Here are highlights of the latest notes column from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
- Some teams pursued free agents last winter with the idea that the new CBA would allow them to have 26-man rosters in 2017. That plan, along with a related move to reduce September roster expansion to 28 players, did not wind up in the CBA, but owners and the union are open-minded to the possibility of revising it next winter, although such a change to the current CBA would likely only take place along with the addition of pace-of-play rules.
- It would make sense for the Cardinals to discuss a trade with the Marlins involving outfielder Marcell Ozuna, Rosenthal writes. The Cardinals would get a middle-of-the-order hitter who is controllable through 2019. The Marlins, meanwhile, want to add prospects and it’s doubtful they can extend Ozuna, who is represented by Scott Boras. (Rosenthal recently reported that the Marlins would consider trading Ozuna.) Rosenthal also argues that the Marlins’ best path forward right now is to rebuild. Past attempts to win now have resulted in the team giving up too many small pieces of their future (including players like Andrew Heaney and Josh Naylor) in recent trades.
- Top Yankees infield prospect Gleyber Torres has limited experience in the high minors, but he might be promoted to replace Chase Headley (who’s batting just .228/.300/.348 over 203 plate appearances this season) at third base in the near future, since the first-place Yankees could see Torres as a better option than dealing prospects to acquire a veteran third baseman.
- Outfielder Howie Kendrick and reliever Pat Neshek have performed well for the Phillies this season and could provide the team with good trade value, perhaps along with Joaquin Benoit, once Benoit returns from a DL stint caused by a knee strain.
- A source tells Rosenthal the Orioles want lefty relief help, although he notes that Double-A lefty Tanner Scott could become an option at some point. Scott, a sixth-round pick in 2014, has a 1.64 ERA and 11.7 K/9 in 33 innings thus far this season, although he might need to work on his 6.0 BB/9 so far before making it to the Majors. The O’s currently have Donnie Hart and Richard Bleier pitching as lefties out of their bullpen; another lefty reliever, Zach Britton, is out for an extended period with a forearm strain, although he doesn’t pitch in a typical lefty role anyway.

Come on Mozeliak make this happen. I agree this would be a win for both the Cardinals and Marlins.
cardsfan1988
It’s all about what we would have to surrender in a deal…bc it won’t be cheap especially with ozuna off to a hot start
CompanyAssassin
My problem with it is the amount of outfielders we already have. I suppose Pham/Martinez are the first to get ousted but they both have been playing well.
willi
Cardinals will not be able to keep Ozuna, so giving up two or three Type “A “Prospects is not worth it !
Dynasty
I still don’t get why we would trade for some mediocre 3B to replace Headley, who in all likelihood would be mediocre if we just let him play through this rut, when we have Torres, Andujar, and most importantly, Tyler Wade. Andujar is still in the lower levels and Torres is brand new to AAA and having a bit of a challenge adjusting for the moment (nothing to be concerned about of course)…so I can understand if those weren’t convincing internal replacements. But Tyler Wade is literally supposed to be the Yankees Ben Zobrist. He’s killing it at AAA almost as much as Dustin Fowler. He’s your guy to fill in, if anything. But if not him, then Torres and Andujar are both better choices than acquiring another Headley who will cost us prospects.
thegreatcerealfamine
I totally agree with you on Wade and not dealing prospects. They definitely need to cut ties with Refsnyder after Bird returns, and bring up Fowler to fill into the outfield..because Headley is starting his annual slide.
gc1998
I think Refsnyder will be part of a trade package at some point. He doesn’t have the talent on either offense or defense to unseat anyone but the temporary Chris Carter. When the right deal comes along I’m sure we will see him move. He isn’t going to lure anyone better alone, but packaged with a higher level prospect or two he could sweeten the pot for an upgrade middle reliever or starting pitcher.
Dynasty
My post was to thegreatcerealfamine in case anyone cared.
Dynasty
I agree with everything you said except bringing up Fowler. That’s not because I don’t think he’s ready…he clearly is. It’s because we literally have no room for him. We have 3 OF spots and 6 ready OFers (Judge, Gardner, Ellsbury, Hicks, Frazier, Fowler). I thought for sure Gardner was a goner, but since he has the 3rd highest WAR of our position players and 4th in wRC …he’s probably not being traded until the off-season. Ellsbury is hurt…but we still have no spots unless one more OFer goes down. And when one does go down, Frazier still may take the spot over Fowler (no guarantees…but at least possible).
thegreatcerealfamine
dynasty…Refsnyder is taking up a spot that Bird will plug. As for the outfielders situation Carter will probably (hopefully)be released opening up a spot for Fowler who all he’s done is rake compared to Frazier. On the pitching side..I look forward to Adams first start, hopefully against the Blue Jays!
rocky7
dynasty…This is just Ken Rosenthal being Ken Rosenthal, spitballing as usual.
Everything you said was right on….why take on somebody else’s mediocre third baseman which would probably cost us some pretty good prospects when they can stand pat and weather the storm.
billysbballz
I have an out of the box win now and keep the prospects solution but many will not like it.
Trade Didi, Aaron Hicks, Refsnyder, Chase Headley with cash and Chris Carter with cash to Royals for Hosmer and Moustakus who will both be free agents and Royals can resign next year and they added Hicksbto replace Cain long term and Didi as SS long term. Yanks replace Didi with Torres and Fowler with Hicks. Bird stays in AAA and gets swing right with the goal being a late season call up and next year first is his. Hosmer takes first and Moose takes third. We opened up some 40 man spots and we can promote Wade as a super utility to fill out the last roster spot. But that’s the land of make believe and most would refuse to deal Didi right now. I think we would have better lineup right now and maybe one of the best offensive teams in the league .
thegreatcerealfamine
They already have one of the best offenses in the league. Why would you give up Hicks for a middling player in Caine. Yes get rid of Refsnyder but no one will take Headley. Torres is in no way ready or should take Didis spot. The only player you mention I’d take would be Moose but he would cost too much. Bird will be back soon,he’s had that injury since the last Spring training game and should have been put on the DL.

Give me an Break !all those Players are Trash , who wants the Yankees Garage !
thegreatcerealfamine
Open mike night at Rons is on fridays DN!
Dynasty
I, for one, would love to own a Yankees garage. I’ll park my Yankee Mustang in it. By the way, some of what he posted is definitely garbage…but Hicks and Didi shockingly are not.
Mikel Grady
2009 mustang?
thegreatcerealfamine
Yea that’s just nuts on billys ideas. Garage wth? Anyway this guys probably a Rays fan!
willi
If there not Garage , why is no others Teams at least making an inquire about these Bums ?
thegreatcerealfamine
L
ReverieDays
That’s a laughly bad proposal, man.
davidcoonce74
That’s an odd proposal. I doubt many teams believe Hicks’ impressive season is real yet, plus the Yankees aren’t going to replace their starting center-fielder in the middle of a pennant race with a rookie, especially given Ellsbury’s concerns. Refsnyder isn’t worth anything and the Royals are rebuilding – they don’t really want Headley or Carter. Hosmer is an incredibly overrated player that i doubt the Yanks have too much interest in.
Dynasty
Right…and even if I had a crystal ball that told me Headley is going to continue being horrific, I’d still sooner turn to Wade, Torres, and Andujar, in that order, before I’d waste decent prospects for mediocrity elsewhere.
gofish 2
Ozuna for….Weaver+ ?
gyorkoff
Hmmm, Zach Duke and it’s a deal.
kaido24
More likely would be something like Carson Kelly, Luke Weaver plus one of our outfielders (not named Dexter Fowler (no trade clause)) for Ozuna plus more (possibly a reliever).
gyorkoff
Carson Kelly would be a tough pill to swallow since he’s the only apparent heir to Molina. I would love to see Ozuna come to the Cards though. We need some pop.
archmadness
The cardinals won’t trade Kelly at this point. From what I have seen him and Reyes are untouchables at this point. I can see Weaver, Gruchik, and maybe one more pitcher for Ozuna.
alexgordonbeckham
They just extended Molina so might as well cash on Kelly as a trade chip.
archmadness
Yes they did, but Yadi can’t continue to catch the way he has been. Why not keep Kelly let him learn from the best and split time with Yadi. The Marlins need pitching badly, the Cardinal’s 19 out of their top 30 prospects are pitchers. They only have 2 catchers on that list. Kelly who is the number 2 overall prospect and a kid named Martinez who is number 30.
sngehl01
Woof. Weaver grichuk are not getting ozuna. Lol.
redsfan48
They’d have to either give up Kelly, or give up both Weaver and another one of their top-100 prospects (Delvin Perez or Jack Flaherty) to get Ozuna I think. As for Grichuk, he has practically zero value right now, and certainly wouldn’t be part of the centerpiece for a trade. Best case, he’s a secondary asset in a trade.
Putmeincoach12
I wish they would trade Carpenter and let Molina play 1st next year with Kelly starting. Over Carpenter…
hodor 3
Molina’s bat would play as a poor man’s Joe Mauer at 1b.
CompanyAssassin
You’re talking 2 MLB ready prospects, and 2 MLB players, for a rental.
Kane U.
Rental? Ozuna is under team control until 2019. Plus, the Cards have the finances to extend the guy.
redsfan48
Ozuna is certainly not a rental. If they want the cheaper, rental option, there’s plenty available elsewhere. But Ozuna has 2.5 years of control, and that never comes cheap.
Macho King OG
The infield situation is actually pretty simple for the Yankks. Get rid of Headley, Torreyes (Whom I do like), Refsnyder, and Carter. Bring up Torres to play 3rd, Wade as the utility guy, and Bird and Austin to fight it out for 1B. Trade Holiday and bring up Fowler as the 4th OF. But you can then get guys Ab’s out of the DH spot.
Tiger_diesel92
Keep holiday. Just get rid of carter and headley. Refsnyder needs more playing time to get adjust.
thegreatcerealfamine
Why in the world would you trade Holiday?
Chris4Sale74
Amen to that! The guy has valued intangibles inside the clubhouse. Every young kid that’s been flourishing this year has said how much Matt has helped. You don’t deal that. He’s also been producing very well. I want him around myself, even beyond this year.
Putmeincoach12
And the absence of Holiday in the Cardinals dugout has been obvious in my eyes. They look like a team that has quit on themselves.
User 4245925809
He’s 20y old and hasn’t really produced that much at any level. Let his numbers catch up to his natural talent before shoving him onto the big stage please will most of you? If this was Devers (who has produced at every level he’s been at) and is also 20y old (2 months older) most would be screaming how he’s not ready to make the jump from AA and that’s pretty much the same for Torres who has just been promoted to AAA.. Let him catch up 1st everyone, then give him the chance, whether it’s 2018 or beyond.. It will happen.
Dynasty
Why trade Holliday? He has the 3rd best wRC for us. There’s no guarantee that Fowler’s offense will top his, and if we’re reducing Fowler’s defense by making him our new DH/4th OFer…what’s the point? The best I could even hope for is that he successfully fills Holiday’s shoes.
cardfan2011
Ozuna intrigues me, although I don’t think Mo would be willing to meet the price to acquire him
troll
ozuna, just what st louis needs, another head case.
Wainofan
I don’t see how ozuna is more than a slight upgrade I of over current options. He’s avg 2.5 war last 3 years. We have lots of 2 war players, problem is no superstars or 4-6 war players. Cards need to package together enough for a Josh Donaldson superstar type player, which would take a ton and be hard to make happen, or be sellers at deadline and stock pile prospects. Another 2-3 war player just isn’t enough of able improvement to sell farm.
sngehl01
Hes also only 26
baseballisdead
per baseball reference ozuna has 550 games in majors, and produced 10.4 WAR, that’s 3 WAR per 162 games
2.5 WAR in last 57 games
Wainofan
I am ready for heads though start rolling (manager, entire coaching staff) and then either pick up a big name player or be sellers and retool for a year or two. We’re young enough to keep core players and build with prospects/ prospect trades for year or two. Also feel like what we’re missing on this years cards team is the pujols, Edmonds, Beltran, rolen type player to drive it. Not sure ozuna is THAT guy but I could be wrong
troll
will clark, larry walker, beltran, as you mentioned, lance berkmann. as i’ve said before, justin morneau is that guy.
Wainofan
Ummm….no
Wainofan
Josh Donaldson, arenado, machado, votto, goldschmidt, etc. that level of player is what cards need. A superstar to carry offense on his shoulders. Not that any of those are likely or available, I get it. But the team has depth already, just needs one star. Which is why selling?at deadline stockpiling prospects this year to obtain enough prospects to flip for a superstar next year might be the path to take.
willi
Well then , the Cardinals need to Start rebuilding !
troll
um, no
Msvhs79
Just out of curiosity! Am I the only one that feels that the players don’t care playing for Matheny or Moziliak or what?
troll
it’s a mutiny
mike156
Headley has another year on his contract. They are winning with him playing poorly. They are a more exciting team with the added youth and athleticism. Torres is the future, but doesn’t need to be the present. Don’t bring in another Headley for prospects, and don’t yet bring up Torres.
alexgordonbeckham
Agreed 100%. He’s 20 years old and is struggling at Triple-A currently. Leave him down for the remainder of the year and think about it in the off-season.
thegreatcerealfamine
He’s been at triple A for a minute!
bronxbombers
It’s been a week and a half lmao
thegreatcerealfamine
He played the same amount as Jeter did at double A before getting a promotion. These guys either think he sucks there or are pushing him to the bigs. Some of them wouldn’t even want Harper..head scratcher..lol
Cardinals17
The Cardinals will stand pat. Actually, I see them as sellers rather that buyers. Mo can’t buy or trade with out admitting the team he built to contend has failed. The Coaches the Manager has picked Are failures, and the manager would be toast. He can’t make a move without shooting himself in his own foot.
outinleftfield
Pace of play rules they instituted have backfired and now games are longer per inning played. Manfred needs to stop meddling with a game that isn’t broken.
stretch123
Weaver, Kelly, and Gruicuk for Ozuna and maybe a prospect like Tyler Kolek or Dillon Peters? Maybe throw in Phelps if Marlins are out of it to deepen Cards bullpen?
Marlins could really use Weaver in their rotation next year. Koehler shouldnt come back if Marlins are smart… Cards get Ozuna to help anchor that lineup for two more years
jd396
More pace of play rules. Yeah. Of all the problems in baseball, that’s the one we should keep working on.
Gag me with a spoon.
STL11in11
At this point, trading top prospects would be a terrible idea for the Cardinals. They might want to consider a rebuild themselves.
troll
after the blowout tonight, anything is possible.
Dad
Carpenter and one of our crappy bullpen guys, say anyone but segriet, oh, Rosenthal plus Parolta and Wong for Ozuna.Any combination to get a outfielder with some pop and a relief pitcher or 5,Demand they take Matheny as well ! Even Wainright is available in my book
