The Rockies have designated right-hander Miguel Castro for assignment, thereby clearing a roster spot for left-hander Kyle Freeland.
Castro joined the Rockies in July 2015 as part of their Troy Tulowitzki trade with the Blue Jays, who also gave up righty Jeff Hoffman and shortstop Jose Reyes in the deal. At the time, Castro ranked as one of the Jays’ best prospects, but his stock has obviously dropped since switching organizations. Now 22, Castro debuted in Toronto prior to the trade and has since posted a 6.12 ERA, 8.35 K/9 and 4.16 BB/9 in 32 1/3 innings between there and Colorado. The hard thrower totaled just 30 1/3 innings last year, 15 2/3 of which came at the Triple-A level. He was even worse there, as he yielded 18 earned runs on 21 hits and seven walks.

Padres- get rid of Zach Lee off the 40 man roster or kevin quackenbush
bleacherbum
Quackenbush needs to go, he is mediocre. Preller will always take the former top prospect when they become available via waivers. I’d keep Lee because this MLB rotation needs as many reinforcements in AAA as possible.
You have to figure that if any one of the 3 in Weaver, Chacin and Richard perform well than they will be dealt by the deadline, they have all been injured to some extent the last couple of years so they could always spend time on the DL, just too many uncertainties to not have at least a couple warm body former top prospects waiting in the wings in AAA and that’s what Lee and Jenkins will be waiting for.
thebighurt619
Between Kelly, Lamet, Rodriguez, Jenkins, Rienzo in triple a they have plenty of starter options to fill the void if/when richard, chacin, weaver are traded/cut.
I think Castro could be a good asset to develop being 22 years old.
bleacherbum
True, don’t forget about Lockett as well.
aussiejaysfan
Don’t think he can become free agent. Surely he would have options left?
layventsky
Options don’t matter if he’s being removed from the 40-man roster. Since he hasn’t been outrighted before (and doesn’t have the 5 years of MLB service time required to reject any minor league assignment), assuming he clears waivers, he’ll be outrighted. If they decide to call him up after that, they’ll need to clear a spot for him on the 40-man roster.
spider y banana
Missing the point. DFA is to clear the 40 man spot. Options have nothing to do with it. Someone will claim him or trade for him.
lowtalker1
Exactly
U gamble a risk to get them off the 40. Someone either claims them or they get optioned back to triple a/double a

Angels should pick him up!
