As things stand right now, the Rangers are leaning against dealing star righty Yu Darvish, according to MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan. That could still change with an “overwhelming” offer or a total collapse in the standings, he notes. There’s still no clarity in the American League Wild Card picture, and the Rangers remain as plausible a contender as any, so perhaps the smoke surrounding Darvish really has come from an extinguished flame. That storyline promises to be among the most notable of the coming week, not least of which because of interest from the suddenly Clayton Kershaw-less Dodgers. Los Angeles seems to be taking something of a Darvish-or-bust stance with regard to starters, Joel Sherman of the New York Post suggests in a tweet.
More deadline chatter:
- The Brewers are “fading” in the race to acquire Athletics righty Sonny Gray, according to Ken Rosenthal of MLB Network (via Twitter). It’s not clear whether that’s owing to a change in Milwaukee’s position or the rise of an alternative suitor, but it’s obviously notable. The Brewers seem well-positioned to add a pitcher such as Gray, though perhaps other organizations have greater motivation to boost their near-term product. One such team is the Yankees, who believe they are better than their record, Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes. That view has helped spur the team’s deadline activity, including its effort to get a starter — with Gray perhaps representing the best fit.
- We continue to hear of widespread interest in Phillies reliever Pat Neshek, though it remains unclear just how much he’ll draw in return. A few teams still looking hard at him are the Nationals, Dodgers, and Red Sox, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (via Twitter). Those three clubs are among several that seem to be looking over a variety of relief pitchers, of course.
- The Mets believe internally that they will end up trading infielder Asdrubal Cabrera, Mike Puma of the New York Post writes in an update on the team’s deadline situation. That seemingly reflects not only the fairly robust demand, but also the team’s assessment of its interest (or lack thereof) in bringing Cabrera back for 2018 through a club option. Aside from Cabrera and top trade piece Addison Reed, the Mets are said to be receiving middling interest in their pending free agents — despite the fact that all are playing rather well. Puma notes that lofty salaries would make all of the team’s other major trade candidates (Lucas Duda, Jay Bruce, Curtis Granderson, and Neil Walker) plausible August trade pieces.
- In Marlins injury news, the club announced that first baseman Justin Bour left today’s game with an oblique strain, as Tim Healey of the Sun Sentinel reports. While nothing is official as of yet, skipper Don Mattingly said it’s expected that Bour will require a DL stint. Meanwhile, righty Edinson Volquez did not have an encouraging throwing session today, Tim Healey of the Sun Sentinel tweets. As the veteran heads for a second opinion on his ailing knee, it seems that he’ll remain out a while longer. These two players, then, seem quite unlikely to factor into deadline talks — though that was unlikely in any event.
- The likeliest scenario at this point is that the Tigers will try to move second baseman Ian Kinsler over the offseason –after exercising his option for 2018 — Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press tweets. Likewise, the Yankees will probably look to see if there’s a taker for outfielder Jacoby Ellsburgy this winter, Feinsand tweets. That’s not terribly surprising in either case, though surely there’d seem to be greater odds that Kinsler could end up on the move — and indeed he may yet.
Dodgers13
Dodgers should go for Gray, possibly better and probably not as high as a price as darvish, and gray isn’t a rental like darvish either.
Dodgers13
Possibly a better fit**

Gray will definitely cost more than Darvish.

Yep, whoever thinks 2 months of Darvish is going to cost more than 2 seasons and 2 months years of Gray is clueless all right.
YankeeMan3099
Dodgers dont need Gray stupid move they panick when Kershaw goes down no one is catching them in the western division.
YankeeMan3099
Dodgers will get Darvish I just read that the Rangers said they would trade him for the right deal that’s who I think the Dodgers get instead.
MB923
Oh…okay.
chitownmvp01
Are you kidding? Gray is controllable and on a great contract. Dodgers currently have 3 starters (Ryu, Hill, and McCarthy) who struggle to stay healthy. Maeda is inconsistent. Dodgers have nothing reliable behind Kershaw and Wood.

And the bulk of that 19 loss against 9 win record came in the disastrous bullpen meltdown they have recently experienced.

I never said Boston’s bullpen was weak. Just saying ERA is not the only pitching stat.

You mean “that rotation” that ranks 7th in WAR, 10th in ERA, 7th in K/9, 4th best BB/9, 4th in K/BB ratio, 9th in FIP, 6th in xFIP, and 7th in WHIP?
These are MLB ranks by the way, not AL ranks. I think it’s very fair to say the Yankees rotation this year has been among the top 10 in baseball with them being in top 10 in most major standard and advanced stats.
Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.

thegreatcerealfamine
By your reasoning they’re fine.
NYfan0043
Why on earth would you trade flint Frazier, he’s been playing decent and producing where he gets a chance. Why give him up for a pitcher who has been plagued with injuries and hasn’t had an above average season in a while. The Yankees are clearly rebuilding so keeping Torres, Frazier and as many other young prospects should he their strategy. If they were one move away from being a World Series team then I would maybe entertain the idea but right now find a cheap option that can help make a playoff push and let the team play

Kinda unsure about a Darvish trade. Texas isn’t exactly trying to get rid of him, which means they are going to ask for more than he’s worth. Also, just having him for a few months while trading top prospects for him seems already like a bad idea. Maybe they should go after a closer or two and keep testing the waters with Strippling. Kid’s doing good so far and it’s not like we are short on starters. Kersh will be back soon and Wood has been on fire all season. Hill is turning things around and same with Maeda. (He needs to work on his pitch count.) This is our last year with Dre and I think Gonzo will retire too. Plus a lot of contracts are ending this year so lots of club openings for some of the young blood knocking on the door. I think it’s probably smart to walk away from these big name starters and go for the relievers rather than depend on Jansen all playoffs again like last year.
dodgerfan711
They need a left handed reliever more than anything. Awful depth at that position. They have a solid pen from the righr side that wont need to rely on jansen to get more than 4 out saves in october
BlueSkyLA
But hey they promoted Edward Paredes and he made his MLB debut today, after 12 years in the minors. Problem solved!
Actually, he pitched well, but still.
thegreatcerealfamine
How soon will Kershaw be back? That’s the big question!
RangersFanCD19
Apparently 4-6 weeks
tarheels23
Dodgers are in win mode now our starters are not good enough to win world series need right handed starter sonny Gray would be a great fit.if we don do something we will go out in first or second round like we do every year

Wasn’t there another rumor going around that the Brewers will fold and put Brinson on the table on the deadline day? I’m guessing this “fading” is all a part of that.
Really hope Beane doesn’t trade him before the deadline though, teams are going to blink and that’s when he can swoop in and get a top 10 overall prospect for Gray.
RangersFanCD19
We want Lewis Brinson back (traded him to MIL last year in the Lucroy deal)
11Bravo
Never heard anything about Brinson being on the table. Pretty sure they don’t want to give up Brinson or Hader at this point
BoldyMinnesota
If the Rangers dont trade Darvish, miss the playoffs, and cant resign him, GMJD should almost certainly be fired. This is a year they could restock their future after trading a lot of their young guys away, but if they miss the playoffs and lose Darvish, Lucroy, and Gomez for nothing, theyre screwed
A'sfaninUK
But but but, Elvis wants them to drain the farm and buy!
madmanTX
And…you’re wrong and don’t know how much the Rangers value JD. They won’t fire him for trying to keep Darvish and losing him to another team. Wow. Just dumb.
BoldyMinnesota
How on earth is a mediocre team who depleted their minor league system dumb by selling off rentals?
goat
Rangers should dump and run. Get rid of Darvish, Lucroy, Gomez and restock the farms. Even if they make it to the wild card, that bullpen will blow it. That streaky hitting will blow it. That sometimey starting will blow it.
A'sfaninUK
The Rangers contention window is closing this year, so I can see why they’re stuck with not dealing for prospects because technically they can still contend and would have Darvish & Hamels in the postseason. But smart move would be to sell everyone over 30.
asuchrisc
Totally agree. Not a Rangers fan, but their depth is terrible. If you don’t think you can win a WS, then jump at the opportunity to reload.
mdwilson74
I am a Rangers fan and I’ve been trying to convince fellow Rangers fans if this very thing. Now is the best time to reload since on paper the Astros should dominate this division for the next 4-5 years. Reload/rebuild now and aim for being competitive again when the new ballpark opens in 2020.

Nice strategy, but selling low is as dumb as can be. Glad you’re not JD.
CursedRangers
I’m a big time Rangers fan and totally agree that they should go in full sale mode. The Rangers farm has been wiped out from all the World Series runs (no rings to show for it, but it was a blast while it lasted). Here are the players that could make sense to trade:
Darvish
Napoli (potential bench player with strong leadership traits and great playoff experience)
Hamels
Lucroy
Carlos Gomez
Matt Bush
Andrew Cashner
The Rangers are a .500 team at best. They are not built to beat the Astros, Red Sox, Nationals, Dodgers, etc…
therealbdavis
They would love to dump these guys. Except no one wants them for the prices they’re asking for them. Would you trade your top prospect for struggling starters/ok position players for the hopes they play like their all star years? Neither will anyone else. Teams like LA can just wait until the end of the year, keep all of their prospects, and sign guys like Darvish with their giant wallets. Texas should write off this year, try to dump it to krumpit with all these giant contracts and rebuild. I agree but they can’t do that by the asking prices they are asking for. Not going to happen.
Also I doubt Sonny Gray, as much as I value him myself, would be a good fit. LA does need a better Right handed starter in the pen. Kinda wished Greinke stayed because problem avoided. However, Gray is injury prone and not that reliable like he was 2-3 years ago. Will he be the same ace working with Honeycutt or will he flop and we lost top prospects for another failed playoff run? I kinda feel bad for the Dodgers office because they have to make these decisions knowing LA fans are sick of watching them go to the playoffs so frequently with no success.
tac3
What do you think about the Hamels deal that was available a few years ago? I think the management should’ve pulled the trigger. Big mistep on their part. Yeah, it would’ve hurt to lose pederson or Seager, but as hindsight is showing, Urais … not so much. You’d have hamels and kershaw. you happy that deal never went through? The dodgers would have fired kershaw, grienke, and Hamels in the playoffs back then. Help kershaw get over his then postseason jitters. Curious what LA fans think now that it is further in the rear view
Aril
Could be the same thing Dodgers lose in playoff for the offense, with 2 hits in 2 nlcs elimination game6 you cant win, we lose a lot of games by 1 run, the only lose of Seager could make a great hole in dodgers lineup, and joc hit a hr of Scherzer, Philly wanted Seager, Pederson Urias for Hammels
swartnp7
I know it isn’t their MO, but…
Pirates go for Yu. They
trade Kevin Newman, Will Craig, (2 of their top 10) and Nick Kingham for Yu Darvish.
Rotation of Yu, Cole, JT, and Nova would be tough.
Push Kuhl to pen. Have him, Watson, Nicasio, and Rivero.
That rotation vs 19 games vs sub-500 teams could take the division.
Get to playoffs where pitching wins and they can get by w/o Marte (though a trade for an OF would be cool).
Robertowannabe
Sports talk radio in Pittsburgh is insane. They are now talking how it would be perfect if the Pirates would trade to get Neil Walker back. He would fit like a glove. They go on to say that it will never happen because the Pirates will never admit their mistake. Some mistake. Yes, when healthy, Neil can hit. only problem is, he can’t stay healthy anymore. Could just hear the crying if they did extend him or paid his qualifying offer and they were paying him 17mil to not play. The trade(s) involving Walker did not work for the Pirates. Niese hurt his knee and went down the tubes and flipped him for Bastardo and he is done too. Pretty much a push with less money being paid by the Pirates in the whole deal.
hojostache
Sold!
The Mets need to have a fire sale.

I could see where the Mets would love to trade Walker back to the Bucs. Hope the Bucs are not that stupid

Dodgers should deal Urias and another prospect or two for Fulmer. They’d be dealing perhaps the top pitching prospect in baseball, who most believed was untouchable before injury, for help this year without simply renting a player. In Fulmer, of course, they’d be acquiring a young star pitcher in his own right. Spoke with a Padres scout about Urias a couple weeks ago and he said Urias’ surgery was far more involved than what’s been reported and he’s not too optimistic about the ultimate outcome.
Sibert18
Lol? Not gunna happen
hojostache
Fulmer is a stud and will be nearly untouchable.
RangersFanCD19
I don’t think you’re getting Fulmer, bud…from a non-dodgers or tigers fan
Bruin1012
Well if that’s the case then why would the Tigers trade Fulmer for that uncertainty.
leftcoaster
I’m not saying such a deal would happen, just that it’s the type deal id pursue if I were calling the shots for the Dodgers. A package including Urias, Alvarez and Lux would certainly be interesting to a rebuilding team. Trading top prospects for a player you’ll get 3 months use out of is ridiculous in my opinion. If all the planets align and the deal cements a championship it’d be worth it, but more times than not such a trade bites you in the a..
tbonenats
No one is trading a stud young controllable pitcher for Urias. Tigers would ask for Verdugo and Buehler and Alvarez and probably more
jsaldi
LA needs to get Darvish. They have the money to then sign him long term.
leftcoaster
With the exception of the Josh Hill trade the Dodgers current brass have been very reluctant to part with top prospects for rental pieces. I’d be very surprised if they give away their favorite shiny toys this year to borrow a player for a few months. I could see Calhoun (because he can’t catch) and/or Alvarez (because he hasn’t a clue how to locate his pitches) moving, but Buehler and Verdugo aren’t packing their bags for any destination other than Chavez Ravine.

I’m thinking Verlander ends up in LA. Feels like it’s almost inevitable.
oldleftylong
The Dodgers would be wise to make it happen. The Cubbies are scouting JV, too. I think he helps one of the two win the WS. Lots of playoff experience.
BlueSkyLA
Only if they can’t get Darvish. Clearly Verlander is the runner-up prize, the one you live with when you can’t get the one you really wanted.
socalblake
As Verlander is clearly past his glory days, it would be interesting to see what Honeycutt could do with him.
leftcoaster
I wouldn’t absorb Verlander’s contract. Albatross written all over it considering his age and regression.
tsc32
Personally believe we’re just kidding ourselves by thinking we shouldn’t sell. We aren’t going to win this year and will lose a ton of trade assets after the year. JD should sell and rebuild some of the farm he destroyed over the past few seasons.

Seattle, Twins and Dodgers talking to the Mets. Must be for Reed? 2 team showing interest in Bruce. Don’t know which teams but if anyone has heard anything. Please share.
