The Red Sox have halted rehab work for utilityman Brock Holt, as Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe was among those to report on Twitter. Holt was advised “to shut down from playing for the foreseeaable future” by a head trauma specialist, per the report.
Holt, 28, has already missed significant time with vertigo. It seemed he was nearing a return when recurring symptoms arose, leading to the change in plans. It seems the experts advised a more cautious approach after prior efforts at recovery proved halting.
There’s no timeline at present for Holt’s return; indeed, the entire undertaking seems designed to allow the issues to fully abate before Holt pushes again. As Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald tweets, the plan is to wait until Holt’s “symptoms totally fade.” It’s obviously not possible to know just when that will occur; the focus will surely be on ensuring Holt’s overall well-being before considering how to get him back on the field.
Boston would surely have liked to have Holt available to help out at third base, but instead the club has gone most of the year without the versatile defender. Holt has appeared in just six contests after averaging more than one hundred annually over the past three campaigns. Over that span, he compiled a .274/.335/.381 slash with 13 home runs and 24 stolen bases over 1,325 plate appearances.

Im starting to worry about this. These symptoms have persisted for quite a while now. I hope this isnt a permanent development. Brock is a hell of a value as a utility player, not to mention it would be horrible to see such a promising career cut short.

No worries. He’s waiting for big pay day players to contribute (lol) before agreeing to go into the toxic clubhouse.

It took the Orioles’ Brian Roberts two years to fully recover from the concussion he gave himself, and he was never the same player (although his advancing age might have also played a part in that). Best to put Holt on the 60 day DL and forget about him until he is fully recovered.

Yeah, this is scary stuff. Nick Esasky’s career ended because of vertigo.

I was thinking the same thing about Esasky, and on an even darker note about a friend now recovering with great promise from surgery to remove a brain tumor after only moderate but persistent vertigo prompted the battery of tests that revealed his once life-threatening condition.

Completely agree. I know someone who has vertigo on and off related to a lifelong migraine problem and it gives them absolute Hell at times. Couldn’t imagine any sort of sports career with such a thing.
Hopefully Holt will end up with better results than Esasky…have loved Holt’s attitude, ability, and willingness to do whatever has been needed of him over the last few years. Would be a shame to see that end.

Jeff, do you see devers an option at any point this year?

Here’s to hoping Brock Holt all the best. He is the definition of a gamer, and a man that every team would love to have in their locker room. Not to mention, he’s also one heck of a ball player as well. He’s versatile, clutch, and he knows how to play the game, making “quality outs” and sacrificing his own statistics to always put his team in the best positon to win.
I truly wish him and his family all the best as he recovers from this…

Wow bravesfan88…you’re talking about Brock Holt right?
Nice utility player, but where do you get the “sacrificing his own statistics to always put his team in the best position to win” comment. Quality outs?
If not for being a utility player, he probably wouldn’t have a single position that he could call his own for any length of time on the Sox without filling in for a significant injury to somebody else. .
Clutch???, I’m sure he’s had his opportunities to shine but he’s a .270 hitter on a great hitting team in a hitters dream ballpark.
Don’t want to be too critical of the guy as he is a team asset that plays well, and you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

Pardon my ignorance, but what does a person suffering from vertigo go through? Pain? Side effects?
NoPepper
It wrecks your sense of balance and causes dizziness.
mikeyank55
Take a look at Hanley’s recent photo showing off his hair grooming. Imagine showing up for an important career/business meeting looking like that. Dizziness comes on pretty quick.

Vertigo is easy to look up on the Internet.
Generally caused by some type of inner ear infection causing amongst other symptoms, nausea, vomiting, headaches, a spinning sensation, and loss of balance amongst others which you can read about.
All this stuff can last for minutes to hours or more, and come back after time.

I truly pray that Holy gets better and returns to the game, but I also pray that these doctors don’t overlook the possibility of LIME DISEASE and miss the window for treatment! Vertigo is a very strange symptom and can be related to numerous conditions, but Drs seem to not consider lime disease until later in the prognosis. My prayers are with Brock and his family and it’s great to see the Sox doing well in his absence. God bless you all!!!
