The Red Sox have announced that righty Steven Wright will undergo season-ending left knee surgery. The precise surgery is a cartilage restoration procedure. Wright is expected to be ready for the 2018 campaign.
The 32-year-old Wright was a revelation for the Sox last season, breaking out with a 3.33 ERA, 7.3 K/9, 3.3 BB/9 and a 43.7 percent ground-ball rate in 156 2/3 innings. The knuckleballer began wearing a knee brace late in Spring Training, telling reporters at the time that he’d been dealing with on-and-off soreness but considered the brace precautionary. At the time, Wright said that he didn’t believe any singular issue had led to the knee pain. Clearly, however, that discomfort continued to mount, and it’ll now end up costing him roughly an entire year’s worth of innings.

With Wright sidelined for the remainder of the season and David Price still yet to make his 2017 debut, Boston’s rotation will consist of Chris Sale, Rick Porcello, Drew Pomeranz, Eduardo Rodriguez and Kyle Kendrick for the time being. Southpaws Brian Johnson and Henry Owens remain on the 40-man roster as depth options in Triple-A, and fellow lefty Roenis Elias will give the Sox another optionable starter once he returns from an intercostal strain.
Wright, at some point, will be shifted to the 60-day disabled list to clear a 40-man roster spot for the Sox, and he’ll accrue an entire year of service time while on the shelf. That’ll push him beyond the three-year mark, thereby making him eligible for arbitration for the first time in his career next offseason. Boston can still control Wright through the 2020 season via the arbitration process.

Hope he feels better but I have to be honest, I’m not gonna miss him him

Rough year for Sox pitching.
Ken M.
And yet…. they have the 2nd lowest ERA in the majors.
jdgoat
You can thank sale for that. Rodriguez has been good but he’s outperforming his peripherals
Pedro Cerrano's Voodoo
Yes thank Sale…. and Kimbrel, and Pomeranz….. and Porcello , oh and Hembree and Rodriguez, there’s Barnes and Scott and Kelly …. but just those guys.
jdgoat
1. I thought he meant starting pitching.
2. Pomeranz has a 4.00 era which isn’t all that great
Ken M.
Nope. Entire staff. #2.
jdgoat
I see their bullpen must really be stepping up then since their missing two of their best setup men
chesteraarthur
Porcello has an ERA of 4.5
Ken M.
So does Tanaka. #NotAnAce

It’s only one month in remember. The effects of poor pitching don’t come out this early….it’s after July when they will start springing leaks everywhere.

Don’t let the door hit ya Steve on the way out…
taimak38
Just don’t understand why you would say something like that. Let’s see if you can do what they do.
ReverieDays
Such a stupid argument.
bastros88
right, who wants a former all-star and a guy that can go deep into innings and give you quality games
mulcahy01
This is why you don’t have pitchers pinch run, thanks john Farrell
ghost of harambe
The knee injury had nothing to to with him pinch running
mookiessnarl
But, but, it’s all Farrell’s fault. I’m positive he injured his knee when he hurt his shoulder diving back into second base for no reason. Fire Farrell!
ghost of harambe
Soz, i forgot it was Farrell’s fault, just like everything else that goes wrong in the world
mookiessnarl
Personally I think people don’t like Farrell because he uses big words and too many of them at that. I like him just fine.
mulcahy01
Your correct. I read this whole article wrong. My bad.
jdgoat
Are you serious?
billy neftleberg
notice how jeff says Judge never hit 20 hrs in the minors, neither did Mike Trout, Jeff.
anything but to admit they could be wrong.
padresfan
How does that imply to this article ?
Dude is either seeing the ball really well or…?
Pitching make adjustments and he will go back to striking out, grounding out, or flying out
That’s what baseball really is… a game of strategy and adjustments

you are a tool
lesterdnightfly
Go away. You waste space and time with your hurt feelings, rampant self-justification, and monotonous soapbox rants.
Go to ESPN, MLB, Bleacher Report, or CBS sites or your fine NY daily rags and whine there. You’ll have plenty of company with countless others who insist on being “right”.
Or go to a party and clear the room in 15 seconds.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Lol @ you accusing someone else of wasting space and time!
lesterdnightfly
Hey Ryan, has Bethancourt cleared waivers yet?
p.s. Sorry, didn’t know neftleberg was your cousin.

Talk about wasting time and space — the same unfunny comment posted over and over.
mikeyank55
Hey Lester, it’s time to take your own anti rant medicine. So go sit in the corner and be quiet
lesterdnightfly
Can’t. You’ve filled up the whole corner.
mookiessnarl
I wish Wright nothing but the best, but knucklers are more volatile commodities than relief pitchers. Wright was headed for a very bad season, and this team probably just dodged a bullet.
padresfan
Padres got some more pitchers for you
Lol
ghost of harambe
Yes, but they’ll probably be injured for longer than wright
padresfan
Lol. Some of them are actually doing work. A couple of rough outings stings
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
You mean like how Drew Pomeranz hasn’t missed a start for you guys while Anderson Espinoza probably needs Tommy John surgery?
ghost of harambe
Hasnt missed a start? He moved to the BP last season to prevent an injury and started this season on the DL
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Yes and how many starts did he miss down the stretch last year? And how many days did he spend on the DL last year?
Oh and did I mention Anderson Espinoza probably needing Tommy John surgery?
chesteraarthur
You: “You mean like how Drew Pomeranz hasn’t missed a start for you guys while Anderson Espinoza probably needs Tommy John surgery?”
ESPN: “Pomeranz will miss his scheduled start Thursday night at Yankee Stadium in part because of soreness in his left forearm,” espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/17655380/drew-pomeranz-bos…
Man it’s almost like you can look these things up instead of just spouting nonsense ALL OF THE TIME.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
You conveniently fail to address the part about Anderson Espinoza probably needing Tommy John surgery
ghost of harambe
If he does need it the red sox didn’t know at the time of the trade, the padres knew about pomeranz
chesteraarthur
What does Anderson Espinoza have to do with you just blatantly lying to try to make a point?. It doesn’t change the fact that you just spew nonsense that you could see is false with 15 seconds of googling.
When half of your comment is predicated on a bs, why would anyone feel the need to address your entire point? You obviously don’t care about facts and just want to yap.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
He has to do with the fact that literally every Tommy John pitcher involved in every trade made between the Padres and the Marlins or Red Sox last year is currently employed by the Padres yet those teams still feel entitled to cry about it.
ghost of harambe
Espinoza doesn’t need TJ yet, and the red sox didn’t know he needed it. The padres knew rea was injured and lied about it. That is why he was sent back. Also, at the time of the trade espinoza was healthy and pomeranz was injured
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Oh. Pomeranz was injured at the time of the trade? How many starts did he miss last year? And how many days did he spend on the DL last year?
And on Espinoza. Keyword: yet
lesterdnightfly
WC Ryan:
Talk about wasting time and space — the same unresearched garbage posted over and over.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
What unresearched garbage? It’s the truth that Pomeranz missed ZERO starts and spent ZERO days on the DL in 2016 and that every Tommy John pitcher involved in all those trades is currently employed by the Padres.
bastros88
a stick of gum for Jared Weaver
padresfan
Depends on the flavor
vinscully16
Hope he heals up. In the meantime, not going to miss watching a knuckleballer every five days – boring, like watching a pitching machine.
User 4245925809
He’s a fast worker on the mound. not like some guy such as Bucholz, who would walk all over the mound between pitches, or throw to 1b multiple times per inning.
To speed up the game? More than anything would be to put some teethe into the between pitches the tactics stalling around both hitters and pitchers pull off.. cashing out that nonsense “music” some ppl think they must have and stepping out of the batter’s box at all is number 1. Then pitchers and the rosin bag.. One visit per half inning is more than enough.
Use Wade Miley’s between pitch timer as a guide and games go quick
jdgoat
I don’t think the music does anything. It’s the guys who need to adjust their batting gloves and go for a walk between every pitch
User 4245925809
3 of the biggest Boston offenders in recent memory bhave been Ortiz, Youkillis and pedroia. That walking around between and adjusting of every piece of equipment.. asking for time and being auto granted used to never happen.. Umpires are the ones who allowed the game to get longer for those reasons.
Pitcher wants to go? Throw the ball ready or not and have an umpire with the GUTS to call the pitch, whatever it was.. That nonchalant strutting around players do will quickly cease. Can’t say how many times have seen Miley at the ready and waiting for a hitter to finish off some garbage routine between pitches..
MafiaBass
Don’t forget Nomar
rmullig2
I bet they trade what’s left of the farm for Quintana. Sox are in win-now mode so no prospect is safe. Dombrowski will go all-in and offer Devers, Travis, and Groome along with a few minor pieces.
nysoxsam
Time to deal from the one strength they have, catching depth. Not saying give someone away but there is value there and the Sox need a third baseman (many teams need pitching so a bidding war would likely prevent a valuable starter coming back).
Dookie Howser, MD
Honest question: What type of starting pitcher do you imagine Sandy Leon, Christian Vazquez, or Blake Swihart bringing back?
Michael Macaulay-Birks
Depends on which one, and what club is the Red Sox are negotiating with, I think all three have value probably just not as much as everyone else thinks
Michael Macaulay-Birks
Sorry for the grammar
ghost of harambe
Catching depth isn’t great. 3 players, all with question marks about offense or defence
nysoxsam
Not getting a starter. They’re not mortgaging the farm as someone earlier suggested. They fully intend to stay under the threshold this year to reset the luxury taxes for 2018 free agents. Leon and Vasquez are two of the top Sox to eight arms and should bring back a third baseman if Devers is not ready. They blew it with Swihart but many teams would still love to have that bat. problem is they exposed his lack of power which lowers his corner outfield value.
