Here are today’s minor moves from throughout the game.
- The White Sox are bringing back left-hander Scott Snodgress on a minors pact, tweets Zach Links of MLBTR and ProFootballRumors. The 27-year-old Snodgress went to the White Sox in the fifth round of the 2011 draft and broke into the majors with them in 2014, when he logged the only 2 1/3 innings of his big league career. He then spent 2015 with the Angels organization before playing independent ball last season.
- The Red Sox have announced that they’ve purchased the contract of righty Hector Velazquez from the Piratas de Campeche in the Mexican League. The deal will be official once a physical is completed. The 28-year-old pitched well over the winter for the Mayos de Navojoa in the Mexican Pacific Winter League, with a 2.32 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 85 1/3 innings. He also fared well in the regular season for the Acereros de Monclova, with a 2.47 ERA, 8.2 K/9 and 1.1 BB/9 over 131 1/3 innings. He has spent his entire career in Mexico to this point.
- The Orioles have announced that they’ve signed outfielder Craig Gentry to a minor-league deal with a big-league Spring Training invite. Once somewhat of a sabermetric darling for his outstanding outfield defense and on-base ability, the 33-year-old Gentry has fallen on hard times in recent seasons. Last year, he played only briefly for the Angels before landing on the DL with a right lumbar spine strain and ultimately being released. For his eight-year big-league career, he has a .261/.335/.333 line, including just .222/.290/.263 in 353 plate appearances over the last three seasons.

Good luck, Gentry. Always loved him in Texas

Big Ranger too. This franchise is due. Always liked Gentry and the spark he brought. Limited skill set, but you need guys like him too.

If Gentry can return to the same form that he showed with Texas, he’d be a great fit for the Orioles.

He’s been bad for 3 years. He’s toast.

Meh…one can hope. The Orioles seem to go into every offseason needing speed and a guy that can work a count and get on base. The only way they are ever going to get a guy like that is if he comes off of the scrap heap, because Duquette doesn’t seem to think that he should spend money on that type of player, I’m just hoping for the best at this point.
You are right, though. He has looked lousy the last few years.

Those guys can get scary though at the end of their contracts. Pagan on the cheap though would be a good fit for them to platoon with one of smith or Kim

Yeah…I’m trying to be a “glass-half-full” guy with this one and maybe Gentry can find his stroke again. It’s disappointing, however that the team didn’t take a better run at Rajai Davis or Ben Revere. I know that those guys a not great OBP-types, but they would have at least gave them an element of speed.
I like Angel Pagan a lot, but for whatever reason that wasn’t in the cards for them either. Too bad…he’s a winner with a good skill set that could have helped.
As always, Orioles management continues to refuse to plug obvious holes in their line-up but keep throwing money at more of the same.

Can you (or one of the other hundreds of Orioles haters) tell me just exactly what 300/370/430 speed-defense outfielder was on the market this offseason that they should have overpaid for? Because I didn’t see him.

Good signing

Meant to say good signing by the Whitesox on Snodgress. He’s still throwing in the mid 90’s and if I remember correct, he had a hammer early in his career. With the Whitesox in need of LHPs, I like his chances to get up to Chicago at some point this year…

gentry to the Orioles is just not a good fit.
