The Mets are reportedly asking for two prospects in exchange for Jay Bruce, CSNPhilly.com’s Jim Salisbury reports. The Phillies have shown interest in Bruce in the past, though Salisbury points out that the rebuilding Phils could simply sign left-handed hitting free agents like Brandon Moss or Michael Saunders rather than part with minor league talent for Bruce. Of course, New York would hardly be demanding premium prospects for Bruce at this point, given how the outfielder hasn’t drummed up much trade interest this winter.
Here’s more player movement buzz from around baseball…
- There hasn’t been much interest in Ryan Braun this winter, which Peter Gammons of GammonsDaily.com attributes in part to some lingering hard feelings over how Braun’s representatives conducted themselves when he was trying to avoid a PED suspension in 2013. Perhaps a larger factor, of course, is the crowded outfield market. As one GM noted to Gammons, a team looking to add corner outfield power could prefer to sign the likes of Jose Bautista or Mark Trumbo rather than pay a hefty price in both prospects and contract by acquiring Braun from the Brewers.
- Also from Gammons, he reports that the Mets, Yankees, Dodgers and Red Sox will be among the 12-20 teams watching Craig Breslow’s showcase on January 23. Breslow has adopted new pitch-tracking technology in order to reinvent his throwing habits, with input from training partner Rich Hill (who revived his career in spectacular fashion).
- The Rockies aren’t interested in a reunion with Jorge de la Rosa, the Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders reports as part of a reader mailbag column. A longtime fixture of the Colorado rotation, de la Rosa has told teams he is willing to pitch as a starter, long reliever or swingman in order to increase his market. This flexibility doesn’t appear to appeal to the Rockies, though Saunders notes elsewhere in the mailbag that the team could use some rotation depth and more bullpen help.

I know it’s a slow news period, but if I hear one more time that the Phillies are looking at Moss/Saunders, i’m going to vomit blood horizontally. if you’re gonna do it, do it already. I guess I’m not giving the Phils rave reviews, if you will.
myaccount
Why does when they do it matter? Waiting it out could net them a more team-friendly contract. Seems you’re getting angry over nothing.
pinkerton
eh, I get angry over a lot. no biggie
lesterdnightfly
What a convenient rationalization.
Gunnerson
HAHAHAHAHA
lesterdnightfly
Hope you have a mop and a bucket to clean up your mess. Phillies signed your buddy Saunders.
seamaholic 2
De la Rosa is gonna help someone. He’s no shutdown dude but he’ll deliver innings and can spot start and strike people out. Very decent pitcher (and great guy).
egrossen
If he is content being a swing man, the Cubs should consider picking him up on the cheap. They need rotation depth. If he never starts, than at least he is a lefty out of the bullpen (which they need if Travis Wood doesn’t re-sign).
Philliesfan4life
I have the cubs getting fister since they missed out on ross
jramey1
As a Rockie fan you are absolutely right. He can still be someone’s 5th starter or Bullpen just not for 81 at Coors. Good Luck De La!
Draven_X_23
He will be an Oriole. DD was looking at trading for him the last couple years. Now with no depth a guy like this fills some needs.
georgebell 2
Mets traded Dilson Herrera and Max Wotell for a season and a third of Bruce, who did not improve his stock. Mets must be covering his entire salary to even get two low grade prospects back.
BillGiles
Two prospects for Bruce? LOL. Is Alderson high?
arc89
They would be happy to get 1. Sounds like a PR stunt to raise the value to 1. My bet is Bruce doesn’t get traded since even the Mets think Moss or Saunders is a up grade.
kingjenrry
Considering Alderson’s trade record, it’s clear he’s just a better negotiator than many other GMs out there.
SimplyAmazin91
At this point maybe keep Bruce and start Conforto in AAA. Maybe trade him if he rises his stock or bench him if conforto comes up later in the season. Shouldn’t mess around with conforto on the bench tho. Bruce still gives you 30 HRs and 80-90 it’s not nothing.
kbarr888
Bruce can be a notoriously slow starter in cold weather. Leaving Conforto in AAA would suck. The guy needs game-time AB’s.
Give Bruce to a team that will pay his salary, and be happy with whatever lottery ticket you can get back. They screwed up last July. Own it, and move on.
BillGiles
It wasn’t a bad deal to get Bruce, the mistake was picking up his option.
kingjenrry
Conforto hit .422in AAA last year. He gains nothing from playing at that level.

Braun’s representatives? How about Braun himself? He is 100% responsible for the aftermath of that situation. Blaming his representatives is completely misplaced.
thisbaezkid
100%. When you lie, get someone fired, get caught in your lie, then tell the truth when there’s no other options left, then you have absolutely no one to blame except for yourself.
davbee
The guy got fired for not doing his job correctly. He wasn’t supposed to bring the sample home when there was a facility still open to drop it off at.
kbarr888
The Haters will never “remember that fact”……they prefer to blame it on Braun.
The processor definitely screwed up, and didn’t follow protocol. Braun’s lawyer knew that was the only way to get him off, so that was the approach. He wasn’t accused of tampering with the actual sample, the issue was that “the sample could have been tainted because of the improper process”……That’s the Real Deal.
retire21
Braun DOES deserve the blame. HE juiced, not the collector. HE got caught, not the collector. HE branded the other an anti-Semite, not the collector.
baseballdeez
Just because Braun is responsible for putting PEDs in his system at seasons end to stay on the field with his hampering injury doesn’t negate anything stated above, which is the truth. Braun took and lied. But he didn’t fail to follow protocol/chain of custody. The collector did. And as a result, Braun won the appeal and changes were made in how to handle samples moving forward. If the collector didn’t fail to do his job then Braun would have just been suspended.
It’s been 5yrs. No team is butt hurt about it. There have been plenty of teams offering contracts to players who failed tests. His market is small because he has 5 teams on his list he’s ok being traded too (Miami + west coast where he lives) but MLBTR is terrible at everything except posting what actual journalists tweet about acquisitions. He loves Milwaukee and is heavily involved in the community so he’s not going to approve anything else unless he’s in his final year looking for a championship.
The only butt hurt person was Selig, who paid millions upon millions while threatening to bury people in lawsuits forever until handed over any info to use to suspend Braun, ARod (and others)
WheelinDealinDodgers
Braun is jewish?
lesterdnightfly
kbarr888:
Sure, Braun had nothing to do with this whole scenario. Right….
The Braun Apologists will never “remember that fact” ….. they prefer to blame it on the process and the processor.

Yawn…Sandy outsmarting…..Sandy. Where have I seen this before?
metseventually 2
RA Dickey. Carlos Beltran. Marlon Byrd.
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
Marlon Byrd = Dilson Herrera. How about EY Jr and letting Murphy go for nothing? .That was brilliant.
frankthetank1985
Enough about Murphy. Sheesh. Nobody knew he would be an MVP type player. Best u can say he found power. But nobody, not even him, knew he would produce like last year. If he thought he was that good he would have waited and asked for more money or take the one year offer the Mets put up to claim the draft pick and then go nuts this season in a weaker free agent class. He didn’t gamble on himself so why blame sandy for that too. Sandy made up for it with walker, who had a great season. Better than what Murphy had in any of his seasons with the Mets. I loved murph. But don’t pretend you were the ONLY person in the world that KNEW he would put up MVP numbers all year long.
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
Not pretending. I KNEW and predicted when he signed that he would lead the Nats into the Playoffs (actually if they weren’t such looosers I had predicted he would lead them to the WS).
Rob66
How about releasing Justin Turner?
hojostache
No one thought JT would go from a part-time guy to mashing. His rise was even more drastic than Murphy.
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
All because they thought 800K was too much for him.
metseventually 2
…what about EY Jr? A casual signing that every GM makes?
Enough about Murphy. The man made a mistake on one player. Go be a Padres fan if you want real misery.
jpelle36
The Phillies are rebuilding (an excuse for losing). Why get anyone? Rebuild from within as they are not looking to compete for another 5 years.
chesteraarthur
you sign them, if they perform you can flip them for prospects. See cubs – jake arrieta, baves chris johnson x2
gomerhodge71
I’ll admit, I never thought I’d live to see the day when “Craig Breslow” and “showcase” would be used in the same sentence, but there you are.
chesteraarthur
Of course peter gammons thinks its about the peds years ago and not performance, contract, and acquisition cost.
chesteraarthur
Asking for 2 prospects is such a generic statement. Here, have some low a filler.
I’ll be surprised if the mets can even find someone to take his contract off their hands for no acquisition cost
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
They gave away Billy Wagner for nothing…They will do the same to save some $$$$
kingjenrry
How does the front office that traded Billy Wagner have anything to do with the current front office – the one that just led this team to a pennant and back-t0-back playoffs?
hojostache
He can still hit 30hr and 90RBIs. So what if he is a statue in the outfield, power still plays.
Nick4747
As a sox fan on the right deal I’d be OK with breslow out of the pen.
jrwhite21
Amen to that
lesterdnightfly
Why do “Sox fans” forget that there are two “Sox” teams, White and Red? Is it so hard to specify which one you are for?
Nick4747
Because most fans should be able to decipher the difference when speaking about an article that made no mention of the other sox team.
lesterdnightfly
Prove that.
dematteo42282
At this point…the Mets should just keep Bruce…as much as I love Conforto and what player he can be….i know what player Bruce is
.240-.250. 25-35hr. 80-90rbi
Picking up his option was not a mistake…it was protection against the potential loss of Cespedes…now we have both..i dont think its a bad problem to have. Each outfielder has 25 -30hr potential. Defense may be an issue…but thats where Lagares comes in…and id have Nimmo up and Conforto down to keep hid service time down. Can alwayd be called up if there are struggles. Bullpen is where the Mets should focus….Feliz would have been a nice addition imo…but the foundation is solid. A complimentary piece or 2 would makr me consider the offseason a success
frankthetank1985
I couldn’t agree more with all u said.
slider32
The Mets have too many all or nothing hitters that are streaky including Cespedes. They will have weeks that they will win alot, but their will times where they will lose a lot too. It will all come down to their top pitching staying healthy.
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
Agreed.
kingjenrry
The way the Mets are built, their pitchers don’t have to stay healthy. Harvey, deGrom, and Matz all lost plenty of time last year and yet the Mets still had a Top 3 rotation in baseball throughout the season. Since they go 7 or 8 deep at starter, it’s fine if they have an injury or two.
RedSox2017
The Rockies should sign De La Rosa, they need starting pitching and relief
