6:21pm: Fortunately, manager Dave Roberts says it’s only a “hairline” fracture for Forsythe, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com tweets. The expectation is he’ll only be sidelined for a few weeks.
5:56pm: The Dodgers have announced that infielder Logan Forsythe has been placed on the 10-day DL after being diagnosed with a fractured right big toe. Also heading to the DL, in his case with a strain of his right big toe, is Rob Segedin.
To take the now-open roster spots, Los Angeles has promoted a pair of reserve options. Infielder Chris Taylor will be joined by outfielder Brett Eibner in the majors. Presumably, Taylor will join fellow right-handed hitter Enrique Hernandez as options at second base against lefties, with Chase Utley carrying the load when facing right-handed pitching.

Clearly, the big question here is how long Forsythe will be out. There’s no word at this point as to whether there’s a current timeline. It’s possible that we’ll need to await a determination of a course of treatment before learning of any preliminary expectations.
Forsythe, 30, became the biggest new addition to the Los Angeles roster over the winter when he was acquired in a swap for top pitching prospect Jose De Leon. Thus far, he has performed as hoped. While he hasn’t yet hit a home run or swiped a bag, and his strikeouts are up, Forsythe is slashing a strong (albeit unusual) .295/.407/.341 over 54 plate appearances.

Dodgers need to get better cleats.

Forsythe was plunked. In fact two Dodgers were plunked last night.

Yea, I watched the game, Turner got it in the hand, Forsythe got it too. Freeland was all over the place as the game went on. The pitch that hit Turner just cut more than Freeland expected it to.

More and more injuries for LA. They just need some finger and toe guards or something

It’s the Dodgers. He’ll be out 10-12 weeks as it won’t heal correctly. See Ethier and nearly every other Dodger who goes on the DL. I predict we’ll see him after the break.

Latest report from the Dodgers is two weeks, if he’s willing to tape it up and play with some discomfort.

Time for Arenado to eat one in the ribs

It looked like Ryu threw a purpose pitch in between Forsythe and Turner getting hit but it wasn’t at Arenado.

Even with Logan F. LA was bad against LHP’s. Ryan Braun gets 5/10 rights in a month. LA & Mil can’t wait for Braun to demand an extension ala Phillips.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I feel as though if Braun was going to happen it would have happened already. He seems like the exact player they are trying to steer clear from. The older player with three years left after this who is solely a corner guy. I just don’t see this trade occurring. It’s easy for writers to try and connect the dots, but it doesn’t seem to be happening.
I am almost feel as they are more inclined to see how Guti performs upon his return and see what they get out of Kikè and Taylor, while also monitoring Thompson’s recovery. If they then need an option they might just go the expiring contract route or one that extends only a year out. I think the issue here is clear if you’re going to part with Puig you need a legitimate RF. This teams offense peripherally appears bad and one thing that is a major factor is the RISP optic. That also extends beyond just the handiness. Every team struggles at times with RISP, but if they clean that up they should be fine. As bad as the loss of Frosty is it’s encouraging to see signs of life from Kikè and Taylor. But again I’m not sure Braun is the best option that could be available, he’s just the sexy name when fans play the name game.
BlueSkyLA
Probably right, I also don’t see where Braun is in much of a position to demand an extension. His current contract extends through his age 37 season, and any team that does take on that contract has to know they are already buying at least a couple of out years, at least as a position player. Two weeks into the season doesn’t make for that kind of urgency. If the lineup is still struggling against LHP in July and everybody is healthy, then maybe.
jmi1950
The urgency is until May 24 Braun cannot block a trade to six teams one of which is LAD. After that date he has full 5/10 no trade rights. Therefore, Mil would be stupid to not trade him by that date. So if LA wants him now is the time. If they still can’t hit LHP’s in July the price to fix the problem will increase even if Mil is dumb enough to still have him.
BlueSkyLA
If that urgency falls on anyone, it is the Brewers, but I don’t see it as being overly urgent for them either. Not only would Braun be unlikely to exercise his 10-5 rights for the doubtful privilege of remaining with the Brewers, he isn’t in a great position to demand an extension.
jmi1950
That’s what they said about Brandon Phillips a few yrs ago.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
You’re assuming Braun and Phillips are the same people at the same parts of their careers. And also they want the same things. Just because Phillips had different priorities doesn’t mean such exist with Braun. And if he wants demands an extension on top of what he has it truly doesn’t mean he wants to leave Mil.
Which btw if you look and examine his NTL Braun essentially already has veto power over his destination. Incorporated in that list really is only the Dodgers, maybe the Giants although unlikely for multiple reasons, who might represent a match. The urgency for the Dodgers is to find out who can contribute this year. Getting players like Guti healthy should stabilize things and push everyone else down.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
*Means he truly doesn’t want
jmi1950
I’m not assuming anything. I am guarding against the worst case scenario, which is what any competent exec does in every situation. I agree that the Giants are the only other team on the list that could make an offer which is unlikely. That is why LAD should buy now while the pressure is on Mil that after May 24 making Braun happy becomes an added issue. If I was Freidman I would be harping on “remember Phillips”,” remember Lucroy”; “remember Dozier” take this deal before it goes away. Anyone who thinks the LAD’s will suddenly start hitting LHP’s bets on 40 to 1 shots at the track.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Again though you’re betting on the fact that after all the money spent management would ok another injury riddled contract with major baggage that is probably dead money 2 years from now. You’re also betting that the Dodgers prefer Braun to all the other potential pieces that may be available at the deadline. OFs that mash LH are a dime a dozen come deadline time.
All you’re working from is potential remnants of trade speculation from last trade deadline. Granted I believe Braun is a very good player but is he that tremendously great that you could potentially pass on the likes of Cutch, LoCain, JD Martinez etc.. Seems like they’re more than willing to allow Guti to get his feet wet, Frosty to heal, and Belllinger to take his time. Like I’ve said numerous times their target will probably be a RF or CF/RF hybrid with 1 to 2 years left on the deal. And they may be more than willing to pay the premium associated with that.
jmi1950
If it was so easy to find OF’s who mash LHP’s why did the LAD’s come up empty in July 2016 and still can’t hit LHP. Look up the stats. From April 1,2016 to now the LAD’s are dead last against LHP’s and it isn’t even close.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Why? Well essentially they didn’t address their needs. That seems to be pretty simple to answer. Their major offensive acquisition was a LH RF in which they platooned with Puig, who was so easily tied up and spun around. Kendrick’s bat slowed, they were reliant on Kikè ( who was extremely ineffective and took the major step back), SVS was injured and Thompson was lost. Not that I’m expecting a major return to 14 form from SVS or him even to remain on the active roster. Turner
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Well I guess I got cutoff my main point was there was a lot that occurred and a lot that went wrong in 16 along with the FO sincerely not addressing the issue. They are middle of the pack in OBP and OPS along with WRCplus v LH. The main problem is their ability to capitalize with RISP. They’ve had no shortage of base runners. What is encouraging is some signs of life that weren’t available in 16. I never said they didn’t need help, but the production of Guti and Puig will determine the extent of it. It just begs to reason if Braun was going to happen it probably would have happened already. I just wonder about managements willingness to add another extended contract after the commitments made this offseason.
jmi1950
The current Lux Tax system began in 2003.
From 2003 to 2016 the NYY paid 304MM in Tax.
The LAD paid 113 MM ==all in the last 4 yrs and with a 244MM payroll this yr will again be the highest taxed. By comparison the Red Sox from 2003 to 2016 paid 25 MM less than 2 MM a yr. & will be under this yr.
No other team pd more than 5.4MM total over those 14 yrs. Having committed this amount of $$$$$$ and not wining the WS since 1988 it makes no sense to worry about the $$$ for their best chance to win. We know in 7-16 they thought that best chance was Braun. If nothing changes the result will be the same in 2017.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Again who is saying nothing is changing. It seems to me you’re arguing as if the only way to win is to obtain Braun. As if he won’t be there at the deadline or more so a multitude of comparable piece won’t be there. All I’m saying is the FOs reported goal was to reset the tax and become self sustaining while putting a competing club out on the diamond. And the numbers you illustrated involving paid out threshold tax illuminates the reason why.
In essence you’re advocating for the Brewers to panic and sell Braun for nothing. And the Dodgers to panic and take on that entire contract. Except nobody is going to panic at this juncture, because at the end of the day Braun has no leverage if he wants an opportunity to compete for a WS. The Brewers also have no leverage until the deadline. The dodgers still have Bellinger in their back pocket and more importantly an area that’s easily filled at the deadline.
jmi1950
We are going around in a circle. If it is so easy to fix at the deadline, why didn’t they fix it last yr? If they want Braun work out the $$$ & the players; if not fine, go out and get someone else. All I am saying is they were historically bad against LHP last yr and it is the same this yr. That’s too big a sample to ignore. If Mil is smart and heeds the risk of 5/10 rights Braun will be gone and the price for other players will go up.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I understand what your saying and I respect it. But the fact remains they didn’t fix it at the deadline and there were a multitude of reasons that can be attributed to. Mil is not in a situation where they absolutely need to trade for spare parts especially considering the performance/cheap Thames contract and their absolute rock bottom payroll. Braun’s still the figure head and puts butts in the seats. He’s also said he’s amendable to move to 1st something that a rebuilding team can play with as their glut of OF prospects start to arrive on the scene. The Dodgers also aren’t in the best position to meet the SP prospect needy Brewers demands at this point, especially with JDL donning a Rays jersey and Oaks looking as though he might be a much needed swing man type. So in theory a trade sounds matchup perfect sure, but it doesn’t all line up in reality.
BlueSkyLA
At least not now, as I think you are saying, and I agree. Later a third team could become involved that might offer the right pieces to get Braun on the move to the Dodgers if they find they need him. In the meantime they are keeping that powder dry, which I see as wise. The Dodgers are actually in a stronger position to deal with the Brewers after Braun gets his 10-5 rights since it seems pretty clear that he would block a trade to a number of teams but not to the Dodgers.
jmi1950
Right now Braun cannot block a trade to six teams including LA. After May 24 he can block any trade period. Only you think that puts LA in a stronger position.
