The Mets enjoyed a solid Opening Day win today on the back of a strong performance from starter Noah Syndergaard. But there are some new health concerns for the team’s pitching staff — though their gravity isn’t yet clear.
Syndergaard himself departed after six innings with a blister, as Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News writes. It’s not expected to be a major issue, but the team is looking to get out ahead of things by giving him an added day of rest. Blisters can turn into significant injuries, to be sure, but there’s no reason at this point to think it’s more than a minor issue to be managed.
There’s more worry with lefty Steven Matz, who is already on the DL with elbow inflammation. The team’s position remains that he has been cleared of structural damage, as Marc Carig of Newsday reports, but Matz provided further information on the issue. He says that he has been diagnosed with a flexor tendon strain, which would seem to be a distinct injury from the bone chips that he had surgically removed over the offseason. Regardless, his timeline will surely be dictated by how he feels and what kind of progress the doctors observe, but the news adds to the 25-year-old’s growing list of arm ailments in his young career.
In theory, any such gaps in pitching coverage were to be covered by Seth Lugo, who filled in with aplomb last year. But as John Harper of the New York Daily News reports, manager Terry Collins hinted after today’s game that there may be some concern with Lugo’s status. “We lost Seth Lugo today for a period of time,” said Collins, who later added that “it’s going to be a couple of weeks, for sure,” before Lugo is able to return. There are no known details to this point, but clearly the Mets are anticipating that they won’t be able to use the 27-year-old for at least some fairly significant stretch.
In light of these new concerns, Collins stressed the need to maintain the health of the current five-man rotation, which explains the proactive move to get Syndergaard extra rest. As Harper notes, resurgent righty Rafael Montero — who’s currently operating out of the MLB bullpen — now seems to occupy a position of much greater importance than had been anticipated. If there’s a silver lining to this early test of the organization’s pitching depth, it’s that they had so much to begin with, so the current roster is still stocked with high-quality starters.

At this point, the depth is pretty much gone. Wheeler won’t last the year – and Montero is a big unknown. Lots riding on Harvey’s recovery and on Gsellman proving he wasn’t a fluke last year.
If it fails, the Mets will be selling bats in July: Bruce, Duda, Granderson and Walker.
lowtalker1
No one is going to bite on Bruce. They have tried
thegreatcerealfamine
If they won’t get a bite on Bruce..they’ll get even less nibbles for the other three!
kbarr888
Doesn’t it depend on his performance through July 1st? Bruce isn’t that far removed from solid production, and he did hit 33 HR’s, 99 RBI’s, .506 SLG, .815 OPS in 2016…..with a 21% K rate. All still pretty decent offensive numbers for a power guy.
Kemp = 34 HR’s, 108 RBI’s, .499 SLG, .803 OPS…. 24% K rate
McCutchen = 24 HR’s, 79 RBI’s, .433 SLG, .766 OPS….21% K rate
Franco = 25 HR’s, 88 RBI’s, .427 SLG, .733 OPS … 28% K rate
Brixton
Kemp is literally the worse defender in the sport
tylerall5
Walker will definitely get interest.
kbarr888
True, but his bat is still serviceable. Bruce is a much better defender than Kemp. And he walked 3 times yesterday. At least Bruce has a Brain in his head…….and he’s smart enough to know that he needs to become a more patient hitter.
The point here is that there WILL be interest in Bruce. Fans are so quick to spout crap about players without looking at the data / facts. If Bruce hits 15 HR’s by July 1st, teams will be calling…..Period.
sagbagels
i think you mistaken depth for pitching quality…
btamm
its day one and this person is ready to sell. lets see what our season looks like in August!

What about Gilmartin

Can’t understand the Day 1 panic. NS is common injury. At worse he misses a start. Matz is about a 50% of the year pitcher. But there are always guys that didn’t get signed floating around to whether the storm. I do say they should have resigned Bartolo! He was a fan fav who at his age put people in the seats and he is still good.
MrMet19
He’s on the braves. Colon and Johnson will be back by the deadline, almost guaranteed.
JT19
Rich Hill suffered from a blister last year and missed a couple of starts. Depends on where the blister is really.

Classic Mets
virag828
Duda just hit a lefty to open the game up enjoy the win.
sagbagels
the braves? lets see him do that against kershaw,
hojostache
Speaking of teams with a ton of injury question marks in their SP….
I’d take the Mets in a 5 or 7 game series v. LAD.
frankthetank1985
Calm down everyone. Sheesh. Noah will be fine. Matz we knew wouldn’t be healthy all year. Lugo is unclear but so was going to be his production. There was no guarantee he was going to duplicate last years small sample. Just let the season start to play out and see what happens. The Mets were “done” majority of last season too, only to get the wild card spot with “no name” pitchers and players. Day one was a win. Take it for now and see how April plays out.

I’ll say it again:
1. They should have brought back Barto -He will outlast most of their starters that they have and you never have enough pitching.
2. The WBC is a MISTAKE. (at the time of Spring Training when it occurs). These players are just starting to get into shape when they all hustle off to their WBC teams and pitch, hit and throw at full-throttle before their bodies are fully ready..
If Montero blows up on them they will be PHCKED.
lesterdnightfly
So Sandy should have used his influence to cancel the entire WBC. Another epic failure by the Mets’ FO. At least other teams had players get hurt too, so Sandy was smart to downsize the competition. He also allowed some other teams’ players to get hurt in Spring Training. Wise man !
Ha.
If players don’t get themselves in shape, or stay in shape, or if they are already damaged, they’ll get hurt whether it’s in the WBC, Spring Training, or the bathtub.
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
Nope, that’s not what I said. I think MLB should rethink the start time of the WBC. and not have it commence in the third week of spring training. Clear enough for you now?…Good.
lesterdnightfly
Such Gracious Clarity !
So if they move the WBC to another time of the year, but a Met still gets hurt, will you promise to accept it?
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
Sounds like a duel. I am saying the timing of the WBC is too early in the season and these guys try to compete at a mid/late-season level. Aks Mar Texeira what I think.
lesterdnightfly
So when would you hold the WBC?
As to “Mar Texeira”, please give me his contact info and I will Aks him.
sagbagels
lol how triggered are you…they still have depth…
El Duderino
Paging Mr. Fister. Paging Mr. Fister.

The Barves paid a premium for Bartolo. He was one of the best available pitchers this past off season, and he cashed in (again) at 40-something.The Mets could only realistically offer him a starting role for part of this season anyway.
lesterdnightfly
That’s true, but what current Mets starter inspires the confidence that they’ll stay healthy all season? I can’t think of one who doesn’t have some kind of yellow-flag injury history.
sagbagels
you’d have to blame the training staff and pitching coach….
also they owe you (the fans) much confidence considering you (the fans) are also the one wanting to see pitchers throwing 95+.
lesterdnightfly
Not my point.
Addressing hojostache, anyways.
hojostache
I agree with you 100%, but it’s unrealistic to expect Colon to pass up solid $ on a 2yr deal AND almost 100% certainty that he’ll have a spot in the rotation. He wants to pass (forget the guys name!) for all-time wins, which he can only do starting.
Trust me, Big Sexy is one of my all-time favorite MLB players, but it just wasn’t a fit (no pun intended) for the Mets this year.
He’s pitching tonight…hopefully he gets a great ovation from all fans in attendance.
sagbagels
this is what happens when your pitching coach is in love with throwing a slider
lesterdnightfly
Because no other team has pitchers who throw sliders….?
sagbagels
i guess you havent seen the team videos of dan warthen pushing and teaching all his pitchers “his slider”
sagbagels
matz never had good mechanics. he has some weird transition pushing off the mound and landing where he puts a ton of strain on his arm…
sagbagels
im sure mets are top 10 in injuries in the mlb for the past 20 years…isnt it time they fire ray ramirez?
mikeyank55
Leadership begins at the top. Why protect “TC”? It’s his team that continues to burn through pitchers like men’s underwear. A ml manager should protect his staff. “TC” is so insecure in his position, he milks the staff by pushing them past sound limits.
The season is young. This story line is old and will continue until cheap Jeff sucks it up and agrees to pay two mgrs in one season.
sagbagels
while i agree with this and that TC does one of the worst bullpen management jobs there is….ray ramirez has been with the mets for decades and injuries have been a critical issue with the mets for decades…
lesterdnightfly
“Why protect “TC”? It’s his team that continues to burn through pitchers like men’s underwear.”
Hey, if TC likes to burn men’s underwear, he needs to have Chris Sale cut them up beforehand. Makes a quicker fire…..
Tiger_diesel92
Tommy john anyone? Matz is good but he’s stupid to continue pitching through pain in his elbow.
sagbagels
historically he is injury prone and soft
lesterdnightfly
I guess removing your bone chips does make you “soft”.
hojostache
I believe he has started at least 20 games for the past 4 seasons (combined minors & majors). He definitely spends his fair share of time on the DL, but every team would take 20 games per year at <3.20ERA (in his albeit short MLB career).
