With the traditional first-round picks in the books, we’ll use this post to track the “sandwich” selections that come before the second round: compensatory picks awarded to clubs that lost QO-declining free agents as well as Round A of the competitive balance picks (tradeable choices that are awarded by lottery to low-revenue/small market clubs).
Here are the picks:

30. Cubs — Alex Lange, RHP, Louisiana State

Cubs drafting pitchers before hitters? What have you done with Theo? Lol.
2nd round tonight?
Yeah its happening now but not on TV
I just saw the Braves pick, we need a 2nd round thread mlbtr
Agreed. Kind of ridiculous that it’s only being covered online (not a dig at MLBTR – a dig at the MLB).
A shortstop named Jeter. I hope he makes the show just to make broadcasts interesting.
Live on MLB tv
Is Sam Carlson not planning on signing? How’d the Mariners get him at 55?
Sounds like he plans to sign. The Mariners got a steal.
Can you do a round by round result for the 1st ten rounds- maybe also do a piece on the best value pick you loved, the worst pick that was a reach, and the surprise pick that you by round?
I like that idea
Id also like to add the idea of doing a signability piece. We know teams draft guys in later rounds n dish out over slot value- would love to see a piece on players potentially to sign and players who may forgo signing to play at college
Am I the only one who thinks it’s odd that 2 division leaders got a pick in the competitive balance round? I know it’s last seasons standings. Just kinda strange.
It’s not about the their record, it’s about market size/revenue.
Yeah competitive balance is just an incorrect name for it. It is more like financial balance or a “welfare round” for small markets.
