The Padres have claimed righty Tyrell Jenkins off waivers from the Reds, San Diego announced. Cincinnati evidently sought to slip the 24-year-old through waivers, but he’ll land on the 40-man roster of a new organization instead.
This isn’t the first time Jenkins has changed hands this winter, of course. He previously went from the Braves to the Rangers via trade before being designated by Texas and claimed by Cincinnati.
It’s obvious that plenty of teams still like Jenkins’s arm, despite his less-than-inspiring 2016 season. A sandwich-round selection in the 2010 draft, Jenkins has posted excellent run-prevention numbers in the upper minors, but lacks the peripherals to match them.
Over 129 career frames at Triple-A, Jenkins owns a 2.86 ERA with 5.9 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9. Things got worse when he received a call to the majors for the first time in 2016. He worked to a 5.88 ERA, recording just 26 strikeouts while allowing 33 walks and 11 home runs over his 52 innings.

Good luck to Jenkins, perhaps he will have a legitimate shot at pitching in the big leagues this upcoming season.
marmaduke
Only if the Padres deal him away will he have success. No offense. But, they’re a Triple A team masquerading themselves in the majors. Season players for “the show,” and then trade them to a contender. In return, S.D. receives new prospects in the deal.
antonio bananas
well they tried the whole “lets acquire a bunch of names” (kemp, shields, kimbrel) and that didnt work either, did it?
YourDaddy
I think Jenkins will stick at least through camp. Great stuff has never turned into great results. Do your magic Balsley.

…alright chums, let’s do this. TY-RELLLL JENNNNNKINNNNSSS!!!!!

Well played

Oh my God he just ran in.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
At least he’s still got chicken.
willymayshayse
My question is why the Reds exposed him to waivers when they just picked him up and are bullpen starved?
EndinStealth
They needed the roster spot taken by Storen
lesterdnightfly
Any sandwich selection should play for Nippon Ham. To get some seasoning….

That’s bologna
barkinghumans77
Lettuce not pass judgement before he’s had a chance to cut the mustard.
lesterdnightfly
Jonathan Mayo praised him, but boy he was spreading it on thick.
ffjsisk
His career has been sub standard so far, but I think he can get on a roll with this club
lesterdnightfly
Yeah, he’s got upper-crust talent. Hope he’s not crummy.
Or he’ll be … toast.
ffjsisk
If he is crummy, the Pad’s rotation will be in a pickle.

That’s a jarring statement…

Fact is…….Jenkins has a Live Arm and somewhat electric stuff……..but my buddy who knows him from the minors (Cardinals) says that he can (at times) be a real “Head Case”. I hope he gets it together and can be in a rotation………would love to see what he can really do. Apparently, C-Mart was quite a head case a couple years back too………
Phillies2017
He’s not a starter and his stuff would play up in the bullpen. The quicker teams realize this, the quicker he will find success. Jenkins could be a legitimate 7th or 8th inning reliever.
davidcoonce74
Padres seem to have this problem. Cashner could have been an elite closer. Cosart should clearly be a reliever. But SD insists on putting two-pitch guys in the rotation and then hope for he best.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Cashner gets hit hard in the first inning. If you use him as a reliever that one bad inning is all you will get out of him.
davidcoonce74
But it’s possible that’s a function of him just “pacing himself.” In the bullpen he could have just aired it out. We’ll never know now, I suppose.

Awesome…..Time for Padre “Overhaul’in”..Go Baby Pads!
dtcarroll1992
Not sure why Tyrell is having so much trouble sticking with a team. I thought he looked pretty good with the Braves last year. Obviously not ready yet and he isn’t upper tier talent, but I think he could be pretty good soon.. regardless I wish him the best.
redsfanman
He’s got talent, but terrible peripheral numbers. Rangers and Reds wanted to slip him through waivers, and the Padres will likely try that next. He’s someone everyone wants in their farm system, but not on their 40 man roster.
davidcoonce74
Padres only have 37 players on their 40-man, so not as much of an issue for them.
bravesfan
Braves should have never traded him. Top 100 talent that we barely gave a chance. At the end of the day, it looks silly that we traded him just so the Rangers could let him go.
EndinStealth
I looks worse for the Rangers.
southi
While I do seriously wish Jenkins success the guy does NOT have swing and miss stuff nor does the have good control. There were simply other guys in Atlanta that they wanted on the 40 man roster more. That is why he was one of the ones included to the Rangers. I will agree with EndinStealth…it looks worse for the Rangers to have received him in a trade and then cut him off the 40 man.
Jenkins is still somewhat youngish, athletic and could turn it around, but I think at best he will be a middle reliever, 6th/7th type guy.
g55s
He will play for every team before playing for ANY team!
Rounding3rd
I predict the waiver claim roulette ends when the Angels claim him. Tyrell’s probably better than most of their bullpen already.
Travis’ Wood
Is he out of options? Seems like he must be based on how he’s bounced around this offseason. Would’ve been nice to include that info in the article if that is the case.
zippytms
According to RosterResource, he has one option season left. He could be bouncing around because the other teams don’t have room on the 40-man to carry a fringe project pitcher. The Padres had the room to add a guy who could spend most of the season in the minors.
Travis’ Wood
Surprised the Braves Rangers and Reds all don’t have space on their 40 man for an optionable former top 100 prospect
redsfanman
Teams just seem to see Tyrell Jenkins with enough red flags that he should clear waivers. He’s a ‘former’ top 100 prospect for good reasons, low K rate and high BB rate.
DeadliestCatch
Tyrell needs to ketchup to his ability. Raw talent never harnessed.
zippytms
something about hot dogs.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
I like this for the Padres. Perhaps the pitching coaches can help him iron things out and he can be used in spot starts or the bullpen during the coming season.
davep-3
I like this claim by the Padres a lot. He has a live arm and is the type of guy the Padres should be putting on roster in 2016. I prefer guys like this on roster rather than signing aging vets like Peavy or Weaver.
tugriverred
D Williams goal in his first season as president of baseball operations for the Reds must be to facilitate the Padres rebuild , wether by making rule V picks for cash or by placing potential future bullpen pieces at their feet . Everyone knows the Reds bullpen is stacked with talent . No need to carry a guy like Jenkins with all the records the Reds pitching staff set last year.
redsfanman
If Jenkins cleared waivers, like he arguably should have, adding Jenkins to the organization as a low-risk, high reward pitching project would’ve been a great success story. Instead, a non-story.
The Reds organization definitely has a lot of arms who are better prepared to pitch in the majors today than Tyrell Jenkins. Jenkins is a long term project. Keeping him on the 40 man roster wasn’t an immediate solution to anything. I suspect the Padres will also try to slip Jenkins through waivers.
They didn’t sell their Rule 5 pick to the Padres for cash, they traded it for 21 year old infielder Josh VanMeter. A prospect for a prospect, only one of them has to be returned if he doesn’t stick on the 25 man roster.
DS1
Best of luck, Brotha Jenkins!!
TDKnies 2
Never been much of a strikeout guy and that BB/9 ballooned real bad at the big league level after not being all that great in AAA in the first place (the walks not being that great). Maybe pitching to contact in a pitcher friendly park is the answer? I know Petco ain’t what it once was and Turner field is a little bit nice to pitchers in its own right, but it’s either that or learn to miss bats which is obviously much easier said than done.
oceansnake84
On a rating of Jared Weaver to 10 I’d give him a 6, would be really surprised if he doesn’t swap out his four seam fastball for a two seam this year.
Travis’ Wood
“Jared weaver to 10” hahah that’s awesome

Even better if he’d spelled Jered correctly.

The only player who’s changed hands more than Jenkins this winter is David Rollins.
bbatardo
Perfect spot for him to land if he is to ever turn into a solid MLB player. It sucks being a fan of a rebuilding team, but I think 2017 will be interesting for the Padres to see which players take a step forward and which a step back.. could be a sneak peak into the future.
randalgrichuk15
There’s their ace.
