As Baseball America’s fifth-ranked prospect, the Mets’ Amed Rosario could conceivably help a scuffling team that has gotten little production from the left side of its infield this year. Despite the Mets’ struggles, though, and the strong likelihood that the Super Two deadline has passed, a promotion isn’t imminent, according to Ken Davidoff of the New York Post. Instead, the Mets want the 21-year-old to continue developing with Triple-A Las Vegas, where he has slashed .339/.379/.500 with six home runs and 11 stolen bases in 269 plate appearances. While Rosario’s in a rather hitter-friendly environment, his output has still been 30 percent better than the Pacific Coast League average. “I think so far this season is so far going pretty excellent, I would say,” Rosario told Davidoff through an interpreter. “I think we’re really seeing the fruits of the labor that’s been put in.”
More from New York and another East Coast city:
- Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval was out of the lineup Saturday, and he’ll likely sit through at least Monday as they work with him on his defensive issues, reports Ian Browne of MLB.com. Sandoval has made four errors in only 48 chances, notes Browne, and has already posted minus-6 Defensive Runs Saved in just 186 1/3 innings at the hot corner. Now in the third season of a five-year, $95MM contract, Sandoval has also acquitted himself poorly on the offensive side, having batted just .205/.253/.364 in 95 plate appearances.
- The Yankees expect closer Aroldis Chapman to come off the disabled list next weekend, manager Joe Girardi said Saturday (via Mark Fischer of NJ.com). The flamethrowing southpaw landed on the DL on May 13 with an inflamed left rotator cuff, which came after back-to-back rough outings that saw Chapman combine to allow four earned runs on six hits and two walks (three strikeouts) over 1 1/3 innings. Prior to those performances, Chapman gave up only one earned run, six hits and four walks, with 18 punchouts, in 11 1/3 frames.
- Red Sox left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez’s recovery from a partial dislocation of his right kneecap is on an encouraging path, writes Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald. Rodriguez played catch from 130 to 140 feet Saturday, after which manager John Farrell stated: “He’s made, I think, very good progress in the days since being examined by Dr. (James) Andrews. We’re taking this in five-day work increments. He’s coming up on this first five days. We’ll map out increases in physical activity, agility work, all that, after tomorrow. We would hope in the coming days, he’s back on the mound here soon.” The 24-year-old was in the midst of arguably his best season before the injury, with a 3.54 ERA, 9.59 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 61 innings.

The Yankees really haven’t missed Chapman that much with Betances doing a great job and the team having a positive run differential of over 100. However, sliding Chapman back in to close, moving Betances back to set up will take a great deal of pressure off of guys like Layne and Clippard who pitch well in middle relief but seem to struggle with the back end pressure. The team will only get better as the pitching gets back on course and Sanchez, Hick, Judge and Holliday continue to crush it. Other than Headley and Carter the team is a threat from top to bottom.
seckert15
Layne pitch well in middle relief? ERA over 7! Glad he was DFA just now.
adamontheshore
Carter has been pretty darn good over the last week or so. He’s doing what he was signed to do: hit home runs, walk, and strike out. He’s always been streaky. I’m a bit concerned about his production once Bird comes back, assuming Bird is doing well, as I don’t think he’s a productive PH. But, for what they signed him for he’s basically earned it over the last week (seeming that about a few hundred grand is what most teams pay for a single HR these days). Headley has also been better of late, and with the rest of the offense playing how they are I can’t complain much about him. Torres needs to get his work done in the minors, and hopefully be a starter opening day ’18.

The Red Sox my just have eat that money and DFA him because he’s not giving you anything but a headache there’s no need for him to take up a spot on the 40 man roster

Agreed. Time to end the Sandoval experiment.
dlevin11
Sox should try to get Moustakas from Royals before trade deadline.
slogar1
That’s why the Giants wanted to put a fitness inclusion in Sandoval’s contract and the reason why he left & went to Boston, because they they didn’t. You could say Boston got screwed but, fact is, Boston screwed themselves.

But they keep right on rolling don’t they? When was the last time the Red Sox did a “rebuild”? You’d need to go back before World War Two to begin your search.
Carl Crawford (worst contract ever).
Rusney Castillo
Panda

In 1965 they went 62-100. Probably a rebuild, but 2 years later, they won the pennant…

“but 2 years later, they won the pennant”
Phillies are in Year Six of their rebuild.
A rebuild is when you allow your farm to deteriorate to nothing and your big club is old. A look of an expansion team in its first year.
Hardball Times (FanGraphs) published a study over a ten year period and found the Red Sox to have the most WAR from a farm system over that time and the Phillies the least.
That explains the difference between the Red Sox over the past six years and the Phillies. If you look at the spending both domestic and July 2nd over that period you’ll find the Red Sox at the top and the Phillies down at the bottom.
If you look at market sizes you’ll find the Phillies own the largest market for a single team city while the Red Sox are almost tied with Atlanta. Where has all the Phillies fans money disappeared to?
bluegorilla
Didn’t they finish last 3 years out of 4 a couple years ago? I know they had a championship in the middle, but Boston is not exactly renowned for their consistency.

I thought Sandoval was in decent shape this year though? I think the issue is just that he sucks now.

But did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.

Has there ever been a contract that turned ugly so quickly besides Sandoval? It seems like the moment he got there he just fell off a cliff.

The bigger you are the harder you fall…

Carl Crawford?
No one wants to remember Carl Crawford.
lucienbel
Yeah, Crawford was a tougher one than this in my opinion. Crawford really just fell off and disappeared. Prior to that he’d been great. Always thought they’d get 3-4 pretty good years out of him.
With Sandoval, I always had a feeling the whole thing could go bad really quick.
madmc44
Carl Crawford—was a longer contract than Pablo. Two major bad moves…
Evan Longoria is the straw that would make the Sox very productive. He’s the 3 B I would shoot for: Great bat for Fenway, Clutch. Good contract. Good 3 B would
fit in to the middle of the lineup. It would give Devers at least two years and time to become
a solid 3 B or change to a 1 B. What would it take: Sam Travis, Brian Johnson and the best
RHanded pitching Prospect left in the Sox System or ERod and Travis ?
atlbraves2010
Im pretty sure the rays would demand devers as a starting point
madmc44
That’s a fair starting point and ending point unless you was to extend to include Cobb and Longoria for Devers, Pomerantz and Swihart.
thegreatcerealfamine
Swihart..come on man really! Pomerantz..you can’t be serious.
BSPORT
They aren’t the Dodgers willing to let Boston dump their garbage on them.
jh8913
Why would they trade their star and face of the franchise to a division rival? Though the rays are in an interesting situation and could move a whole lot of their players soon. Just seems weird to trade him in division
madmc44
Swihart is a fine catcher however the Sox have two good catchers. I’ve been shocked they haven’t made him more versatile by playing him at 3 B regularly.
Josh Donaldson was originally drafted by the Cubs as a Catcher but he’s now an AllStar 3 B and possibly an Emergency catcher..
So Swihart has played some left field–he couldn’t do any worse than Pablo for the minimum salary. You could then carry Pablo with his $18 M and Swihart for his 4550,000–have Pablo Pinch hitting until you find a trade partner.
