Representatives from both the Yankees and Marlins told Jim Bowden of Sirius XM that New York has not inquired about Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton, which conflicts with a previous report. Bowden received a text message from a Marlins executive who declared that “all the buzz is false” on a potential Stanton-Yankees union (Twitter links). Regardless of whether the Yankees have checked in on Stanton, it’s an extreme long shot that he’d end up with them.
More from these two cities and another East Coast spot:
- The Wayne Rothbaum-Jeb Bush-Tom Glavine group bidding for the Marlins lost Tagg Romney this week, and now Dave Stewart and Al Leiter have left the faction, reports Robert Murray of FanRag. Thanks to their accomplished careers as major league pitchers, Stewart and Leiter brought name value to the table for a potential ownership team (as Glavine does), but neither would have had a large role in terms of putting up money to acquire the Marlins. So, even with Stewart and Leiter gone, Rothbaum & Co. remain in the mix to purchase the franchise, per Murray.
- The Red Sox are continuing to explore the third base market as the trade deadline nears, leading Scott Lauber of ESPN.com, Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe and Chad Jennings of the Boston Herald to break down their possible options. Both Lauber and Cafardo bring up Blue Jays right fielder Jose Bautista as an outside-the-box possibility, and while he does have 389 games of experience at third, he hasn’t played there extensively since 2011. Unsurprisingly, then, the Red Sox haven’t discussed acquiring the 36-year-old, a source told Lauber. Meanwhile, Brown urges the Red Sox to reunite with Adrian Beltre, who thrived in Boston in 2010 before signing with the Rangers in the ensuing offseason. There are roadblocks in the way, though, including whether the Rangers would even consider moving the should-be Hall of Famer and franchise icon, who’s on an $18MM salary through next season, and whether he’d waive his no-trade clause.
- With the deadline just over a week away, Joel Sherman of the New York Post proposes several Mets trades, including one that would see them send first baseman Lucas Duda to the Yankees for a four-player package of major league-ready talent. A New York-New York swap would be a win-win in this case, Sherman argues, as the Mets would get something for an impending free agent and the Yankees would solve their first base woes for the stretch run. Further, dealing a few players would help the Yankees with the 40-man roster crunch they could face during the offseason.
PBABowler27
I suggested the Bautista to Boston on Twitter and the majority of my followers called me crazy. I don’t think it’s anything ideal, but it gives them an offensive upgrade over anyone they’ve thrown out there this season.
a1544
Might as well put Hanley there and have devers DH. Won’t have to worry about devers defense. You’re gonna have to worry about defense if you’re putting Bautista or Hanley there
bheath33
Devers D is better then Hanley… question with Devers is couple years from now when he gets bigger and matures…. he handles 3rd ok for now
bheath33
He is not an upgrade, WAR is a limited stat but Devan Marrero is .3 and Bautista is -.1 … add in worse defense and Bautista will be even worse. The guy to get is Cozart and move him over, everyone will still consider Cozart a SS during FA and will give him a big stage to show case himself…. win-win
mookiessnarl
Would love to see the Sox go after Cozart, and try him at third base. And I agree completely about Bautista, The only thing he does better than Marrero at this point is hit homeruns. Any benefit that can be had in that area would be eliminated by his defense. Even watching him play right field, it’s obvious the guy can’t really move around anymore.
xpensivewinos
If they got Cozart, they could just slide Bogaerts over to 3B……
mookiessnarl
You must not be a Red Sox fan…
mcase7187
Will people stop being stupid by saying move Bogaerts to 3rd they did that he failed and it messed him all up where he couldn’t hit.our of a paper bag
weatherwiz
They don’t need Bautista though. Yes they’ve struggled with providing offense at 3B but they have been receiving solid offensive production elsewhere in the lineup.and despite lack of production at 3B they sit in the top 10 in most offensive categories (obviously except HR’s and slugging). I would focus on adding maybe another SP or a strong bullpen arm. Pitching will be more important down the stretch than an upgrade at 3B
PeterDipersio
Why not trade for Bautista and slot him in at DH as a replacement for Ortiz! Then keep Holt at 3rd
redsox for_life
DD should trade Devers and Groome for Machado!!
PeterDipersio
No!
MurderersRow27
It would take way more than just Devers and Groome for Machado dude.
mcase7187
Not really he’s a free agent at the end of the yr and he’s probably not sticking around in KC after that anyways
But by no means should the Sox do that
MurderersRow27
He’s a free agent after next year…
mstrchef13
You are confusing Machado with Moustakas. Wow.
JKB 2
Are all Red Sox fans this delusional? Sure Devers and Groome for Machado. Why didnt DD think of that? Huh? Oh and I guess it should be the O’s calling DD and saying hey how about Machado for Devers and Groome???
Delusional Red Sox fanbase
PeterDipersio
Must be a Yankees fan to talk like that!
BadlyBent
No disrespect to Stewart and Leiter, but some also consider Glavine an “accomplished major league pitcher.”
I’m looking forward to seeing how quickly Glavine takes off his MLBPA hat if he becomes an owner.
User 4245925809
Combo a Union friendly owner with one of the most inept GM’s in modern history (Dave Stewart) and the new Marlins ownership team would be well on the way to continue it’s bumbling way of the past post John Henry ownership..

Who would trade 4 players for Lucas Duda
jerseyjohn
Sherman’s 4 for 1 trade proposal is freaking terrible. If the Mets think someone is giving them 4 decent prospects for Duda they are in for a long wait. I would love the Yanks to get Duda but I’m thinking 2 middling prospects should get it done.
chris5
Depends how you define middling. If that means no names in low A then if I were the Mets I would rather risk Duda accepting a QO then for that. Duda is a legitimately above average player who would excel at Yankee Stadium. If the Yanks are interested in paying an adequate price, maybe one of the their prospects in their 5-9 range and another in 20-30, I think that would be more reasonable.
frankthetank1985
Agree completely chris. People don’t realize Duda had value. Especially in the cheap porch of yankee stadium. Perfect fit for yanks. He could rip off 15 to 20 hr for them in the next two months.
gocincy
15-20 homers in the next two months for Duda? I’ll take the under on that bet.
jerseyjohn
The Mets will not give Duda a qualifying offer no way are they paying him 18 million if he accepts. Middling in my mind is guys on the back end of the org top 30 list. Literally no other team needs a 1st baseman and Duda is going to walk at years end. If the Mets don’t want that deal, life goes on.
hojostache
The Mets aren’t making the playoffs with Duda, but the Yankees aren’t either. The Yankees lack the starters and have a black hole at 1B. Duda is worth a solid mid-prospect and 1-2 lotto tickets bc the Yankees need Duda more than any other team. Short porch, avg to a bit above avg glove (have you seen the horrible throws that come at him every game?!), and a proven track record of performing in NYC.
MurderersRow27
2 months of Duda is definitely not worth a top 10 prospect and another prospect in the 20-30 range…
hojostache
Yankee stats for 1B who play in a bandbox:
.216 / .301 / .402 / .703
28th in MLB
Duda who plays in cavernous CitiField:
.246 / .348 / .547 / .895
8th in MLB
There isn’t a big market for 1B, but the Yankees are in desperate need of one. All it takes is one desperate team. Duda is a proven 1B who already has shown an ability to play under the bright lights of NYC. None of the other 1B options have done that yet.
thegreatcerealfamine
jerseyjohn I definitely concur. Duda is worth Refsnyder and two very low level mean nothing prospects. Please no one take Sherman seriously!
BoldyMinnesota
Refsnyder plus two nothing prospects does not get Duda. That means you think Duda has no value considering that package has zero value.
thegreatcerealfamine
Pretty much. Given his propensity for injuries and the platoon the Yankees now employ will probably equal or outperform his production.
chris5
He regularly has a wRC+ of over 130. He pulls the ball with loft and at a higher average exit velocity than the rest of the league. His offensive profile is literally perfect for yankee stadium.
Wildboyz
Sherman is a hack, but out of his 6 trade proposals in the NY Post today.
The Duda trade was the only one that made any sense. Refsnyder, Austin and a few blocked RP is not a bad deal.
Much better than his Jay Bruce for an injured Nate Karns deal. Haha
ExileInLA 2
Or his CLE trade. If the Mets trade w CLE, it should be all-in (Bruce + Walker) for Greg Allen to play CF in NY.
Cardinals17
Absolutely correct!! When The Mets were trying to market Duda a year ago, they had no takers.
chris5
When were they trying to market Duda last year? He was hurt last season. And they were still trying to compete.
Geekburt
No way would the yanks consider this deal .
Duda strikes out way too often and is a butcher at first base …remember the world series a few years ago??? Mets would love to get rid of him but no one should take him for anything close to decent prospects . Refsynder and Mason Williams and a low level prospect . Purely a salary dump for Mets who weren’t going to resign him anyway .
kingjenrry
You might be thinking of somebody else. Duda is a solid first baseman with good hands and his strikeout rate isn’t bad at all considering his power.
barry2
Red Soxes thought about Nick Castellanos?. He will become 30Hr 100 RBIs guy but that not his problem. He would cost a lot but players name later such as Tanner Houck and Alex Scherff. Scherff was the steal of the draft.
prestonb1291
Red Soxes
barry2
Right, fail to mention that Nick would not get moved until Tigers know what their return will be for Wilson and Alex.
Larry David's Joe Pepitone Jersey
Four major league ready players for Duda is far-fetched to me, even if they’re not legitimate prospects.
RangersFanCD19
The Rangers won’t trade Beltre…
TheGreatTwigog
Stanton for Cargo (to offput salary and create space) and a prospect or two. I know it’ll never happen but I can dream
halos101
rockies cannot have stantons contract i would think. Save the money to resign arenado
imametsfanbut
If the Marlins would eat 1/2 Giancarlo’s salary, they should trade him to the Rockies for CarGo. That would be a feasible answer.
He would be a record setting beast in Coors and that lineup would be downright frightening. Bryce and Mannys upcoming contracts should be over 400mm making Giancarlo look like a bargain.
stymeedone
Why would the Marlins want Cargo? That looks like a very Rockies sided deal.
jonscriff
Not to be a bum but i’m fine with the headly/Cooper at first , headly is on fire now and i think they just need a starting pitcher , not everyone in your lineup should be hitting .300 , someone’s gotta get out somehow
jerseyjohn
I am fine with the 1st platoon as well. If Duda or another rental is available for a reasonable cost go for it, if not fine with what we have. As you state offense isn’t the real weakness of the team anyhow.
agerst1574
Duda is not coming back unless the Mets trade Smith which some folks in the Mets Blogosphere think is a possibility due to his lack of power. He reminds me a lot of John Olereud and I would take that. I thought Sherman’s article was well thought out and I also thought about the possibility of Refsnyder coming to the Mets given that he was designated for assignment.
kingjenrry
For what it’s worth, Olerud was 6’5″ and Smith is 5’11” but listed at 6′. I like Smith plenty but Olerud was one of the finest offensive players to ever put on a Mets uniform.
Waspybud
What would it cost the Red Sox to acquire Jedd Gyorko?
Bullet
……a clue….. He’s club control until 2020 and they’re still in it.
everlastingdave
I’ve been worried for months that Dave Stewart was gonna wind up in charge of baseball ops for the Marlins. This is a relief.
thegreatcerealfamine
Are you a Marlins fan?
everlastingdave
Born and raised White Sox, Marlins have been my NL team for as long as I’ve cared enough to have one, so a year or two pre-Loria.
madmc44
The Sox could have solved the 3 B situation in Spring Training by making Betts a 3 B just like they moved him from 2 B to RF. It isn’t too late to make that change.
It’s also not too late to trade someone like Bogaerts for a true 3 B like Castellnos, a tough Lefty like Justin Wilson and insert Marrero and Lin to play SS. This may sound crazy but the Sox have to start thinking down the Road bit until they have to start paying these “Killer B’s” that will be demanding $100 M + contracts.
Chris Young or Bryce Brentz could play LF with Benentendi going to the. larger area at Fenway in RF
Bruin1012
You are right that proposal is crazy. The Red Sox have Devers coming why would they move Betts to third base a position he has never played when he is the best defensive right fielder in the game at this point. It makes no sense the Red Sox just need to see if they can add someone like Nunez and if not call up Devers in August. Devers will be up in September for sure when roosters expand maybe he will be called up a little earlier.
lucienbel
There’s absolutely no reason to move Betts to third with the defense and success he’s had in right. Furthermore, you suggest sticking in platoon quality players in left, which would turn left field into the same problem third base currently is. Difference? Mookie is comfy in the outfield and plays an incredibly high level defense there already.
Why screw around with everyones comfort level just to end up with the same problem in left field instead of third base?
daviebatz
Sherman suggests the yanks giving the mets Frazier and 3 other prospects. Lol while I’m a die-hard met fan even I laughed at that. But if yanks are that dumb which I often argue I’ll take it.
jdgoat
Wait what? He didn’t propose Frazier. It was all fringe players who are more low ceiling guys
Geekburt
Maybe he meant Todd Frazier …let’s hope so
MB923
Lmao. Heyman and Bowden are arguing on Twitter about the Stanton/Yankees rumors. Heyman sticking with what he said. Bowden saying it’s all false.
Michael Chaney
Sherman suggested Asdrubal Cabrera to the Indians for Yandy Diaz, which would be a vast overpay for the Indians. That kinda killed the rest of the article for me.
GMB 883
If the Red Sox got Bautista it would not be to play 3B. It would be to DH while Hanley plays first and either Holt or Marrero plays third. Maybe Moreland plays first against some righties. They switch it up. With Hanley now playing some 1B the Sox can broaden their search to some power hitters who DH vs just looking for 3B.
rmullig2
The Red Sox ownership should dig deep into their pockets and make the commitment this year. Dombrowski has put them into a position where they have to win in the next three years due to his depletion of the farm system. They should look to the Marlins and get in on their fire sale:
Sox get Stanton, Prado, Chen, Ziegler
Marlins get Benintendi, E-Rod, Workman, Groome, Lin, 2 lower level minor league relievers
champions67
And how high do you need dombrowski to be to accept that?
Bruin1012
That trade is so funny it’s laughable. Basically Stanton terrible contract Prado not a good contract Ziegler been bad this year and Chen completely worthless for 6 years of Benintendi, 5 years of Erod, Workman who is cheap Groome and Lin plus two others this makes laugh so hard as Red Sox fan DD would have a stroke laughing so hard. Basically the Hershel Walker trade only worse.
rmullig2
Stanton is the second best home run hitter in all of baseball. The Sox are the worst home run hitting team in the American League. I know the other contracts are bad but you can’t get a superstar without either giving up a boatload of top prospects (which they don’t have anymore) or taking on some dead money.
Herschel Walker was already on the downside of his career when he was traded. Stanton is in his prime. Prado is a clear upgrade over what they have at first base now and can take over Chris Young’s role next year. Ziegler and Chen have upside even though they are overpaid.
Bottom line is that if the Red Soz are all-in then they need to add power to the lineup. This deal gets them there while also letting them hold onto Devers.
Bruin1012
But loose Benintendi not chance let’s just look at from a war prospective Stanton is maybe a 5 War guy which means he has negative value with his contract he isn’t worth anything really and you are arguing a league minimum guy that is consecutively a 2-3 war player with huge excess value and zeros who has huge excess value not mention Groome it would be the worst trade in decades. It is so bad I’m thinking you are trolling.
Bruin1012
“Conservatively”
Bruin1012
Honestly I’m really trying to figure out if you are serious or just trolling.
Bruin1012
So this trade proposal is take all of our bad contracts let’s us get a reset oh and buy the way give us a ton of extremely valuable young major leaguers and prospects just trying to see if I got this straight.
gomerhodge71
Beltre would put Boston over the top. I hugely doubt he would balk at a chance to go back to Fenway. The problem is what the Sox would have to give up for him. Not sure that surrendering more prospects AND taking on Beltre’s salary would be wise.
fixshorts
4 major league ready players for Duda, has to be a joke there somewhere. Tell the Mets we will give them Refsnyder straight up..lol.. We worked so hard building our farm up and we are going to tear it down for Duda, we aren’t that desperate.
hojostache
The stats say otherwise.
See above.
JVthemetsfan
Maybe so but your still a 500 team lol.Better get some pitching unless your Judge can pitch.
