The Pirates have announced that they’ve placed corner infielder David Freese on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to Wednesday. To take his place on the active roster, they’ll select the contract of outfielder Danny Ortiz.
Freese has been out since Monday due to hamstring soreness. With the new 10-day DL, the Pirates could get him back on their roster within a week should his injury not prove serious. If he’s out for awhile, though, it would be a significant loss for the Bucs, who are already short regular third baseman Jung Ho Kang, who’s still in South Korea dealing with visa issues. Freese has been one of the Pirates’ most productive players this season, batting .321/.418/.536 thus far. Next up on the Pirates’ depth chart at third are Josh Harrison (the Bucs’ regular second baseman) and Phil Gosselin.
The 27-year-old Ortiz is a longtime Twins and Pirates farmhand who has never played in the big leagues. He has not hit well in either of his two seasons with the Bucs’ Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis, batting just .236/.275/.415 last season and .217/.266/.233 so far this year. He can, however, play all three outfield positions.

Keep playing Osuna and Gift, and give Hanson a chance too. Gosselin shouldn’t be on this team.

Dude… they just called up a 27 year old who has never played in the majors and is hitting .217/.266/.233 in AAA. I think the cabinet is pretty bare on infielders they believe are ready to play. Get rid of Gosselin who are you calling up?
Henry Limpet
They have better players than Ortiz. Chris Bostick is doing quite well in Triple a right now. Surprised he didn’t get the call.
They probably just felt like giving Ortiz his first taste of the big leagues since Freese is out retroactive to Wednesday, and should be back by the end of the coming week. If that’s the case, I don’t mind giving Ortiz the once in a lifetime chance. Josh Harrison is playing third anyway with Gift Ngoepe at second. Harrison & Ngoepe are hitting well and Ngoepe is a fielding wizard so it’s fun to watch him.
TJECK109
I believe they have better players as well but they don’t want to start service time running on players you think will be on your roster for a few years. Nothing is lost by bringing up a 27 year old
Henry Limpet
I agree, but I like Gosselin. I just think he should be at triple a getting at-bats until his hitting is up to speed.
Henry Limpet
Well, Jose Osuna went 4 for 4 last night, so who does Hurdle have playing right field tonight?
John Jaso who is 0 for 9 versus Dan Straily, the opposing pitcher.
Yeah, this team has no chance to make the playoffs this season.
Hang it up Pirates fans, your friendly Pirates management has no clue.
Your friendly owner is rolling in dough from his resort ‘seven springs’ which he owns, and people keep filling the seats at PNC Park.
Why should he spend a dime on good players when he’s doing so well otherwise?
TJECK109
It’s called a business. What’s wrong with an owner profiting from a team he purchased with HIS money. You should leave this board for people that understand baseball and business. Troll.
Henry Limpet
You are the troll.
Make everybody leave the board who don’t agree with you. Where are you from, Berkely?
I may not agree with someone, but I would never take away their freedom to speak.

If at any point you bring up Seven Springs when talking about the Pirates, you are a clueless yinzer lemming tool. Just FYI.

make a trade. anyone to blame is nutting. Goselin is the big offseason signing. he has the money. sooner or later the friendly contracts won’t work. Cole is gone after this year.

signing freese was great—yes. or maybe I’m just worried about another 20 years of darkness…

Kang, Marte, now Freese… Yikes. Hope he serves the minimum time and is OK. Luckily, minus “Let’s watch him ‘grow in the majors’ Glasnow”, the starting pitching has been pretty good. Should keep the Bucs in it for the most part–for now.

Harrison, Osuna, Ngoepe, and even Mercer have been stepping up lately. That’s nice to see.
