The Red Sox have placed righty Steven Wright on the 10-day DL with a knee sprain, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal was among those to report on Twitter. Boston will call up reliever Brandon Workman to take the open roster spot, though it’s not yet known who’ll account for Wright’s slot in the rotation.
It’s not yet clear at all how serious an issue the knee problem is. Teams are certainly utilizing the newly shortened ten-day disabled period to help with roster maintenance, and that’s especially true of starters who can simply be skipped while they are out. But Wright has had some recent knee issues.
Wright has also markedly struggled for most of the year, posting an unsightly 8.25 ERA over 24 frames through five starts. He has managed just 4.9 K/9 to go with 1.9 BB/9 while permitting nine home runs. That’s neither the length nor the quality that the club needs from the knuckler.
Whether there’s a better option on hand, though, isn’t clear. While Kyle Kendrick has struggled, Henry Owens and Brian Johnson have each been rather successful at Triple-A, and both already have 40-man spots. With David Price still a ways away from his anticipated return, Boston will likely need to hope for better from Wright — who, it should be noted, is out of options — or one of the available replacements for a while longer.

I thought this said placed on outright waivers and i wasn’t really surprised. Man he’s fallen off a cliff after his injury

I would call up Henry Owens from Pawtucket just to see what he can do.
korn_cakes33
Nothing. The answer he is he can do nothing.

Call up Henry Owens from Pawtucket and see what he has as a starter.
ReverieDays
He’s never shown much as one.

Have you guys missed every Owens start ever? Do NOT call up Henry Owens.
B-Strong
Exactly. We know what he can do. Give up lots of runs.

All of the above is true but some pitchers take longer to establish themselves. Seems like a fantasy at this point but I still see Owens’ potential being a cross between Lester and John Tudor. I know my age is showing but unless there’s a trade option, I give Owens one more shot.

Johnson was serviceable last call up…

Someone has to start a game come Thursday and Owens hasn’t been terrible at Pawtucket, tho he has still had his career long control issues.
Most like to over look someone has got to make starts and just complain, complain.. Complain.. It’s been happening more last cpl years here and have little clue what’s going on IMO within an organization. Boston has few options to make the emergency start.. Owens and Johnson. Velezquez and Kendrick are not on the 40 man roster. kendrick probably won’t be for a 1 shot like this and Velezquez isn’t ready.
neither Owens/Johnson are worth anything as future MLB material. hope either can go 5 innings and the offense scores.. Nothing else

I said it during spring training: if Kyle Kendrick makes the Boston rotation, then the Blue Jays will make the playoffs.
(It’s now the Jays’ only hope!)
Brixton
Or the Yankees at this point

Give Owens a shot. If he can stop giving up so many walks he may do ok. Worth a chance.

Henry Owens has the best swing and miss stuff out of all of there current options to replace Wright but the worst fastball command. He has to command his fastball better big league hitters don’t swing at the pitches that AAA will swing at and until he figures out the command he’s probably not coming up. My guess is Johnson is who gets the nod but possibly Kendrick I highly doubt they bring up Velazquez because he threw about 300 innings in the Mexican league last year and has a tired arm, Slight exaggeration on the innings but he has thrown a ton.

Why is it that teams never really transition some of these starting pitchers into relievers, Owens has good enough stuff to be at least a reliever…. seems like they either see them as a starter or nothing at all
Bruin1012
Owens isn’t a real candidate to moved to reliever because his fastball command is so poor. There are plenty of players that are moved from starters to relievers usually they are two pitch pitchers that never really develop that third pitch or there stuff plays up in shorter outings. I don’t think that will be the case with Owens.
