The Braves have designated infielder Chase d’Arnaud for assignment, according to David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (via Twitter). Atlanta has summoned outfielder Lane Adams from Triple-A to take the roster spot.
d’Arnaud, 30, has bounced around the league over his six seasons in the majors, but received his most extensive action yet last year with the Braves. Over 262 plate appearances, he slashed .245/.317/.335. While he had managed three hits and two walks in his ten trips to the plate thus far in 2016, the Braves evidently elected to go in another direction for the time being.
The 27-year-old Adams has seen the majors, but only briefly. He was off to a strong start at Triple-A, though, with a .333/.352/.588 slash line — but also 16 strikeouts against just a pair of walks — over his 54 plate appearances. He’ll join Emilio Bonifacio in the reserve outfield mix, though it’s also possible that the former could see more action in the infield with d’Arnaud’s departure from the roster.

What is the infatuation the braves have with Bonafacio that warranted any inclusion on the major league roster over Chase d’Arnauld? I’m not in any way saying Chase d’Arnauld is a great player but Bonafacio doesn’t even turn in good atbats, much less actually reach base. I could easily had seen both as being improved upon, but Bonafacio should have easily been the first to go away.

Absolute agreement from me
bhskins05
Full agreement here as well
darkstar61
Chase is younger and potentially under team control until 2021, so he might have had at least some type of future with the club. Braves don’t seem to care for those types all that much. They seem to prefer the “named” players to help them reach that .333 record.
…besides, who isn’t beyond impressed with the .325 OPS Bonafacio is producing?! That type of truly special production shows a talent level rarely seen in a Major Leaguer.
leefieux
Who is Chase d’Arnauld? Is he related to the guy who ran “Arnauld’s” Drive in on Happy Days?
davidcoonce74
It’s the problem of three-man benches. Bonifacio hasn’t been good in years but he can play every position on the field.
bravesfan88
I completely agree!!
The ONLY thing Bonifacio has proven is that he can get a bunt down, when called upon to move a runner over…But can’t about 50-75% of NL starting pitchers perform that task??
He has no place on this roster whatsoever..For CD to get designated before Bonifacio, well that’s just a crying shame!! Chase has actually proven he can get a timely hit or two off the bench, albeit a single, but still lol…It’s better than a K or a weak groundball to the infield…
Regardless though, at leaSt they did call up Adams. Now, they need to designate Bonifacio, and begin a platoon at 3B with Adonis and Rio Ruiz…
vacommish
Agreed. They are praying he generates some value, but that ship has sailed. Need more bats. Howard up soon to try and get him sellable.
RunDMC
Who else would be the backup CF? Not that I think he is good, but he is all we have right now.
darkstar61
He has played all of 1 inning in Center, while being a -22 UZR/150 fielder in Left (with a -36.4 in LF last season)
…maybe its just me, but it seems having even a pitcher for an emergency backup there would probably produce similar all around production to what Emilio is providing; and that goes for both the glove and the bat
southi
Chase d’Arnauld had major league experience in centerfield, as does Jace Peterson. Lane Adams is I’d imagine would now be second on the centerfield depth chart.
bravesfan
I agree. This doesn’t make sense.
TradeAcuna
i honestly feel bad for Chase but at least this is the first step of many that need to be made. You think the Mets will go for him to play with his brother?
WAH1447
Why keep bonifaciio on the roster that’s a joke he needs to go
Chebert
Chase d’Arnaud is a legit MLB player and hopefully another team scoops him up pronto.
pztpaco34
Yeah. I’d love to have him stay in a Braves uniform, but I also want him to keep a major league deal somewhere. Best of luck to him.
ffjsisk
Huh? Why on Earth does this headline not read Emilio Bonifacio dfa’d?
bravesfan
because that would be the logical thing for the braves to do. and to expect logic from a franchise that sign BJ upton to a mega deal and kept playing him even as a strikeout king would be illogical. lol
Braves2017
Hopefully he will clear waivers.
Backatitagain
Stands to reason, d’Arnauld only bench player with positive WAR. Can you say Tanking?
bastros88
Lane adams, what the…….
TradeAcuna
I just can’t help but think if some of you even watch baseball? How are their people here who think Chase is a good player? He is just as useless and Boni. Clearly versatilely means nothing if you can’t hit and neither can hit. Personally I’m happy Chase was DFA’d just because it erases question as to whether or not he would have stayed with the team or not. He is out and Boni is next!
darkstar61
Chase is a fair running, fair fielding infielder who has hit at a fair rate for a bench guy over his time in Atlanta. He is also under cost-controlled team control for up to 4 years (well, the rest of this year plus 3) if the team so wanted.
That is anything but useless for a club that has no intention of doing anything but bide their time until younger players are ready to take the helm. In fact, Chase is an ideal type of player to have on such a club. And who knows, he might just catch lightening in a bottle and become an okay trade chip the club can flip for a more useful piece because of that team control
Emilio, otoh, cant hit, field or run all that well while being controlled for only the rest of this season before he needs to be replaced, whether a younger player (or complimentary piece) is ready to take his place in 2018 or not. He is truly worthless to the club in every way..
TradeAcuna
It is nice you are optimistic, but I’m not and I’m more than happy he is not on this team anymore.
darkstar61
It’s not about optimism what so ever, it’s about going the smart route. When you have a team that is going to be rather horrific while you wait for younger players to be ready to take over and lead a resurgence, you generally target Chase-like cost-controlled adequate position players to fill in the gaps temporarily for however long they are needed. Stopgaps should generally only be targeted when said players are not already available internally, not at the expense of such types.
Most every move should be about control for teams in such a rebuild. D’arnaud being on the club is helpful to what’s specifically going on and might just pay dividends. Emilio is truly worthless though
BravesBoi
Emilio can run very well and he can field a number of positions pretty decently. He hasn’t hit well for a while, but you are flat out wrong on him not running or fielding well
TradeAcuna
This is hilarious. There are actually people who are defending Chase and Boni. Talk about the Braves being in a rot when even the fans are finding positives out of useless players.
darkstar61
@BravesBoi
Not according to the statistical weight, which shows him to have been a negative value runner and fielder on top of that horrific hitter over the last 3 seasons.
Now I didn’t say he was horrendous in those two areas, but being a consistently negative value runner and fielder over a 3 year stretch means “cant hit, field or run all that well”
bravesfan
I think deliverance is missing the point on most peoples comments. From what I can tell, most believe Chase shouldn’t have been the first to go. He add more value overall than “Boni”. When trying to compare the both of them, you’re gonna make out like Chase is some king. But yes comparatively speaking, he’s not that great of a ball player.
Personally, I think he’s a perfect bench piece. and right now, our best bench piece. So this move doesn’t make much sense to me.
TradeAcuna
Your point is pointless when both guys will be out sooner than later. You guys are acting like Boni will remain with the team past this week. Who cares which of the two goes first? Boni will be gone once they call up Howard!
But again, the fact you consider Chase a perfect bench piece pretty much means that your opinion doesn’t matter to me post this comment.
darkstar61
Why in the freakin world would the Braves want yet another unwanted mid/late-30s has-been with absolutely no future on the team?
The team should honestly be releasing or trying to trade Howard for anything they can get, not bringing him up! Seriously, what difference would his washed up rear make on the second oldest and worst team in the NL? He would just be yet another ancient waste of space playing out his last games on a crud club that should be getting younger and more exciting because of the rebuilding
acmeants
I would like to think there is some hitting talent available in that much-lauded farm system.
TradeAcuna
Well, clearly they have no other choice, now do they? They are not looking for Howard to be their starting first baseman. He is there to hit homers, something the team is lacking. Like the guy below you said, where is the depth in this “farm system heavy” team? Apparently, hitting is non existing other than Albies who they will not call up unless Phillips gets hurt. They will purposely wait out a few months to save money.
Quite pathetic where the Braves are right now!
darkstar61
Ryan Howard was worth (-)1 WAR over roughly half a season worth of PA last season (in other words, nearly -2 WAR if over a full season)
Meanwhile Chase D’Arnaud was worth (+)0.3 in about 1/3 a season worth of AB (in other words, worth about +1 WAR if over a full season)
…but you think Chase (who was also under cheap team control for nearly 4 years) is a bum and they should really call up Howard to end his career making the team even worse
Yes, the team is straight pathetic because they are accumulating all these washed up bums who should be no where near a lineup that should be filled with controllable 23-30yos getting experience and showing if they can be part of the future at all. There is absolutely no reason junk like Howard or Suzuki or Recker or Bonifacio or Phillips or Garcia etc should be on this club – all they have done is form the single most expensive team in the clubs history, which is also one of the oldest and worst.
And the team actually has cost-controlled young players in AAA worthy of being in the majors right now to show if they can grow into a starter, or at minimum a bench player for the team for the next few seasons. Instead the club is full of a bunch of other teams trash wasting space – and you seem thrilled they are using it instead of the possible useful guys!

I forgot the Braves acquired all these guys for 10 million each. I’m not saying I’m happy with the direction of the team this year (don’t like Jaime nor Ra either) but reality is, they are trying to field a team of has beens to sell seats than put a bunch of unproven bench caliber bats at their highest level. Regardless which way you go, they will be garbage. If anything I wish we saw more of Wisler and Blair, but the fact they are not even considered right now goes to show how bad those younger guys really are.
edawg1512
Phillips should not be included in that… yes he is 35 but still a well above average fielder and a slightly above average at
darkstar61
Not 10 million each, but the accumulative cost is 128 million, 16th highest in the game, 53 million higher than last seasons total and easily the highest in the clubs history …all for one of the oldest and worst playing clubs the team has ever fielded
And those has-beens with the outrageous accumulative cost and pitiful play will end up costing the team attendance in the long run, not adding to it. In fact, they might be doing it already – compare the 2017 Braves +5k/g attendance boost to the last stadium to open, the 2012 Marlins who saw a +8.5K/g bump.
But think about what you are saying for a second there too – you are admitting the team is putting temporary attendance numbers above the future of the club. So in 3 years when the team is still trying to stop-gap many spots because they never allowed any younger, controlled players to be shown confidence and see if they can be part of the future, remember they cared more about one seasons attendance than putting the teams future in a better position
Then, we don’t even know how good or bad any of those players might be because they are not getting a shot – fair value guys like Chase that are under team control and might have upside in them are being dumped to keep has-beens playing out their last days in the game (with you cheering that move on). Players develop late sometimes (Kevin Millar instantly comes to mind, as do Nelson Cruz and Jose Bautista), where sometimes not so great prospects respond to the confidence shown by breaking out in unforeseen ways (like Jose Ramirez) …but you will never know what you might have if you refuse to even look, dismissing young players as unproven before they are given a shot and instead replacing them with other teams trash – trash that is playing worse than the young guys likely would have done anyway despite the massive cost
darkstar61
@edawg1512
2014 – 10.4 UZR/150
2015 – 2.1 UZR/150
2016 – (-)2.3 UZR/150
2017 – (-)13.0 UZR/150
Phillips is not an above average fielder anymore, with a horrific trend-line the last four seasons
Making it worse, remove the extra ~80 points of BAbip luck he has seen so far and his batting line drops from its current appearance to .286/.324/.429 (off .305 BAbip) – a line matching his poor hitting of the last couple seasons perfectly. So he sees regression on the BAbip and continues to field this horribly, he will be looking at a sub-0.5 (possibly negative numbers) WAR by the end of the year.
Yeah, he should be included in there
bravesfan
darkstar schooling some folks.
