8:20pm: There’s internal concern that a two-month estimated absence may be on the low side, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney tweets.
6:03pm: From the club’s perspective, there’s no real timetable at present, manager Bruce Bochy tells reporters including Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area (Twitter link).
4:00pm: The initial expectation is that Bumgarner will be sidelined for six to eight weeks, per Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). It’s not clear, though, whether that figure includes the time that the lefty will presumably require to ramp up and move through a rehab assignment.
3:39pm: Giants ace Madison Bumgarner is headed to the 10-day DL after injuring himself in a dirt bike accident, the team announced. He is said to have suffered bruised ribs along with “a grade one or two left shoulder AC sprain.”
Fortunately, it seems there’s no reason to worry for Bumgarner’s long-term well-being. He has already been released from the hospital. But from an on-field perspective, the news certainly looks to be concerning.
To be sure, there’s little in the way of detail as to just how the injury will impact Bumgarner. For now, it seems he’ll rest before being reevaluated next week.
The injury is not a common one for a pitcher, but it does happen to quarterbacks with regularity. Treatment and timing will obviously depend upon the final assessment of the severity, though it seems that surgery isn’t likely to be needed for a grade one or two sprain.
Obviously, the fact that the injury occurred to Bumgarner’s throwing arm will be a significant factor. That’ll not only increase the risks of rushing back, but will presumably call for a lengthier timeline — including, perhaps, a rehab stint.
Bumgarner had been himself on the hill in the early going, continuing his outstanding track record of production. (To date, Bumgarner owns a 2.99 ERA with 8.9 K/9 against 2.1 BB/9 over 1,242 2/3 career innings.) Now, he’s headed to the DL for the first time in his career.
What makes the southpaw special, though, isn’t just his effectiveness. It’s the fact that he has had a flawless record of durability. Bumgarner has made at least 31 starts and thrown at least 200 innings in each of his first six full seasons in the majors. Now, it seems those streaks are at risk.
The Giants have options on hand to fill in, with Ty Blach seemingly likely to step into the rotation and Chris Stratton coming up to provide another arm. But there’s no replacing Bumgarner, who is already a legendary figure in the organization due to his incredible postseason efforts.
wiggysf
Ok, we’re officially screwed.
sufferforsnakes
Yep.
BusterMove
Nope. Minor setback. Better now than October. Still, UGH.
ric7744
The biggest setback is Evans keeps putting non talented players like Gorky’s and Marerro and now Stratton on the roster.
orangefriday
1) It’s only 2 or 3 games.
2) It’s early.
3) The offense has been cold when he’s on the mound anyway.
Ry.the.Stunner
6-8 weeks is a little more than “only 2 or 3 games”
orangefriday
If you bothered to do the math, I literally posted my comment a minute before the update at 4PM CDT.
natsgm
because people look at the time stamp of your comment then back at the article and do math….
orangefriday
I guess it’s easier to be condescending, eh?
James7430
Boy there’s a lot of people on this place that get their feelings hurt easily. I highly doubt RytheStunner meant anything by that.
davbee
It’s even easier to get all defensive apparently.
orangefriday
Has less to do with my feelings being hurt and more to do with someone not checking the timestamp before commenting.
James7430
Duly noted. Everyone, new requirement for MLBTR is before you post, you have to check the time stamps of posts and the updates before you comment on orangefriday’s comments. He would really appreciate it.
orangefriday
I appreciate the PSA, James, but it was my bad. I shouldn’t have made such a careless assumption in my original post, knowing full well there would be people like you who would be ready to pounce all over it.
jd396
Good god, I hope all you guys are under the age of 14
orangefriday
I think JD wants to join our Little League team.
JKB 2
Why does someone need to check time stamps before commenting. Really?
orangefriday
Is it really that hard for you guys to grasp simple concepts?
Because information changes. That’s why.
alexgordonbeckham
Yeah just because he is put on the 10-day dl doesn’t mean it won’t be longer. The update now says 6-8 weeks.
orangefriday
I just started watching baseball yesterday, so thanks for the tip. /s
alexgordonbeckham
Well, you are the one who said he’d only miss 2 starts for something that sounded a lot more serious….
10-day dl =/= out only 10 days
orangefriday
Technically, I said 2 or 3. I realize the 10-day DL =/= out only 10 days, but it’s MadBum we’re talking about here. Besides that, as I already mentioned above, I posted that comment a minute before the update at 4PM, so why are you still stuck on this?
LADreamin
The question should be why are you so defensive? People make mistakes all the time, it’s ok. Just move forward.
orangefriday
Wouldn’t you be a little defensive if you were outnumbered 6-1? But you’re right. People make mistakes. Even me. Let’s move on.
NickinAtl
My God, please go awy
orangefriday
What do you think your comment accomplished exactly?
chesteraarthur
is your avatar the skull from doom?
orangefriday
Yes sir. Kudos for noticing.
Connorsoxfan
For the record, I hate people who make snippy comments regarding something that was said before the information was available. And yeah, I’d be defensive if I was being trashed for saying something completely reasonable based on the information given at the time. If someone says what is 2 3, and you say 5, and they say oh wait also -1, YOURE WRONG! You’d get a little defensive.
JFree47
Are ya silly? He’s still gonna send it
The Morning After Pillar
Ha!!

We are more screwed, because of Evans roster decisions.

Speechless
Phillies2017
I took four things from this
1.) MadBum is a savage
2.) I think thats actually a violation of his contract
3.) The Giants season just ended (already in last place with LAD, COL and ARI playing well)
4.) Bet they wish they had Blackburn still
adshadbolt
They didn’t need Blackburn they will just call up beede now.
Nelson27
They still have Ty Blach, he van step up!!!
Fentress
Fond as I am of Madbum, this was stupid and selfish, and lets down his teammates and his fans.
ghost of harambe
Yea coz he totally meant to injure himself
Senioreditor
Dirt bike riding during the season???? Really??????

he’s a Southern Boy, that’s what we do.

seamaholic 2
He’s not from Texas. He’s from nowheresville North Carolina. Like, a town of 50 people or something.
whatever
Who doesn’t get hurt dirt biking? Geez.
Cam
I think he’s coming from the angle of he shouldn’t be on a dirt bike at all during the season. And he’s right to say that.
PBABowler27
He is not right to say that. This is the same thing as Trevor Bauer getting hurt with his drone. It’s probably something he does everyday, and this just happened to be a freak accident. Saying he shouldn’t ride his bike during baseball season is ridiculous.
Senioreditor
Using a drone and getting injured is NOT forseeable. Riding a dirt bike and getting injured is. If you disagree you’re but being ignorant or oppositional for no reason at all other to convince everyone of your Ignorance.
natsgm
Well, he wasn’t just riding his bike unless the reports are wrong. He was riding his DIRT bike, suggesting he was dirt biking, which carries a little more risk than playing with a drone or biking around town.
Completely reasonable to ask what the heck he was thinking and to suggest that he shouldn’t be doing that during the season.
Ironman_4life
If I’m paying someone $25 million a year you bet I can tell them to wipe their butt with their non-pitching arm.
hodor 3
Now you’ve become delusional, which we understand as it happens with all Sox fans sooner or later since they’re born that way.
liamsfg
Naw man, its all in the contract. He agreed to something in return for money. He has to honor that to get payed, the rest is subjective.
I don’t know the details of his contract, but if he violated it then there’s no way to defend that. Whether he’s a “southern boy” or not isn’t an excuse for breaking that agreement.
Bumgarner will own up to it anyway, like a man.
timpa
Unless Madison got approval from the Giants he likely did violate his contract.
Every MLB contract has standard clauses banning certain activities which could result in injury. Boxing and Wrestling are banned and any injury could result in loss of contract or contract being made non-guaranteed.
Skiing/auto racing/motorcycle racing are banned unless player gets written approval from their team. Many other activities are listed but teams often prohibit different things. Some teams even prohibit piloting a plane or being in a small plane. Things like pickup basketball/flag or beach football are also things which a player would need written approval for or a team could void or non-guarantee a contract if injury occurs.
Calipers
Ha. True that.
gmenfan
From local (SF) reports, the Giants front office likely knew about this and turned a blind eye.
Even if they didn’t know, a Top 10 pitcher under control for three more years at $12M per year … no contracts are being voided here.
Dearns
You think top brass are OK with him riding his dirt bike when they don’t want him in the home run derby because of the risk of injury?
CubsRule08
That’s not even the point. The main reason is that he’s doing something that could lead to an injury. The Giants cannot be happy about any of this, at all
dresman92
Wonder if the Giants may opt on not paying him. Insurance wont usually pay for none playing injuries.
hiflew
Showering COULD lead to an injury. Driving a car COULD lead to an injury. Should he stop doing those things during the season as well? The guy had a day off and had some fun. He has probably ridden a dirt bike 1000 times in his life without injury. He had an accident. It happens.
hiflew
Do you REALLY want to alienate your best pitcher by being petty? It’s not like Bumgarner intentionally hurt himself so he could sit back and get paid. Would a team refuse to pay a player that was injured in a car accident on the way to Taco Bell after the game? That is a non-playing injury also. And eating at Taco Bell is almost as dangerous as dirt bike riding.
Cam
Showering and travel are essential parts of daily lives. Dirt biking is not.
Find a better example.
11Bravo
Dumb examples. You COULD get hurt doing daily minutiae activities like showering or even getting out of bed. But going dirt biking significantly increases those odds of getting hurt. I can get hurt swimming in a pool but my chances of getting hurt increase if I go swimming in the shark infested waters. Get it now?
liamsfg
Showering and using transportation are both required. Dirt-biking is not…
Patick L
I strained my right forearm in the shower. Had to use my left for awhile which felt weird.

mack22 3
Geeezzz take it easy Giants fans, MadBum was blowing off some steam for a start of a bad season. AZ sux, and the Rox have so many injuries I doubt they go far, SD? yeah whatever. The only one you have to worry about is LA, and they aren’t off to a blazing start. It will be SF & LA down the stretch, you guys know it and so do we.
dodgerfan711
Dbacks and rockies are both for real. No one worrys about the Giants anymore. They have no offense, a mediocre bullpen and a weak rotation after cueto now
sfgfan10121416
Uh….how many rings to the dbacks or rockys have? 1 and that was in 2001…and it wasn’t the rockys….they have 0!!!!
sfgfan10121416
Oh yeah and the doggies last ring was in 1988 when oral sheshiser had a freak year!!!!!
davidcoonce74
Really? Get your stupid homophobia out of here. ESPN comment boards may be more your speed.
chesteraarthur
What do past championships have to do with 2017 team performance?
Cubs didn’t win for 108 years, they still won in 2016. A team’s past results do not matter for current or future seasons.
LADreamin
It’s all cyclical. When had the Giants won anything before 2010? You act like teams can’t go from not winning to winning.
dodgerfan711
Rings from the past have no impact on 2017. Even the giants 2014 title is irrelevant. And the “doggies” do you just make names up as you go along. How about talking about the team on the field instead of making up awful names. Oh and just for the sake of it you say orel had a “freak year” yet anyone can make a case that the giants 12/14 titles were flukes.
pustule bosey
true, looks like we need to look out for the cubs in 2124-
dresman92
That was a fun year of baseball. I hate the Dodgers but Oral was amazing that year to watch.
cxcx
How is “Sheshiser” homophobic? It’s sexist if anything, making fun of Orel by calling him a woman, not by calling him gay.
You comment seems to insinuate that gays are womanly, which might actually be homophobia…
sportznut1000
i agree with you giants are in trouble but a weak rotation after cueto? compared to who? the dbacks and rockies dont exactly carry a world series staff either. off the top of my head isnt it chatwood, gray and a rookie anchoring the rockies staff while the dbacks are hoping for the 2015 shelby miller to come back. they have corbin and ray. i think ill still take cueto, samardjiza and moore. then a weak bullpen yes but you could argue its still much better than the dbacks and fernando rodney as closer
TheMichigan
Man you clearly have not seen the Rox play bro, Reynolds is doing fine in Desmond’s place, and Parra is also doing fine with Dahl on the shelf. Along with that killer bullpen, they have a real shot. SF has no shot rn with that trash bullpen subpar offense and now mediocre rotation.
BlueSkyLA
Might have tried punching a wall instead. Would have been safer.
TradeAcuna
I’m not even a Dbacks fan but glad this might help them out this year. Sorry, big fan of Shelby and hope he succeeds so i can stop hearing of clueless people continuing to criticize the Swanson trade. Probably in the minority of Braves fans who thinks this way but i want this trade to work out for them as well.
Priggs89
“big fan of Shelby and hope he succeeds so i can stop hearing of clueless people continuing to criticize the Swanson trade.’
That moment when you believe that every single person besides you is clueless…
TradeAcuna
Yeah, all Braves have right now coming out of this deal is reassurance. They are still a bad team with Swanson. Until he produces and the team wins, this trade is still up for grabs of who won it.
Priggs89
All they got for a good (but far from great) pitcher was a 23 year old shortstop that was the #1 overall pick out college that is universally regarded as a franchise cornerstone? Sucks to be the Braves I guess.
I guess we can also just forget about the starting CF that they got as well.
TradeAcuna
A franchise cornerstone that has yet to be or yet to prove he will be a cornerstone. As i said, and this applies for all prospects, reassurance. Fans want reassurance and they are getting it! Maybe the Braves will be a .500 team in 2020. Until then, all Braves fans have to cheer about is the potential of what these players can be than what they are. I mean all overhyped prospects have success right?
Priggs89
And what did Braves fans have to cheer about before the trade? A 67 win team with a good middle of the rotation pitcher occupying the #2 spot. You’d rather have that than a 23 year old Dansby Swanson? I sure wouldn’t.
You’re acting like Shelby Miller is the difference between them being a winning team or losing team. The reality is that he would not be making much of a difference for the current Braves team, and their future would look significantly worse than it does now. And you continuously forget to mention Ender Inciarte, who arguably provided more value in his first year than Shelby Miller did in his only year in Atlanta. If you think they’re in a worse place than they were before making the trade, I don’t know what to say to you. Even if you want to call Shelby/Ender a wash value-wise (and they aren’t – Ender is more valuable), anything Dansby does going forward will be icing on the cake.
And no, all overhyped prospects don’t have success, obviously. But there are some that have a much lower bust potential than others, and Dansby Swanson falls in that group. I, and every team in baseball (minus the Diamondbacks under their previous regime), would happily take my chances on Dansby being more valuable than Shelby Miller going forward. Throw Ender Inciarte in there, and it’s a no brainer.
TradeAcuna
Where did i say the Braves are not better off after the trade? I don’t care if they are better off now or not because it doesn’t matter until they actually field a good team and win. Until then, I’ll be waiting and you can keep reassuring yourselves about the potential!
Speaking of Ender, until he learns to be a lead off hitter and not try to hit for power every at bat, he will just be another all defense CF!
chesteraarthur
Wait, I’m confused. You are arguing that it doesn’t matter if a team is better until they field a good team? How do you think a team goes from bad to a good team, exactly?
I’ve made my opinion pretty clear that braves fans in general over rate their team and players on here, but they are certainly moving in the right direction even if I think they are much further away than some of their fans do.
That front office has made a few questionable decisions in their time there, the Shelby Miller trade was not one of them. At all.
TradeAcuna
It is perception though. People are assuming they will be better based on the potential of what the players can be than what they are. That is where reassurance comes in.
It is nice to have a great farm system on paper and all but until they win games that matter, i don’t care how good they can be on paper.
Priggs89
He had a .351 OBP last year with a .381 SLG. He walked almost as many times as he struck out (45:68 in 131 games). What more do you expect from your leadoff hitter?
Again, you were going to be waiting regardless. Shelby Miller is/was not a legitimate difference maker on this team; Dansby Swanson might be. Why would you want them to be slightly better now (if at all) with Shelby Miller and have a worse looking future. That makes absolutely no sense. This is how great teams are built, unless you’re in a giant market – and even then, the Cubs and Yankees went/are going through this same process.
chesteraarthur
I can understand that point. But building a good team isn’t just a binary bad to good thing. They are generally moving in the right direction. What would you have them do differently? Or are you just saying that you disagree with the overly positive vibe around the team?
Priggs89
“It is nice to have a great farm system on paper and all but until they win games that matter, i don’t care how good they can be on paper.”
You’re starting to sound like Kenny Williams.
How do you think the Braves should be building the team? Overpaying free agents?
chesteraarthur
Dansby Swanson has always been seen as more of the high floor safe player than a true difference maker.
chesteraarthur
“You’re starting to sound like Kenny Williams.”
“How do you think the Braves should be building the team? Overpaying free agents?”
Use their top pick to draft athletes. Doesn’t matter if they have baseball skills. ATHLETES! – KW team building strategy strategy
TradeAcuna
Priggs89, you keep assuming that i don’t like the trade the Braves made. I never said that. What I’m claiming is, at the end of the day, Swanson is not a guarantee and neither is Inciarte. This trade might just turn out to be not as lopsided as many think, especially if Miller helps the Dbacks make the postseason, which was a prime reason they made it in the first place. Yes, they mortgaged their future, but your future is perception anyway and nothing is guaranteed.
TradeAcuna
“They are generally moving in the right direction. What would you have them do differently? Or are you just saying that you disagree with the overly positive vibe around the team?”
The latter but mostly because i don’t get hyped over prospects as others do.
chesteraarthur
No. Nothing is guaranteed. But the Braves came out on the end that has the higher probability of being a success. So again, I’m not sure I get your point?
TradeAcuna
My point is lets wait for the success to actually translate on the field.
chesteraarthur
I disagree with your view, but I can understand it. Prospects get both over-hyped and undersold at the same time. I can certainly understand having your reservations, but you have to at least admit they are moving in the right direction to having a sustainable team.
Obviously, it might not work, but really, what other option is there for them?
chesteraarthur
“My point is lets wait for the success to actually translate on the field.” Before what? Saying the braves are good? Evaluating the trade? Other?
If you mean evaluating the trade, that’s not really necessary, imo. Simply because that trade package should have returned more for the Dbacks at the time it was made and certainly could have returned more for the dbacks this offsesason, so in that sense, it was a positive for them.
TradeAcuna
Fair point on the last statement. I guess I’m tired of people buying into managements PR moves like signing Dickey, and Colon. Stop pretending you are “trying” to compete and either put out a good team or let the younger guys play. They are a bad team regardless in 2017
!
TradeAcuna
nm
dodgerfan711
I understand wanting to give trades time until you judge them but come on. The shelby miller trade is a disaster for AZ. Ender incirate has already gave the braves far more then shelby miller has. I would take a top SS prospect over a project #3 at best starter anyday. The braves goal is not to win until the rebuild is complete and they are still a few years away
TradeAcuna
While you wait for the rebuild to be complete, I’d be waiting for a winning team which might be well past the “projected date.” Again, enjoy the enjoys of overhyped prospects.
dodgerfan711
Swanson like any prospect does need to prove he is worth the hype. With that being said in the situation i would take him any day of the week over shelby miller. If the braves traded swanson for jose quintanna or chris sale and people freaked out you would be right. But as far as comparing the trade with the dbacks its not even close. The braves fleeced them
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Nothing wrong with having fun, the problem is it’s during the season
I dunno, I am a bit surprised but still
davidcoonce74
Meh. Baseball is the guy’s job, but he gets a life too. Sean Rodriguez was just driving around and will miss the season after a car crash. If Bumgarner had some clause in his contract about this that would be a different story, but I doubt he did.
outinleftfield
It’s in the standard player contract. He would have had to specifically ask for a waiver that allowed him to ride a motorcycle (or skydive, or ride a bull, or any other dangerous activity) in order for this to not be in violation of his contract.
davidcoonce74
He signed a massively undervalued extension so maybe he did ask for it? The Giants aren’t making any noise about it so they don’t seem to care.

koz16
This may cost him some money – at least for the medical bills – if he violated the terms of his contract.
agentx
Another non-pitching injury to a start pitcher, another reason the NL should have the DH!!
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
How would the DH rule have prevented this injury, I have to ask…
thegreatcerealfamine
If DH stood for Designated Harley
chesteraarthur
I think it’s a joke. People make claims that the NL should have a DH when stupid things happen that a pitcher could easily have done in fielding practice, etc.
agentx
You are correct, President Arthur.
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
I feel better then… I couldn’t for the LIFE of me figger that one out…
Senioreditor
Imagine if Puig had done this. Madison would be the first to lay blame on him for a stupid act. The Giants should suspend him for part of the time he’s gone as a punishment for stupidity and to set an example that no one on the team is above the rules.
sportznut1000
yeah that would go over really well when the giants try to extend his team friendly contract in a couple years. you just bite the bullet in this case. he basically carried the giants to a title in 2014.
gmenfan
“Hey Madison, despite helping us win two championships, and single-handedly winning us a third, because you made a questionable choice to blow off some steam because we can’t assemble an offense that provides league average run production when you’re on the mound, we’re going to be petty and suspend you.” – Giants Front Office
Um, no.
Yeah, in our Kindergarten world, the “nobody is above the rules” rhetoric plays just fine, but this isn’t the same. Punishing him with either pay or suspensions makes zero sense. He’s a competitor and he knows that his actions have let his teammates dlwn. As bad as Giants fans feel about this, I’m sure that nobody feels worse about it than Bumgarner.
nentwigs
Probably went out dirt biking to work off the frustration of pitching his butt off, yet having a record of 0-3.. Know why there is no talk of contract extension? He’s had enough of the Giants not backing him up on the field and when the current contract is up, he’s leaving for a contender rather than a pretender. Mr. Evans, you had better get some updated GM lessons from Sabean, because you are not getting it done. At some point you need to rely on home grown talent to actually perform for your team instead of serving as trade fodder. Is the team THAT much better with the trading away of: Duvall, Heston, Bickford, Susac, Duffy, Blackburn, Mejia and the Pink Slips given to Pagan, Blanco, Lopez, Castillo, Romo, Nathan, and the waiving ofplayers such as Adrianza, Smith, Broadway, Tejada???? Green,
bleacherbum
Good. I think everyone who isn’t a Giants fan hates this guy. He is disrespectful on the field. Always walking around with his chest puffed out like that guy in the club who is taunting everyone because he wants to get in a fight. The snot rockets he blows all over the mound is freaking disgusting, I don’t know but guys with this type of attitude get no remorse when accidents like this happen. I will always remember last year Wil Myers took a borderline pitch from Bumgarner that was called a strike and he looked back to ask the ump where it was at and if he was gonna call that for the rest of the game, Bumgarner started barking at Myers and the benches cleared. He is so good that he doesn’t need to do that kind of stuff. Reminds me of when Clemens threw the bat splinter at Piazza, it’s like dude seriously? You are great, knock off the d-bag extra stuff.
billymayshere
You must be a rangers , tigers or royals fan lol you mad cause madbum destroyed your team and hit a home run the same game ? Madbum is your idol , you love him
chesteraarthur
Ah yes, anyone who dislikes your team’s player must be some category that you define. But of course….
dodgerfan711
Bumgarner is extremely arrogant. He thinks he can bully puig and also gets really mad when people look at the ball in any way. Its understood why people hate him.
bleacherbum
Yeah he is a bully. He is that kid who is bigger than everyone else who feels like he can just say and do whatever he wants. I can’t wait until he hits someone bigger than him like an Aaron Judge or something and have Bumgarner try barking at a him for crowding the plate, I want to see him get checked by someone finally.
ABStract
I’d love to see that too!
No one in baseball has ever had the guts to stand up to him…and I think there’s a reason all other players know they can’t mess with Bum.
As much as I hate the phrase, he truly is country strong. He’s ropin and picking up heifers all day in the offseason. I mean, have u seen his wife!?! If he can toss her around, I’d hate to see how young mr judge would come away from that fight.
All (partial) joking aside, I’m not sure anyone in MLB actually has the guts to get in Bum’s face and not back down. And, my own opinion, but I think it’s cuz he is literally the toughest, angriest and scariest player out there (currently). I think he’d eat judge alive
ttinsley1434
Puig says hi.
orangefriday
Good? As much as I don’t like the Dodgers, I wouldn’t wish any of their guys ill will. Not even Puig.
jdgoat
Agreed 100%. Part of the reason besides that that I don’t like him is how overrated he is. Sure he’s had great postseasons, but he’s a borderline top 10 pitcher in the game, and some people act as though he’s the best.
orangefriday
He has the 3rd best WHIP among active pitchers (20th all-time) and is virtually untouchable in the post-season with the lowest ERA in world series history. Oh, and the dude can hit: First pitcher to hit 2 HRs on opening day, ties the record for most grand slams hit by a pitcher in a season (2), ties the record for most career grand slams by a pitcher (2). The list goes on. He’s only overrated because he’s not on your team.
sportznut1000
ok goat, ill take the bait. you throw around “borderline top 10” like you actually put some thought into it. ill spot you kershaw, chris sale, jake arrieta and after that your on your own. maybe scherzer but again anyone else and you kinda have to give the edge to bumgarner based on his post season numbers. its not like he had one or two good post seasons either.
gmenfan
You can dislike a player for whatever reason, but when you use words like overrated despite the statistical facts, you look absurd and your argument looks petty. Strike three.
jdgoat
I just see some people say he’s the best pitcher in the game and that’s simply not true. And for orangefriday, sure he can hit for a pitcher, but that’s still awful. His career ops is like .570 or something I’m pretty sure
orangefriday
It’s awful compared to a position player, sure. But he’s a left-handed pitcher in the NL, Stop being a hater.
sportznut1000
just out of curiousity bleacher bum, who are some players you do like? i would argue the opposite, that players like bumgarner are more liked because they have a personality. just stay with the giants example, buster posey is about as vanilla as they come and because of that, i think more people would probably say they like bumgarner more than posey.
Comment Section Mod
There’s a difference between having personality and being an a**hole. A debatably racist a**hoke at that
bleacherbum
I mean there are a lot of personalities in the game that benefit the game because of the energy and passion they play it with along with respect their opponents along the way. Bumgarner is bully redneck that doesn’t like anybody, I’m not saying anything that people don’t already know. He would get a lot more respect from other cities fan bases if he didn’t act how he does. It’s alarming when the only fans that like him are Giants fans. Jeter, Gwynn, Ripken all played for the same organization but are beloved all over the game not just in the city they played in. Bumgarner fits that same mold of playing for the same team his whole career but why isn’t he loved around the game like the guys I mentioned were? Because he is a D-Bag. Simple as that.

What a dumb activity for a person who’s livelihood relies on his physical health!!
ReverieDays
Don’t most people’s?

If I hurt my shoulder, I’d still be able to program at like 90%, so not really
billymayshere
Good for you
Lbd
Most of the people here get their feelings hurt real fast if you question there statement. It’s really funny how many people take what is said here so personally. You would think you made fun of a guys mother or family. But I guess joking around or voicing your opinion is discouraged. Haha.

Somebody’s probably getting chewed out big time.

“The injury is not a common one for a pitcher, but it does happen to quarterbacks with regularity..”
At first I thought that was referring to dirt biking injuries……
ABCD
Shades of Ron Gant…

Can you ask Kyle to stop K-ing in 1/3 of his at bats, please?
billymayshere
Ha , typical knew you were a cubs fan , enjoy your one title in 100 years lol
jdgoat
You’re so dumb
billymayshere
Blow
chesteraarthur
I certainly do enjoy that title. It is quite gracious of you to allow me to enjoy the title that the team that I root for won. You are truly a great man Billy Mays. It is unfortunate that you loved the cocaine so much.
chesteraarthur
Yes Billy, we know you love the blow.
billymayshere
Yea titles are nice , I’ve celebrated 3 World Series and 1 NBA championship in the last 7 years . Good days to be a giants and warriors fan
gocincy
It is good days to be a Giants and Dubs fan. After five decades of mediocrity, the Giants finally put together a good team. And after three decades as one of the worst franchises in all of sports, the Dubs have a great team that plays a beautiful game. My point is that these winning years are fleeting, so enjoy them.
billymayshere
A cubs fan talking about mediocrity ? Lol 107 years of mediocrity means you have no legs to stand on.
gocincy
You can accuse me of lots of things, but I won’t accept being called a Cubs fan. That’s blasphemous. But you said it, so I’ll merely point out that the Giants were in fact mediocre. From the 1960s through early 2000s, the Giants were in the bottom quartile of teams. They’re doing well now, so enjoy it.
orangefriday
I’ll merely point out that the Giants are in fact the winningest franchise in baseball history.

The Yankees send their regards.
ABStract
Ugh, just stop dude
You’re the kind of bay fan that gives us all a bad rep
orangefriday
The Yankees have the best win-loss ratio, but not the most wins. I only brought it up because gocincy seems to think the Giants were mediocre before 2010.
ABCD
I can’t! Gant tied me up!
But Kyle delivered today anyway.
JustTheFacts 2
This sucks, but with the way the team has faired in his starts, this may not be too bad. And, he’s probably thrown more total innings than anyone else in baseball the last few years. That is going to be at least 6-8 less starts he’ll have at the end of the year.
GarryHarris
27 years old, 6’5″, dirt bike…. not childish?
TheBarNone
If it is a Grade I AC separation, he should have a fairly quick recovery with an injection, PT, and a little rehab assignment. If it is a Grade II AC separation then there is reason for concern. That is when you start to have rotator cuff damage and/or labral tears.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
It’s unfortunate what happened to Bumgarner, but I can’t help but feel like the Giants would have (or should have) had some clause in his contract that precludes these types of things. Dirt biking can definitely be seen as an abnormally dangerous activity, so the fact that he was doing this during the season seems pretty negligent on his part.
Also, I just have to say that this is one heck of a comments section, and I mean that in a bad way. Why can’t people just get along?
jd396
I strained my shoulder and neck once when I was doing fake air karate moves. Stuff happens.
TradeAcuna
“stuff happens” this guy says.
davidcoonce74
I’ve read absolutely nothing that suggests the Giants are going to try to not pay him because of a violation of his contract, so I think we can put that notion to rest. Either A) dirt-biking isn’t a violation of anything; B)Bumgarner negotiated that out of the extremely team-favorable extension he signed in 2015….he’s only making 12 million this year and the next two; or C) (and this is most likely) he’s the Giants’ second best player and they don’t really want to tick him off. He was off to a terrific start before this happened. Maybe behind closed doors they take him to task but I doubt they would publicly try to void his contract or suspend him without pay. (Of course, voiding a contract is almost impossible in MLB)
lesterdnightfly
Mark Prior’s injury was also thought to be minor at the time. At least his injury was on the field.
Asinine choice of activity, Bumgarner.

I used to come to MLBTR for news that will help advance my fantasy baseball team. Now I come for the comments section so I can relive my jr. high school days. Love it.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Tell me about it. I remember just few years ago when this site seemed totally different. While it’s great to see that the site has grown since then, the newer audiences that it has attracted have certainly caused a pretty negative change.
catchdogg
Here’s hoping for a quick recovery for MadBum.
halosfan4ever27
He’s my favorite pitcher, but that’s what you get for being selfish to your team.
RiverCatsFilms
He’s not being selfish. He had a bad start and was taking an off-day to do something. I guarantee you he tried to walk it off for his team but it was too much for him. It is his fault, but he isn’t dead and that’s what matters
Armaday
Check the time stamp on this comment…That was pretty stupid riding a dirt bike. You are all saying he will be ready for the post season. I just hope there is a post season opportunity there when he is done healing. What’s wrong with these guys?
acmeants
Anytime I need a few laughs, you guys make my day. I’m truly happy that so many are so passionate in expressing their feelings about the game of baseball (and the game of life). Rant on.
whatever
Um yeah. If I saw as large a discrepancy as 2-3 games compared to 6-8 weeks I’d know to check the time of the post since the information was changing quickly. Common sense.
