The Padres announced that they have claimed right-hander Jose Valdez off waivers from the Angels and optioned him to Triple-A El Paso. In order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, San Diego transferred left-hander Christian Friedrich from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.
The 27-year-old Valdez threw just one inning with the Halos this season but logged 23 1/3 frames out of their bullpen in 2016. In 33 Major League innings between Detroit and Anaheim, Valdez has a 4.59 ERA with an unsightly 27-to-21 K/BB ratio and a 37.5 percent ground-ball rate. However, Valdez does boast a fastball that has averaged 95.5 mph in his big league career, and he’s logged an even 3.00 ERA in 105 Triple-A innings (albeit with similar control issues).

I Believe We Can Win
Yup, print the 2022 and 2023 world series tickets now! Padres vs. some AL team.
lesterdnightfly
The Padres’ inexorable World Series dynamics will begin only when Bethancourt finally clears waivers.
outinleftfield
Do you have that saved so you can cut and paste it every time the Padres sign or trade for someone?
Obviously, this guy was sent to AAA right away so the Padres think he is depth for the bullpen in case of injuries or trades not a part of the club in the majors. He does throw very hard and if he is called up he fits in well with guys like Maurer, Hand, Torres and Diaz that all throw mid to high 90s.
yoyo137
The Angels and Padres are going to be forever trading inconsequential players who are going to underperform for both of them it’s like Orange County/San Diego is the bermuda triangle for baseball talent

Considering with those two teams they have been to the World Series more times since 1980
Then the doyuers
vtadave
Are you sure about that?
bleacherbum
Incorrect. Since 1988, the Padres, Angels and Dodgers have all been to the World Series one time a piece. 98′ 02′ and 88′ respectively. So no “those two teams have not been to the World Series more”.
outinleftfield
Guess it depends on how you look at it. 2 is twice as many as one.

AJ Preller: “oh he used to play for the Cubs or Angels? Perfect. Sign him, I’m collecting them all.”
dvmwitt
Preller will probably DFA him soon and see if he can get him through waivers for AAA depth
bleacherbum
He already is in AAA, Padres claimed and optioned him. Says it right in the post.
lavey
He will be in AAA, but be on the 40 man roster. Preller will try to remove him and keep him in the organization is what was meant.
bleacherbum
Got it. He probably won’t clear however, waiver claims are still going off last year’s final records so the Padres have the 3rd highest priority. Gotta figure the 27 other teams who didn’t get a chance to claim him the first time around will try now if the Padres try to sneak him off the 40.
StayClassy
Lets bring him up to replace Weaver-
sddew
My grandmother was already hoping for the call to replace Weaver!

thank you padres, valdez is not a good player
