Saturday’s minor moves:
- Utilityman T.J. Rivera has lost his spot on the Mets’ roster, as the team optioned him (and right-hander Tyler Pill) to Triple-A on Saturday, Mike Puma of the New York Post was among those to report (Twitter link). The Mets sent Rivera and Pill down to make room for outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and righty Seth Lugo, both of whom are back from the disabled list. Rivera ranks among the Mets’ top nine in plate appearances this year, having taken 114 and batted a passable .255/.310/.402. He swatted his second home run of the season Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to stave off a demotion.
- The Padres have outrighted righty Tyrell Jenkins to make room for reliever Carter Capps, whom they reinstated from the 60-day disabled list and optioned to Triple-A El Paso, tweets AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. A former big-time prospect with the Cardinals, Jenkins joined the Padres off waivers from the Reds over the winter and has struggled with San Diego’s Triple-A affiliate, notching a 6.71 ERA, 6.42 K/9 and a 5.98 BB/9 over 61 2/3 innings in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. Capps, meanwhile, continues to work his way back from the Tommy John surgery he underwent as a Marlin in 2016.
- The Twins have selected the contract of left-hander Nik Turley from Triple-A and optioned fellow southpaw Randy Rosario, per Phil Miller of the Star Tribune (on Twitter). Minnesota will need to dump someone from its 40-man roster to make room for the addition of Turley, who has excelled at both the Double-A and Triple-A levels this season. The 27-year-old will make his major league debut Sunday with a start in San Francisco, with which he was a farmhand in 2015.

Tj hits and while Cabrera and Reyes do absolutely nothing but have errors and get out this team is so frustrating
metseventually
I mean Cabrera is gonna stay over both, but really Reyes should be gone now.
chri
Yeah or how Neil Ramirez and Josh Smoker stayed but not Pill.
metseventually
And hit just hit a home run! Where’s Mikeyank to say how the Mets are failures for doing sending him down?
mikeyank55
The Metsies show their true colors when they play good teams. That they have such a bad record in such a bad division needs to be factored into things. Stop getting excited when you play the Braves, Marlins or phillies, Eventually as you will be sucking wind against the central and western division.
Major weakness up the middle. Laughable bullpen. Dumb Manager. Powerless GM. Cheap owners that love the Dodgers more than their own team, and won’t invest in their own team.

Think this deal has that it’s possible feel?
Arizona sends Zachary Grienke and his 125 million dollar contract (not including money owed this year) to the Yanks for Elsbury and his 80 million (not including this year) and Headley 13 million one year left and a starter such as Cessa or German who are not necessarily top prospects but are good arms.
Does it make sense for Arizona? Well Grienke is there Ace and they are having a good season but they have decent pitching and there outfield is weak and if Elsbury comes back off DL and if he continues hitting as he was having a decent season before injury he becomes Zonas best cf option and Headley can be moved all over field. Arizona gets out from Grienke and Yanks eat more money overall. Yanks don’t have to deal any farm hands and can promote from within to fill Headley and Els roster spot.
Nahhhh makes no sense.

Yankees aren’t rebuilding. They wouldn’t hesitate to trade prospects for Zack if they feel it’s a good deal. No way Ellsbury goes though. Yankees would love to deal headley. That frees up a spot for….. torres
billysbballz
The Yanks are in a semi rebuild while contend meaning they aren’t dumping there farm after finally rebuilding it into what it is for a pitcher who may not be better then anything they have or a pitcher whose contract is awful unless they dump awful contracts in turn.
Boom
I said it!
sidewinder11
Outfield is weak? Pollock, Peralta and Tomas are a far cry from a weak outfield when healthy
strostro
1. D-Backs don’t need 3rd base or OF (Lamb, Tomas, Pollock, Peralta) 2. Greinke is worth more than Ellsburry and Headley
padresfan
Tomas is a horrible defensive anywhere player
jtworsley
Why would a team currently holding a wildcard spot trade away their ace, let alone for two over the hill players on awful deals?
billysbballz
To get out from that awful contract and yes Elsbury is an upgrade in that outfield!
jd396
When you view it through homer-colored glasses it all becomes so clear.
billysbballz
Says you because of your triple colored reflection homer glasses. You missed the reasoning of a deal like this because of bias!

Twins fan here and it still makes no sense. Greinke has been pitching really well and I’m sure Arizona wants more then Ellsbury, Headley, and a mid tier prospect. Ellsbury would be an upgrade over Tomas, but Headley doesn’t really make sense for the Dbacks besides an expiring contract. Greinke has a massive deal, but he’s still an ace and won’t get traded away unless if they actually get higher end prospects and if they’re losing. Don’t think the Yankees would want to commit that money to Greinke anyway.
jdgoat
That’s awful for Arizona
GareBear
I’m not sure the yanks would want to be locked into grienke’s longer contract either. It isn’t the worst proposal, especially if the dbacks are eager to wash their hands of the Dave Stewart nightmare. But it is most definitely not going to happen.
aamatho18
Not like Greinke is pitching well for a contending team or anything..
davidcoonce74
There’s not a team in baseball that wants Ellsbury and his contract, especially considering his current injury issues. Headley is dead money too. Greinke still has value, although that’s a bad contract, and Cashman seems to be getting better at avoiding bad contracts.
joeyrocafella
TJ Rivera’s bat has been pretty effective when he plays so I’m wondering why Matt Reynolds didn’t get sent down instead…
iampatrickg
Maybe trying to get TJ more regular ABs.
