The Dodgers have placed lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu on the 10-day DL with what the organization is calling a hip contusion, per a club announcement. He’ll be replaced on the active roster by righty Josh Fields.
It seems that the injury was incurred when Ryu attempted a slide while running the bases, per skipper Dave Roberts (via J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group, on Twitter). The hope, though, is that he’ll miss just one start.
With an off-day coming up, Hoornstra notes, the move won’t really cost the Dodgers much at all — so long as Ryu is indeed ready to return after the minimum absence. But the team will be able to enjoy an added reliever while he’s off the active roster.
Ryu, 30, is off to quite a promising start after missing the vast bulk of the past two seasons. Through five starts, he owns a 4.05 ERA across 26 2/3 innings with a strong 9.8 K/9 against just 2.7 BB/9. He’s sitting between 89 and 90 mph with his average fastball, just under his prior level, and so far has managed a career-best 12.1% swinging-strike rate.

The Dodgers are gaming the new DL system. Basically using it as a way to roster a 26th man.

Smart, we can definitely use the extra reliever. Kershaw is the only starter than can consistently go 7 innings. Let’s keep our arms fresh!

Hardly gaming the system at all. Why do you think the minimum DL stay was reduced to 10 days in the first place?

It’s just one start he will miss

“The hope, though, is that he’ll miss just one start.” Hope is not certainty. In fact, it points to him missing more than one start but the Dodgers hope it will only be one.
Ryu is a glass doll and I doubt this is the only stint on the DL for him this season.

No this is just clear roster manipulation. Especially when Roberts followed it up by saying they only want Kersh coming close to 200 ip. It’s pretty self evident that Ryu wasn’t going to make 30 plus starts. With them being in the midst of 46 games in 48 days and an off day on Thursday this is an easy was to skip and limit. I also doubt this being his only trip to the DL seeing as they probably aren’t expecting, and shouldn’t be expecting, more than 150 inn.

Considering Ryu’s recent issues, I think the league could respect just being cautious with the move made.
Noah’s, Gray’s, amongst others should be respected decisions and not looked at as taking advantage of any DL situation.
Just my opinion

On the DL for a raspberry. Joe Thorton just played a whole playoff series with a torn ACL, MCL, and shredded meniscus. I’m not really a hockey fan, but baseball players look like total weenies in comparison with their blisters and strains and contusions.

While I see you’re point and agree with it mostly, baseball is a 162 game schedule with barely any off days. It’s more mentally taxing than physically. But I see why pitchers go on the DL with blisters. You can’t pitch well if you’re altering your delivery every pitch. Throwing a ball 100 times with a blister would be quite painful I would imagine.
