When a biceps strain forced Angels right-hander Garrett Richards to the 10-day disabled list April 7, there was optimism that he’d return quickly. Now, unfortunately for both Richards and the Halos, he’s in line to sit out at least into the summer. The Angels are moving him to the 60-day DL, per an an announcement from the team.
“His most recent assessment and exam showed mild improvement in biceps strength and also irritation of the cutaneous nerve which is contributing to his strength deficit,” stated the club.
This is the second serious arm injury for Richards since last year, when an elbow issue limited him to just 34 2/3 innings. Richards elected against Tommy John surgery, instead opting for stem-cell therapy treatment, which was successful enough that he was able to take the mound again during the first week of this season. Richards allowed no runs on three hits and a walk in his April 5 season debut against the Athletics, but his biceps strain forced him to exit after only 4 2/3 frames.
As was the case last year, Richards’ prolonged absence should be a serious blow to the Angels’ hopes of contending. The club won a mere 74 games last season and has begun 2017 an ugly 7-11. For the second straight year, the Halos’ Richards-less starting staff hasn’t fared well. Thus far, the group has posted the majors’ fifth-worst ERA (4.35) and eighth-worst FIP (4.18). Ricky Nolasco, Matt Shoemaker, Jesse Chavez, Tyler Skaggs and J.C. Ramirez have taken the mound for multiple starts, while Alex Meyer has made one.
Looking ahead, it’s possible the 28-year-old Richards’ latest issue will put his tenure with the Angels in jeopardy. The team kept Richards via arbitration at a $6.85MM cost this year, but if he’s unable to return in 2017 (or if he shows poorly upon his comeback), he could be a non-tender candidate during the offseason. Richards is due to make his fourth and final trip through arbitration next winter.

2016 sequel. angels season already over from injuries yet again

Bad trades, bad signings, depleting The once best farm system in the business, bad GMs… all adds up in the end….
jdgoat
I’ll give you the signings but the trades haven’t really been bad at all.
Setzer
They haven’t been that bad, huh? How’s that Trumbo trade working out for us? And then trading Santiago to the Twins for Nolasco? How’s that deal working out for us? Should I post some #’s? How’s that Howie Kendrick trade working out for us? Gave up a great defensive 2nd baseman for what? A pitcher? Where is this pitcher and why isn’t he in our rotation? Yeah, there have been some spectacularly bad trades.
rez2405 2
Yeah lets post some numbers.. Let’s see where do I begin.. Ok here goes….
Ricky nolsacos era with the angels has been 3.57 era. Santiago with the twins? 4.60 (source: baseball reference). PLUS we have Skaggs who just pitched his last 16 innings given up only 2 runs… AND a project in meyer….. for Trumbo who’s grand total war these 3+ years per fangraphs has been ….. wait for it…. 2.1. LoL. Oh no wonder why he signed for so little
So that was not only a win for the angels but a HUGE win.
Let’s talk about Heaney for Kendrick? Let’s see where’s Kendrick Again? Oh he’s with the philies…. oh did he at least start with the Dodgers in critical games like the playoffs? Oh…… No? Old man utley did? Oh…..
How many years does Heaney have with the angels? At least 3 or 4 more? Oh…. at best I would say this trade has been a push as of now…. but once Heaney gets back.. yeah.. I make that trade all day everyday.
angels fan 3
I agree with you on these ones as well as the maybin and Espinosa ones as I think it is highly unlikely those guys that were traded become big players. The street deal was also a good one for the halos as they traded basically nothing for street and Trevor gott who was later traded for Escobar.
greatdaysport
A. Simmons. An absolute steal of a trade for the Angels.
Nolasco outpitched Santiago last year. While 4 to 5 innings Santiago is off to a good start, I’ll bet the house he’ll have another good year this year.
Maldonado for a so-so young catcher is another steal, considering how good he is defensively.
Philliesfan4life
We still need pitching, the angels are in a very tough spot. Do they consider trading trout, Or do they ride out the season and wait till more money comes off the books and they can finally put together a world series caliber rotation
halos101
are you crazy? first off, i will gladly take nolasco, skaggs, and meyers (who looks like he has a potential n the bullpen) for mark trumbo. And how could you say the howie deal was bad? heaney is a good, controllable pitcher that we got for a declining second baseman who’s defense is not very good anymore.
halos101
oh, and i forgot the mention the robbery of andrelton simmons that we did to the braves
angels fan 3
Wow I forgot to mention the Simmons one as well
Setzer
@greatdaysport Yeah, great move trading Santiago for Nolasco. Get a guy with a career ERA of almost 5 and is age 34 and give up a guy who is 5 years younger and has a career ERA of 3.79. I’ll take Santiago all day.
jdgoat
Trumbo isn’t a very good player and getting Heaney for Kendrick was a good trade. Nolasco for santiagos turned out pretty good what are you talking about
angels fan 3
The angels also got Meyer in that trade who has the potential of not only being a bullpen pitcher but a starter. They got an innings eater in nolasco who has figured some things out by using his sinker a lot more.
Philliesfan4life
Meyer should just stay in the bullpen, But if he was on the pirates i bet he would be turned around. Nolasco has pitched better since we got him. We do need an ace. Cueto or Arrieta
Setzer
Yeah, Nolasco is garbage.
James7430
The Halos just need to trade Trout. Rebuild for the future.
halos101
stop it
CubsFanForLife
I agree. One trade and the farm would be replenished. Richards is probably going to have to go through TJS in the future, pushing him back to maybe 2019 at the latest, and this is a wild card team at best.
AngelFan69
NOOOOOOO!!!!! Please stop bringing the TROUT TRADE zaga… that’s a NON-ISSUE!!!! The team needs to plan out a food strategy in how are they going to fill the holes on the off season after some huge baggage contracts come off the books. There will be some good pitchers on the market and if they play their cards right … we may get a #1 and #2 starters …
Philliesfan4life
the angels would get a big haul back for trout, i wouldn’t mind gutting the phillies farm system.
angels fan 3
Imagine if all the players they got back were busts
Philliesfan4life
It would take Moniak , Williams , Alfaro , Thompson and maybe Velazquez to get him.
halos101
no, there is no deal it “would take” to get mike trout. Idk how many times people need to tell you people who say deals for trout, it isn’t happening! You keep a talent like trout on your roster as long as he’ll stay. period.
angels fan 3
Exactly
AngelFan69
I meant to say a good strategy ….
Philliesfan4life
there goes the angels season, Should Arte Moreno even consider to start trading trout, calhoun and skaggs or others? We need an ace and more young talent
halos101
no, he shouldn’t. Look at it this way: The angels have salary space after this season with hamiltons contract gone and others. They also have some decent selling pieces at the deadline depending on how they play (maybin, revere, espinosa, maybe escobar). If we end up with another top 10 pick, it’ll go a long way to help our farm. Injuries isn’t the best way to do it, but a losing season is gonna help us in the long haul.
davidcoonce74
Trout isn’t going to be traded. Period. He’s on an absurdly team-friendly contract and there’s no real value you could get for his talent.
upsetangelsfan
How about Randall Grichuk? Could they have used him. Roberto Baldoquin? These are issues related to ownership. Unfortunately Arte Moreno has no knowledge of baseball yet wants to run this team. He allowed Tony Reaggins to fire Eddie Bane, Dipoto to draft Taylor Ward and Billy Boy to trade Sean Newcombe and Chris Ellis. Total incompetence from people who are either going to make or break you, The sad part is when you have a young superstar like Trout, what do you think the chances are you will be able to resign him with this present team? He is accomplishing individual goals but how would World Series rings look on his hand? Arte needs to sell the team and get an owner who is interested in winning. Years of bad ownership created this.
chesteraarthur
Newcomb is bad. Selling him when they did was very smart.
Philliesfan4life
the angels should call up former top prospect Manny Banuelos
angels fan 3
They needed a 3B at the time and relief pitching and they got a solid one in david freese and decent pitcher salas.
Philliesfan4life
I hope the angels spend their money right in the offseason, getting an ace like Arrieta or Cueto if he opts out, then get a second tier guy like hellickson.
halos101
the simmons trade was an absolute steal. And ward is a great defender, hitting is tbd though
Philliesfan4life
So far it is turning out to be a big steal but with the angels not having an ace right now, We need an ace in the rotation, i want them to make a big run at Darvish, maybe Cueto if he opts out, then sign hellickson as a second tier guy.
lebowskiachiever
Sadly, pretty much everyone knew this was coming. Garrett is simply a pitcher who broke. Most do eventually. His time just came early.
Philliesfan4life
what should the angels do with the money coming off the books in the offseason, Spend it on pitching or fill the line up
halos101
pitching is the big problem
Philliesfan4life
Who would you like to see the angels sign in the offseason with the money coming off the books.
halos101
at the right deal, specifically length, id love to have cueto
halosfan4ever27
Man…… I had some faith in the halos before the season. But now that we lost valbuena, richards, street, and bedrosian for a while Im not so sure. I want to say a rebuild is what this team needs to do….. but that all starts with trading trout. I just don’t know what would be best.
I want a new talented team in the future like the Padres, Braves and white sox will be in a couple years. I just can’t bring myself to think about losing trout.
lebowskiachiever
If you go to an Angels game it feels very California League. Nearly empty, dumpy just-off- the-freeway stadium with most going to watch the best player in the game for good tickets you can buy in the parking lot for like ten bucks.
It’s weird how emotions of a city work with sports teams. LA is, and will likely be forever, Dodgers and Lakers. Even when they suck the town is blue and purple. Just in the blood, passed down from our parents and grandparents. The Angels are a suburb. Clippers nomads. Just how it is.
Sports in every town depend on the blue collar. The Dodgers have the loyalty above all, the Lakers just behind. USC probably third. UCLA was gaining ground but losing it fast. Very few people care about the Clippers. No one north of the Orange Curtain cares about the Angels.
