The rotation picture is slowly coming into focus for the Yankees, who still haven’t made clear who’ll round out their staff. As George A. King III of the New York Post reports, though, the organization has decided that Adam Warren will open the year in the bullpen while Luis Cessa will start out in the minors. That leaves four remaining possibilities for the final two rotation jobs: Luis Severino, Bryan Mitchell, Chad Green, and Jordan Montgomery. While Montgomery has produced intriguing numbers in the upper minors last year as well as during camp this spring, he’s considered a “long shot,” per the report.
Here’s more news out of the AL East:
- There’s some positive news for Rays shortstop Matt Duffy, who received a clean MRI on his still-ailing heel, Topkin tweets. But there’s still no timeline for his return with camp about to break. Given the delayed healing thus far, it seems likely the club will exercise plenty of caution. Meanwhile, the Rays have informed catcher Jesus Sucre that he’ll be on the active roster, as Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports on Twitter. He’ll function as the backup to the just-acquired Derek Norris, with Luke Maile and Curt Casali heading to Triple-A for depth.
- While the focus has been on the pitching staff, it appears the Red Sox will be dealing with a few tough roster questions on the position-player side to open the year. Infielder Josh Rutledge is likely to start the year on the DL with a hamstring issue, skipper John Farrell told reporters including Tim Britton of the Providence Journal (Twitter links). What’s of added intrigue here is the fact that first baseman Mitch Moreland has been sent home with the flu, while Hanley Ramirez appears likely to be limited to DH duties. It seemed Rutledge had been slated to back up Moreland at the position; now, the club may be forced to press someone else into duty — Marco Hernandez and Steve Selsky were suggested as possibilities to take Rutledge’s roster spot — at least in a reserve function. Of course, it’s worth bearing in mind that this is likely only a short-term issue.
- As for the Red Sox’ pitching, there are a few minor updates worth noting. Righty Carson Smith is backing down a bit on his Tommy John rehab after experiencing tightness following his first pen session, Britton reports. It’s considered more a typical part of the process than any kind of setback. Starter David Price, meanwhile, is continuing a long-toss program (two days on, one day off) for the time being, Britton tweets. It’s not clear just when or how the team will decide to ramp things up for the lefty.

bryan Mitchell will probably win the rotation spot

He was so good b4 he broke his toe last year. Mitchell was on fire

That Matt Moore trade is looking good for the Giants. Meanwhile, trading Turner/Ross for Souza and Zobrist for Robertson is making it hard to see any good trades for the post-Friedman Rays; maybe there was?
MB923
It was San Diego that gave up Turner and Ross. Tampa gave up Wil Myers (still not a good trade for them though)
SuperSinker
The Rays traded Myers for Turner/Ross. Then traded those two for Souza.
MB923
No they didn’t. .It was a 3 team trade.
The Rays traded Myers, Ryan Hanigan and Jose Castillo to San Diego. San Diego traded Jake Bauers, Burch Smith, and Rene Rivera to Tampa as well as Joe Ross and Trea Turner to Washington. Washington traded Souza and Travis Ott to Tampa.

“Righty Joe Ross and shortstop Trea Turner (as a PTBNL) will each head from the Padres to D.C.* by way of Tampa.*”
MB923
I stand corrected. I’m seeing that it was basically 2 different deals done by the Rays. The first, was which they acquired Ross and Turner for the players they gave up to SD.
AidanVega123
That’s how lots of 3 team deals work. One team gets something from another and just forwards it to the 3rd team.
brandons-3
That’s flipping a trade which are are slightly different.
Flipping:
A to B and B to C
3 team:
A to B and B to C and C to A

It ticks me off that with all those wonderful baby boomers hitting awesomely, we basically have 1 darn good starter. It is the same ole story with CC, Big Mike and the others..
They couldn’t get a starter or two to help them be more in competition..there were tons Grrrrrrrr
I hope Montgomery can help out..
Tks for letting me vent guys!!
joeyreo13
I agree but hope our starters do better this year
Eileenyy9
my fingers are crossed
ABStract
Baby boomers? There are 55 year old dudes on the cubs now?
Or do u mean young power hitters?
I’m confused
ABStract
Or whatever team…

I wouldn’t be too down. With the almost 100mil coming off the books at the end of the season, the yanks will have the ability to sign two of Tanaka, Darvish, Arriata. Between Montgomery, Sevorino, Kaprelian, Adams, Cessa, Green, Mitchell, and Sheffield they only need two of those guys to work to have a great foursome.

Yeah but if you look at the options, it’s either keep developing the young guys, trade away key prospects for Quintana, or prematurely bring guys up to the bigs and hurt their development. I like where the yanks are heading, even if the rotation is going to be rough this year.

Rays never had Turner or Ross

Jake Bauers is looking good he was traded to the Rays in the deal also.
Digirolamo6194
Trea Turner was never picked or traded to or played in the Rays organization. Trea Turner was the famous PTBNL that wasnt necessarily named later. Everyone knew Turner was the one going in the trade but he could not be traded within his first full year( 365 days) of being drafted.

Drafted by Padres in 2014 I believe. Couldnt be traded until June of 2015 because of a rule in the CBA. In the offseason Turner made a big deal in trying to get traded earlier because he was playing in an Organization that had “no interest” in his development. That was his case against the Padres but to no avail. Therefore on June 7 or so 2015 he was traded to the Nats to complete the trade for Souza previously.

Well sure, technically you’re right, but it’s more the idea that they never needed Souza in the first place. If SD was willing you give up Ross, Turner, and Bauers for Myers, then the Rays could’ve just done that and come out with a coup. Instead they involved Washington, which obviously backfired

I will take Marrero over Rutledge everything. I dont get the whole rutledge thing
ghost of harambe
Marrero has hit .220/.257/.246/.503 in the mlb
Rutledge has hit .262/.312/.397.709 in mlb
There is actually a chance rutledge will be useful this season, unlike marrero.
I don’t get why he was outrighted to the minors instead of marrero
Bert17
Rutledge wasn’t outrighted to the minors — and can’t be because he was a Rule 5 pick so has to be kept on the 25-man roster/DL or offered back to the Rockies. He pulled a hamstring yesterday and is going onto the DL. Marrero’s value is 100 percent in his glove, but he’s never played 1st, so has pretty close to zero value if Moreland is out for a few days too.
ghost of harambe
They attempted to outright him and he elected free agency is what i meant. And for someone who is only hitting .200 in the majors, even defense isn’t going to be enough
gcc
Rutledge is an ok player not the fielder that Marrero is. Personally I would rather have Marco Hernandez as the 2nd Utility guy. And just to let you know Marrero’s sample size is small 65 MLB ABs is not enough judge a player on.
ghost of harambe
Hernandez will make the roster but probably only while rutledge is injured
baronbeard
You know, I don’t think Turner was ever with Tampa at all in any form.
Bert17
It’s all semantics. The issue is that the Rays COULD have had Turner/Ross because San Diego gave them up for only Tampa players, not any of the Nationals players. The Rays just chose not to keep those two in exchange for their players because they wanted Sousa. Whoops.
mattybro2
The Yankees would be crazy to start Hicks over Judge in right field. I hope to see Green or Severino in the bullpen sometime this year if they don’t work out as starters, they have the stuff to be dominate relievers. That Yankee bullpen is going to be crazy good this year, their middle relief core is a lot stronger, and Clippard is an under rated 7th inning guy.
