1:51pm: The Red Sox have now announced that Pedroia has been placed on the DL, with Sandoval indeed being activated in his place.
1:10pm: The Red Sox will place second baseman Dustin Pedroia on the 10-day disabled list with a “severe” sprain of his left wrist, according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. Pedroia is expected to miss at least the next two weeks and is headed for a second opinion, Abraham adds. Pablo Sandoval is expected to be activated from the disabled list in a corresponding move, per the report.
The injury to Pedroia is the latest blow to the Red Sox’ infield depth, as the team has also lost Marco Hernandez for the season (shoulder surgery) and is unsure when Brock Holt will be able to return to action due to ongoing symptoms of vertigo. Recent trades of Travis Shaw (for Tyler Thornburg) and Carlos Asuaje (part of the Craig Kimbrel package) have also thinned out Boston’s infield depth.
The 33-year-old Pedroia, who suffered the wrist injury in a recent collision at first base with Chicago’s Jose Abreu, had been off to a solid start at the plate this season. In 197 plate appearances, he’s slashed .292/.369/.380 with a pair of homers while chipping in his typically strong defensive contributions at second base. With Pedroia out through at least mid-June, the Sox can shift Deven Marrero from third base over to second base and/or give more playing time to Josh Rutledge, who has plenty of experience at second.

In a team meeting, Panda has volunteered to play second with Peedy out and Hanley has volunteered to play 3B tonight.
Can you imagine?

Missed in all of this was trading away all of the middle infield depth the last bit over a year in Dubon and Asuaje. Marrero hits like a pitcher, code for can’t hit squat.

Rutledge can hit though, he just can’t slug.

I couldn’t agree more, JohnSilver. The Sox have traded away too much young talent and it is going to continue to haunt them as these injuries pile up. The Sox can’t afford to make any more trades as their cupboards are already bare. If they need more help and don’t think anyone in the minors is ready, they’ll need to scour the waiver wire for cheap talent and/or sign an aging free agent. It’s a shame to see how far the Sox farm teams have fallen in MLB rankings. The Pomeranz deal hurt them badly (Espinoza should have fetched more), and while I loved the Sale acquisition, but that deal took the last of the Sox “can’t miss” prospects (not counting Andrew B. of course). I hate to say it but Devers is overrated so we can’t look to him to be a savior down the road. He plays below average defense and strikes out too much.
The Red Sox need to nail this draft, and get at least 3-4 college players who can move through the system quickly if they want to stay competitive for the long term. With the huge contracts for Price, Hanley, Porcello & Panda already on the books and new deals needed soon for Mookie, Sale, JBJ, Xander, E-Rod & Kimbrell, there is no way the Sox will be able to keep all of these guys, so they need an infusion of young talent very soon to make up for the unavoidable losses coming over the next 2-3 years. Sox might actually need to be sellers in 2017 or 2018 if they are not in the hunt. I’d hate to see it but it might be their only option since they don’t currently have the talent in the minors anymore. Here’s hoping they catch fire and win it all his year or next as big changes are coming after that!

Really? Only Young, Abad & Moreland are Fa’s in 2018. Some of Holt, Hernandez, Carson Smith, Brian Johnson, Sam Travis, Devers, Thornberg, Workman & Swihart should be ready next year if not by by Sept. I don’t expect them all to be stars but it is unreasonable to expect them all to be busts. Boegarts (he was expected by 2015) in 2013, Mookie in 2015, JBJ, Leon, & Travis Shaw in 2016 came from nowhere to help the sox.

Sorry to share the news. Trader Dave is just warming up. More trades coming as he will strip the minor leagues bare as he loads up on over-the-hill veterans with bloated contracts.
Remember the motto from his Tiger Days, “the bigger the trade, the better the news conference”.

Red Sox got Josh Tobias, a decent prospect, from the Phillies over the off-season.
aff10
Tobias is an ok prospect (and a great get for Bucholz), but he’s also 24 and not exactly tearing up AA. Hard to imagine he’s the answer
mikedickinson
He’s hitting .300 with a .330 OBP after tearing up A ball. I think he’s surprised many in the organization with his play this year.
TMoneyDogVIP
Tobias has only played about 25 games in the AA. He’s doing decent but no way should they call him right up to the MLB this fast.

The Red Sox will overcome Pedroia’s loss for 10 days.
Sooner or later, the Red Sox will have to play without Pedey at 2B.
This will be a good opportunity to see how life without him in the lineup will be.
barkinghumans77
I’d assume that life without him won’t look like these 10 days. Boston has money and will sign or trade for his eventual replacement.
sampsonite168
At this point you could make 3 separate All-Star teams out of players on the DL that would destroy any MLB team.
vinscully16
“Severe sprain,” that sounds unpleasant. Sprains are nasty business. Pedroia is banged up from the elbows down, such a violent swing, too. Full credit to Pedroia’s ever present willingness to compete.
mikeyank55
He’s going to diplomatically take an early season vacation to the Cape. Pedey is banged up and also quietly fuming with the antics of the “bash brothers” who have contributed practically nothing this season and not showing any clubhouse leadership.

How about a make good trade from the Padres? Ryan Schimpf for Shaun Anderson
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
And that helps us how?
jacobteam
Rebuilding Padres make good on the Pomeranz trade and get future MLB bullpen piece in Anderson.
Contending Red Sox get power bat that can play 2B/3B in Schimpf. Once Pedroia returns, team has clutch bench bat.
If you don’t like Anderson, you can throw around other names, but Schimpf in Boston makes a lot of sense.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Okay. Why don’t you guys make good on the Pomeranz trade by paying the remainder of Hector Olivera’s contract?
jacobteam
Done! Cash or Check?
Big fan of Pomeranz, but probably not worth the ridiculous amount still owed by SD (28.5 mil, I believe).
Nah, I stick by the Schimpf deal. Pads can use a good minor league arm or two from Boston for a guy they picked up as a minor league FA.

Red Sox Docs are famous for understating injuries. Pedey will be out far longer than 10 days and when he comes back too early he wont hit much. Done a decent job getting on base this year but almost no power. Might be forced to rush Devers up
mikeyank55
Trader Dave is flipping Devers to the Mets for Curtis Granderson. It kills two birds with one stone. He loves to trade young talent and bring in old washed up players.

The amount of doomsday predictions and internet doctors in the comments here is amazing.

These guys didn’t even go to internet medical school, like I did. WebMD Class of 2008! Go Docs! Woo!
Bruin1012
The Red Sox will be just fine teams deal with injuries. The Red Sox haven’t even played well this year and are only three out of first place and 5 games over .500. The Red Sox have a great young core and will be a playoff contender for the next few years at least the future is looking really bright at this point.
Gwynning's Anal Lover
The Red Sox could trade for Josh Harrison or Alen Hanson (who was just placed on waivers). Why not get a player who could serve as a temp second baseman and then a Holt-type replacement off the bench when Pedroia returns.
