In 2016, MLB Trade Rumors featured articles from former MLB players Burke Badenhop, Ryan Spilborghs, and John Baker. We also had former Cubs executive Chuck Wasserstrom interview GMs and draft prospects, and former White Sox beat writer Brett Ballantini interview Rick Hahn and Dave Stewart. In 2017, we aim to continue bringing our readers diverse, original articles of this nature.
Are you a former MLB player or executive pondering the next phase of your career? Writing freelance articles for MLB Trade Rumors is an excellent way to dip your toe into the water while enjoying a large platform. Rather than analysis of current trades and signings, we’re looking for unique, untold stories from your MLB experience that you’re willing to share with our readers.
Are you an MLB beat writer who is between full-time jobs, or currently making a living as a freelancer for multiple outlets? We’re seeking baseball writers with experience interviewing players and executives, as well as the connections to land new interviews for MLBTR. Aside from earning a few extra bucks, we’ll tweet about your articles with your handle included, to help grow your following.
If you fit either of these descriptions, please email us at mlbtrhelp@gmail.com, explaining your background and a few ideas for articles you’d like to write for MLBTR.

Does managing a fantasy baseball team to back-to-back middle of the pack finishes qualify me to write for MLBTR, or just to be a talking head on ESPN?
BoSoxLifer
That qualifies you to be Jay Crawford
doolittle
You’re overqualified for ESPN. That’s a fact.

Haha

How about hiring people who cover just one team and know those teams inside and out? For instance I would actually pay you to let me cover the Jays so that I can get a chance to interview Shapiro/Atkins on WTF they are doing this offseason. Really, I will pay you for the chance!
jdgoat
You obviously don’t know them inside and out then
imnak
Had MLBTR ever given consideration to the idea of a running journal/blog. I feel it would be fascinating to have a minor league player brought on to give a once a week, season long blog describing the life, ups/downs, and intricacies of being a minor league player.
AstrosWS20
I love this idea! I’d totally read this if you all did it.
Tim Dierkes
With the right player with solid writing skills, I’d definitely be interested in that.
User 4245925809
Really like seeing “The Hopper’s” writings when he puts something here Tim. A combo of wit and wisdom that think is missed by other writers somewhat, not to mention, inner knowledge of the game itself.

There was an Australian guy who made it to A ball over there and he was blogging his experiences. Good read. Cool guy. I’ll see if I can find a link

I can contribute a column about the state of fire protection systems inside stadiums throughout the league

I saw that you took off that bogus article about the Dbacks. I’ve noticed several occasions where your writers put a spin that is clearly talking out of their butts. It might fool people who give way too much credibility to what your writer know. Hopefully you’ll rewrite it with the truth. The Diamondbacks organization brought a lawsuit after years of trying to work it out when the county failed to fulfill it’s end of the contract. The organization gives back millions to the valley. While they might need to consider other locations to meet their goals (perfectly within their rights), they don’t have intentions to leave Arizona or the downtown area. Those are the facts, while it is true that there have been propaganda articles suggesting “some” of the things you mentioned. These came from local newspapers that are friendly with the government. I hope you clear this up and stop allowing all the false spin. Otherwise your site will start morphing into TMZ.
homerheins
Oh wait, I dug deeper and found it. It was just taken off the main page.
lesterdnightfly
So the article is “bogus” because you disagree with it?
Why not voice your position there instead of in this unrelated article? MLBTR invites rational disagreement by its commenters.
BTW, that article compiled citations from other sources, as most MLBTR pieces do..It was not an essay by a writer with a “spin”, but a collection of perspectives by many sources, including some who reflected a milder version of your position. That’s hardly TMZ-like.
It was absolutely relevant to the interest of the readers here.
homerheins
No, the articles is “bogus” because it asserts a false premise: that it is a strategy where the Dbacks are seeking a new stadium. When you say “disagree,” it’s implies different ways we interpret facts. However, the assertion is bogus because the Dbacks claim they can factually prove the opposite, where they have made efforts to stay at Chase. Read the affidavit and you’ll see: kjzz.org/content/416398/arizona-diamondbacks-sue-m….
Yes, there is spin. While other sources are cited, you clearly fail to cite the one I just cited, which includes the legal document making the claims of the lawsuit. That’s a very important part of the story and it didn’t take much searching around to find it. I agree it is a relevant issue. I also agree with many things stated. However, the paragraph about it being strategy is spin. I read all MLBTR articles and notice a trend, where people like Jeff Todd add their spin. I believe this is done in order to sound relevant, like they have a special insight into the situation. People’s comments are telling to see the impression it gives off. People are actually mislead.
When sharing opinions, stick to statistical analysis. Although I don’t always agree 100% there either, MLBTR does that well most of the time. At least as useful as other baseball stat sites do. When sharing stories, just cite articles and restate facts. Don’t offer your special insights. Otherwise educated people like myself see it as talking out of your butt. If you continue this trend, we’ll likely value your opinion less on other matters too, and you’re site will likely lose value overall.
lesterdnightfly
“Otherwise educated people like myself see it as talking out of your butt.”
Well, that piece of arrogant eloquence pretty much sums up your attitude.
(BTW, educated people use don’t use “you’re” as the possessive of “you”. If you continue this trend, we’ll definitely value your opinion less, and your rant will lose any value.)
Dookie Howser, MD
This is a website with “rumors” in the title. If you look at this lawsuit in a vacuum, sure you may give the benefit of the doubt to the club, but we don’t live in a vacuum. We live in a world where sports franchises regularly use these tactics to get out of stadium leases to either switch markets or build a new stadium. Not an unfair leap for MLBTR to make the the same is happening in Arizona.
jd396
Usually people who use phraseology like “educated people like myself” are the ones most intimately familiar with the act of talking out of butt.
padam
Yet you failed yourself…”people use don’t use…”
Also, quotations are outside the period, not in.
lesterdnightfly
Right on the extra word mistake. Mea culpa.
But wrong on the quotation marks. The period was not part of the quotation, so it stays out.
Thanks for noticing. Seriously !
homerheins
Yes, I commented over there too. I thought it relevant to comment here because you’re seeking new writers. You need writers with journalistic integrity. You’ll probably get more of that with former players. However, all of your writers are associated. One bad writer who spins garbage is tainting everyone else.

Homerheins- I started around this site maybe 10 years ago, and you touch on some issues I had as this grew. Like many sports websites….the contributors weren’t those with a journalism background. I’m not sure mlbtr was credible enough to pull away writing talent from more established media..nor could they probably pay them. I have a slight background in sports journalism, as well as background within the game. There was one particular contributor that really set me off because he loved to insert himself in his stories. He was very pompous.
My point is getting around to saying that this is an interactive site that costs nothing. Anytime I’ve had any issue…especially with Jeff Todd….maybe many moons ago…he or Tim Dierkes would deal directly and honestly. A few times I grew to understand the process better. Mlbtr started as a basic aggregator of news…some of the struggle came when pieces wavered between news and commentary….and no…thats not solid journalism. Solid traditional journalism was NEVER going to give us this site that so many for many years treated like they co-owned..much like a coffeehouse.
I’ll say that mlbtr has grown by leaps and bounds since the earlier days. The new web design and launch about lost me though…but Im here. At that point it seemed like the site became flooded with quite a bit of immaturity in the comment section..making it much harder to have interesting conversation.
In the end I weigh cost vs value….and in that sense mlbtr is excellent, but all growth means learning curve.
User 4245925809
Agree with idea and want where teams should have to p0ay and fund future stadiums themselves also, or else stadium income should not go into the pocket of the team to enrich it’s said owner, just like they used to be.
If a team has enough money to spend 70-100m on payroll? It should have enough to build it’s own stadium, or move, then if not? Not exist as a MLB organization and as have said dozens of times here.. Too many teams as it is that are in the league already.
mcdusty31
I think it’s safe to say that homerheins is not giving the Diamondbacks article rave reviews

If O’Brien were still with them, it would be rave.

Bring in that guy who always posts comments in articles about Korean and Japanese transactions. Not sure who he is, but his sources are usually accurate and credible. Or at least pay him for gathering the information! Ha! Kidding about that last part. But this guy finds stuff no one else can. It’s crazy.

You guys should reach out to Jose Canseco on Twitter. He’s incredibly humorous and would be a fun read. I’m just not sure he knows how to write though.
Connorsoxfan
Nah he’s a nutcase.

Not sure where you are in your search, Tim, but would you consider a professional journalist that doesn’t have experience covering MLB? I have worked as a sports writer and also on the sports copy desk at a daily newspaper.
