot of smart fans too for every fan base. Out of curiosity why do you say White Sox fans are the dumbest?
Henduland
Because White Sox fans listen to Hawk Harrelson every night.
Priggs89
Lol. Only half the nights, thankfully.
Henduland
I listen to ONE Hawk game a year when the “good guys” play the A’s. Just to remind myself how terrible Hawk is in comparison to most team’s announcers.
Priggs89
I can’t argue with that
Henduland
I mean, Hawk is stunningly awful. The A’s announcer Glen Kuiper, is terrible and has botched calls like two weeks ago he said the A’s were going to win it in a wakoff when the runner was held at third. But even Kuiper doesn’t approach Hawk, who sounds like a drunk fan in the bleachers.
Henduland
Alonso for Acevdeo and someone ranked 15-25 in the Yankees system.
yankees_fan74
You don’t give up do you. Do you wear the way or home A’s hat?
Henduland
You don’t write at 4th grade level do u? What’s the “way” A’s hat, doofus?
MurderersRow27
I don’t see the Yankees trading Acevedo and a prospect ranked 15-25 in their system for 2 months of Alonso.
PhilsBlibbed
So, with the Pineda and Bird injuries, what would a Joseph/Hellickson combo get the Phillies? Anything more than a handful of lotto ticket prospects?
El Duderino
If they pay for Hellickson’s salary, probably a couple of guys in the 15-30 range.
ffjsisk
Matt Adams would rake in that park
Play the Game
I maybe another Dumb Whitesox fan but the Yankees are in trouble real trouble.
Abreu
Frazier
Robertson
Swarzak
For a couple of their top prospects is a good deal for both teams. Yankees have 18 blown saves 18 and they have Chapman. Wake up next year Judge could have a Kris Bryant like year.Sale is best pitcher in American League and he can smell the playoffs.
Henduland
This site is full of delusional Yankee fans who think they can get MLB talent for their #25 ranked prospect.
MurderersRow27
According to MLB.com, the Yankees #25 prospect is Jorge Guzman (1 of the 2 pitchers they got from the Astros in the Brian McCann trade. He’s a 21 year old SP that works 97-103 with his fastball deep into games. With that said, he wouldn’t be a headliner in a package for any deadline studs (Gray, Darvish, Robertson, etc etc) but he could probably fetch a rental middle reliever or be a secondary piece to a trade for a rental 1B/3B. You say this site is full of delusional Yankees fans, but in reality, this site is full of delusional (and some reasonable) fans of EVERY team…
thegreatcerealfamine
And guys like him,who aren’t really fans.
thegreatcerealfamine
They’re ahead of schedule!!!
KnicksFanCavsFan
I’m not desperate for the Yanks to trade for a 1B. We have a couple of rookies we can play in Ji-Man Choi and AAA’s Mike Ford. If the cost is a top 5 organizational prospect then I’ll pass.
Furthermore, we have to look at things realistically. Our current rotation highlights a shaky Tanaka, a past his prime but solid Sabathia and two fairly inexperienced kids. We are not 1 or 2 fading stars away from being a WS contender and that is the only goal.
Make smart incremental moves and see what your young guys can do. Shoot for 2018 as the year you really try and compete.
billysbballz
I agree KnicksCavsRangersJets!
I concur!
tac3
Tommy Jospeh of the Phillies is available. Has hit 36hrs in a seasons worth of at bats. We are looking to trade him due to Rhys Hoskins. Gotta see what he has. Have your GM contact ours, I’m sure you can wrestle him away without a top 5 prospect. We also have Neshtek… throwing at an allstar level this year.
willi
I’ll think it take an number Five and two guys from 11/20 range
tac3
I’d take it, but I’m not sure the Yanks would. I’d a take a top 5, for both of them. I just want Jospeh gone so the Rhys Hoskins era can begin.

Here’s a deal for Oakland troll fans which is better then any deal I’ve heard them offer.
First off Rutherford is not in any Oakland deal neither is Frazier or Torres!
If that’s an issue go to Brewers for Bronson.
Deal is as follows:
Florial and Acevedo (two top ten prospects)
Bryan Mitchell and Ian Clarkin (two top 20s) plus a fringe prospect.
But with this deal I’m thinking the Yanks are giving up too much!
Also can do Aaron Hicks, Florial, Mitchell, Clarkin for Sonny Gray and Jed Lowrie, no Alonso in the deal.
Headley moves over to first and Lowrie to third.
Hicks coming into his own, still young, with two years of control that Oakland can either flip or sign long term to play CF.
Couple options there for ya.
billysbballz
Sorry both deals were for Sonny Grey and second one added Lowrie.
Also that was suppose to be Brinson!
julyn82001
The “boss” wouldn’t hesitate to part with any prospects plus that luxury tax wouldn’t be a concern to Georgie…
driftcat28 2
This is a new era, and you’ll find a lot of Yankees fans prefer it this way than the old
