Orioles right-hander Brad Brach may be receiving more trade interest than closer Zach Britton, as there is “heavy traffic on” Brach’s services, MASNsports.com’s Roch Kubatko reports. Brach would come at a lower prospect cost than Britton, hence the larger degree of interest. Both pitchers have one year of arbitration eligibility left, with Brach ($3.05MM this season) on pace for a much lower salary than Britton ($11.4MM) even though Brach has pitched very well as Baltimore’s interim closer while Britton has spent much of the year on the DL. Brach already drew a lot of looks in the offseason and may be even more popular now that teams know they can potentially use him as a closer as well as a setup man.
Here’s more from the AL East…
- The Red Sox have placed two relievers on the 10-day DL in as many days, with Joe Kelly sidelined with a left hamstring strain yesterday and veteran righty Blaine Boyer announced this morning as suffering from a right elbow strain. The hard-throwing Kelly has a 1.49 ERA over 36 1/3 relief innings for the Sox this season, with peripheral stats indicating some good fortune (.228 BABIP, 88.1% strand rate) to go along with Kelly’s 54.9% grounder rate. Boyer, meanwhile, has a 3.00 ERA, 7.5 K/9 and 3.33 K/BB rate over 24 innings after signing a minor league deal with Boston in April. The Red Sox were already rumored to be looking for relief help at the deadline, and it’s likely that the search will intensify after losing two bullpen arms.
- The Rays asked the Marlins about relief pitching when the two sides were negotiating the Adeiny Hechavarria trade last month, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times writes. With the Rays looking for bullpen help and Miami seemingly open to moving any veteran player, it seems that the two sides are likely to re-open talks as we approach the deadline.
- Also from Topkin, he reports that one team (not necessarily the Marlins) asked the Rays for both Brent Honeywell and Willy Adames in exploratory discussions about relievers. Needless to say, it would be a big surprise if either top prospect was actually dealt, though it gives an example of the high price tag that teams are placing on top-shelf relief pitching at the deadline.
- The Cubs checked in on Chris Archer and Marcus Stroman during their wide-ranging search for young and controllable pitching, Peter Gammons of GammonsDaily.com writes. Archer has long been linked to Chicago in trade rumors, though the most recent talks unsurprisingly went nowhere since the Rays want to keep their ace to make a playoff run. As for Stroman, the Blue Jays informed the Cubs that the 26-year-old righty would cost Chicago a player from its big league roster. As MLBTR’s Steve Adams recently observed in his “Taking Inventory” analysis on the Jays, Stroman probably isn’t a likely trade candidate unless Toronto decides to embark on a total rebuild. The Cubs, of course, acquired Jose Quintana earlier this week and are reportedly still on the lookout to add another controllable arm to their rotation.
Would most likely cost a Javy or Addison for Stro
Depending on who the other pieces are, I’m not totally against that. Happ has taken over the jack of all trades position. Zo still is that also. Baez may break out one day. But IMO, he still strikes out, swings for fences too much, and doesn’t make the easier plays in the field. He’s gifted. Yes. But he’s still too flawed as an every day guy
Baez’s problem isn’t gong to be fixed. He’s been up at the major league level for far too long, and he’s still doing the same exact thing. It’s just an instinct/snap reaction issue. He just likes swinging for the fences and high fastballs. The problem is, he can’t hit them. He’s just not a smart/situational hitter, isn’t clutch, and is extremely inconsistent. I know he has the look, the occasional flash, and the swagger, but I would move him, if I were the Cubs. He (and maybe a solid prospect) would fetch them the pitching they need. Happ is a far more consistent, and intelligent, hitter.
He thinks he is Roberto Clemente sure he shines brute but routinely he is average. With star Quality. He would be ok to trade but Addy makes hard contact and makes the routine plays and jazzy ones to.
Roberto Clemente was one of the greatest. Maybe compare him to Mike Trout.
D.Jones You must think like me because while Baez gets a ton of love for his unbelievable glove he looks lost at the plate 90% of the time. It’s obvious he can’t judge a breaking ball from a fastball and looks lost most of the time guessing. I know there will be a bunch of unhappy fans if he’s moved but Theo knows his value is at its maximum and I could see he being moved in a package for Archer in the off season.
JAVIER BAEZ = CORY PATTERSON……
Though it pains me to say it, I totally agree. I really love watching Javy play, but sometimes it hurts watching those free-wheelin’ cuts he takes. I’d be fine with shipping him to Toronto for Stro.
I would be willing to trade Russell for Stroman…both players are having up & down years..both are good players.no doubt..but would wait to see if price for Gray good down first
Not Schwarber? Or Happ? Or Almora? Seriously. You act like you KNOW the two they’ve narrowed it down to.
If the package is centered around Schwarber or Almora, I imagine Toronto hangs up.
Stro won’t have a lengthy career as a 5’8″ starting pitcher. Jays really should trade him for whatever they can get while his value is high.
Reminds me of lincecum frame back in 08-09 was elite and just fell off a cliff
They’re both overrated in a big way, so that’s not a big price to pay.
Neither are available. Both are top.10 at their positions. If you want one of them. The jays better give back stroman and Osuna. Stroman and Ozuna for Candelario and maybe someone from the ML roster. Unless it’s a spectacular offer. No one from the 25 man roster is getting offered. Candelario and Schwarber for Stroman and Osuna and maybe a 3rd player to the cubs.
That is a laughable trade suggestion. No GM in his right mind is going to trade Stroman and Osuna for Cadelario and Schwarber.
Delusional
If it’s only Russell I make that trade yesterday
With the Jays expressing that they need a player from the Cubs’ MLB roster, it seems like Schwarber would be a natural fit for Stroman. Also would allow the Cubs to hold onto to their remaining top line prospects.
Schwarber doesn’t have the value he had last year.
Please stop acting like Schwarber can fetch anything of significance one for one!
I did not say one for one. I only stated they shouldn’t have to deal remaining top line prospects. It would surely take more than him. And for the record, I do not overrate him. I think he is a bum, but he is built for the AL.
That’s pretty much the way you worded it. Stroman would take Schwarber plus an additional current positional player and prospects to get it done.
Wright or wrong, rumour has it the Jays asked the Cubs for Zobrist and Lackey plus two top prospects when they asked about Stroman. Don’t ask me why they asked for this package, I am just relaying the info that was shared with me which is normally a very accurate source.
The Jays would have a mutiny from their fans if they asked and accepted that package. Where did you get your info?
My first thought of why were the Jays/Cubs talking about this package because the Jays want to compete this year as well as perhaps “buy” some top prospects as well by taking on salary.
Look, Schwarber got off to a hot start before getting hurt. Because of that, expectations were incredibly high for Schwarber. Fans tend to overreact to every slump or setback. People who understand the game, however, look at overall body of work when they evaluate players. In that regard, Schwarber projects as a power hitting DH. Getting him out of the limelight of Wrigely and sending him to Toronto or Detroit would be beneficial. The Cubs really don’t have the time (win now) and roster space to develop him properly.
Detroit already has a DH, who is not moveable. Not a good fit for Schwarber.
You’re right, on most accounts, but he can still be a performer with the Cubs. His defense, according to metrics, really isn’t bad.
Most fans, as you alluded to, are just morons. They think perfection is the norm, and that slumps don’t happen. Schwarber is a great hitter, but he’s in an extreme slump, and it just got in his head.
He will work himself out of it, and is showing signs of life. Injuries can really mess with a rookies development, and expectations were sky high for him.
Add in the expectations of Sunday Cubs “fans” (people that never played and don’t truly understand baseball), and of course it’s going to be a pressure cooker.
He’ll be fine with the Cubs. Just takes time.
Well said DJones
Why Frazier is not a Redsox now??we need him + the Yanks m take him !!!
He sucks, we should just focus on relief
Wrong. 3B is a major need and Frazier has a higher wRC+ than Betts, Bradley Jr, Bogaerts, Pedroia, and Benintendi over the past 12 weeks.
Lin is playing well, marrero has improved and holt is back, i would still like frazier, but they don’t need him as much now
Lin..you’ve got to be joking. The Yanks have played the Sox tough all weekend and should be 2-0. This with Judge slumping and the BP. The Sox need his power bat, because you can’t count on lackadaisical Hanley,Shaw,or for that matter Holt.
Shaw??
Well technically they can’t count on Shaw. That’d be the Brewers, who weren’t counting on him to be one of the best run producers in the league but he is lol.
Sorry meant Sam Travis.
Lin isnt even overachieving at this point and Holt is held in high regard for what reason again? He hasnt done anything in quite some.time, and when he did it was average at best. oh…the pinkys loved him. Third base is tripe and will continue to be. Devers is the faint flicker of hope.
The Red Sox have made it perfectly clear that there is absolutely NO WAY they would ever bring a player up from A Ball to play 3B in the SHOW! … oh wait, is t that what they did with Lin? And forget about Devers, 3B belongs to Michael Chavis!?!?
They didn’t bring Lin up from A ball he was in AA for the last two years and he is older. Devers is just 20 years old and now in AAA he will be up some time this year. Devers is the future at third. Chavis probably won’t be with the Red Sox after the trade deadline.
I’m sure you meant Travis but you do realize Travis is a first baseman not third base never has been.
Was talking of hitting..Travis can be used at DH possibly. My first post should of said Shaw is missed, but who would of predicted Thornburg’s predicament.
Nobody wants frazier, he has a horrible AVG just hits a lot of HR
Frazier is bad he gets on home run hot streaks for 2 weeks at a time then goes cold for a whole month. He will get exposed in the playoffs.
wRC+ who are you Brian Kenny. Just use the eyeball test! You are saying Betts and Boegarts and Benitendi are worse hitters than Frazier. I get you said over the last 12 weeks but there is the small sample size of Frazier going off for a short period of time.
“just use the eyeball test” is a pretty flawed way to evaluate hitters
Its not flawed at all. If you cant see right away that Frazier is not even close then thats in you
Teheran to the Cubs for Caratini & Candelerio
As much as I love Caratini for our backup catcher position, Is take that trade in a heartbeat.
Not enough in return
Not even close to worth it. No reason to move him for anything less than a steal, no brainer type trade. That is not an example of one
Doubt the braves take that deal. Theyd be selling low on teheran whos controllable till 2021.
Plus dont the braves expect to compete in 2018? If thats the case doubt he’s even on the market.
Sox are fine either way and last week Vegas had their odds to win the WS at 3rd best with no one else close. Dodgers, Astros, Red Sox. When your pitching staff is Sale, Price, Porcello, Pomoranz and Rodriquez that’s tough to match up. Plus Brian Johnson is pitching well in AAA. Speaking of AAA, 3rd baseman Rafael Devers in his first day with the PawSox yesterday went 4 for 4 with a HR and made an incredible play defensively. Frazier will help but he is not a necessity. AL East is not that good.
Lots of baseball left to play and a lot can still happen.
I pray to the baseball gods right now please dont have Frazier come to the Sox
I can see the Braves trading Swanson and a package around young pitching for Stroman. Especially since Camargo has went off if not him Albies for sure
I’d ship Stroman in the right deal. Acquire two every day bats, totally agree with the ask for present major leaguer plus a blue chipper, and consider it done – Pat Gillick 101.
Brach has been healthy and exceptional in filling in for Britton as the O’s closer. He is also on a much lower salary this year and next, so the prospect cost would only be marginally lower. Don’t know if it was Kubatcko who said that or Polishuk, but either way it’s wrong.
Frazier would be fine for the right cost… like a Henry Owens, Valaquez or Trey Ball type only but dont give up an Ockimey or Beeks
