Giants outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. has undergone surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb, GM Bobby Evans tells reporters including Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News (via Twitter). He is expected to miss at least eight weeks of action.
Upton, 32, came to San Francisco on a minors deal after he failed to crack the Blue Jays’ Opening Day roster. He figured to be one of several players who could ultimately have played a role in the team’s still-unsettled mix in left field.
Instead, Upton is headed for a lengthy rehab. The veteran had enjoyed something of a renaissance after moving to San Diego from the Braves, where he failed to deliver on a big free-agent contract. But he struggled late last year with Toronto after a mid-season trade, slashing just .196/.261/.318 in 165 plate appearances down the stretch.

Bum now Upton? Bad day for the Gigantes. Hopefully we can stay competitive for the next 2 months.
thebighurt619
if upton jr was your hope to stay competitive your season was lost to begin with
dstuart
Better than Chris Marrero, Gorkys Hernandez, Jarrett Parker, and Mac Williamson lol
rxbrgr
I doubt that
dstuart
Doubt all you want, he’s a better option than what the Giants have currently.
layventsky
Not with a bad thumb, he’s not.

If Upton was a Dodger, than I’m sure dstuart would have agreed with you!
dstuart
If the Giants had the outfield depth the Dodgers did, this wouldn’t even be an issue.
johncena2016
Well the Giants are in a pickle

You got the who, what and where part Jeff Todd, but forgot the “how”. How did he hurt it? Come on Jeff! Journalism 101….
jmgara
You should be asking Baggerly that. He’s the one who posted it.
You forget that this site reports on all the rumors. It doesn’t investigate them or wait until the full story is known before posting about them. This site collates all the sport’s rumors in one place. It doesn’t have a staff of reporters to go out and gather the facts.

He’s on the Giants!!?
vacommish
Time to go grovel to Pagan and beg him to rejoin.
Nelson27
Thats no a bad idea. But Pagan is not going to sing for less the 5 million for the season
lesterdnightfly
No, and he’s not that good of a singer. Can hold a bat, but not a tune.
layventsky
Haha!
thegreatcerealfamine
They can always swing a trade for TEBOW!!
mikeyank55
Melvin in the best case scenario was a non producer anyway. They should flip him to the Mets who love cheapie deals
beauvandertulip
Honestly best shot the Giants have is to trade some time in June for either Avi Garcia or Melky. Whoever is cheaper I guess.

Angel Pagan is taking the year off with his family. So you know he is going to make a team pay to get him away from that, you would think. Their options are definitely not better then Upton though. A trade for a guy like avisail Garcia would make sense. White Sox would put a prime rib kind of price tag on him though
davidcoonce74
Prime rib in my local butcher is 13$/pound. So Garcia would cost like 3100 bucks at that rate. A great deal, truly.
