There are at least three teams still pursuing veteran reliever Greg Holland, per Jon Heyman of Fan Rag (via Twitter). He lists the Nationals and Rockies as the two known entities, with a third mystery entrant also involved. With Spring Training just about three weeks off, Holland’s market seems to be “heating up,” Heyman says, though it’s still not clear what kind of timeline to expect.
At the moment, of course, Holland is occupied with more important matters, as he is among the players attending the funeral of stricken former teammate Yordano Ventura. Certainly, our thoughts are with Ventura’s family and friends as they lay him to rest today. Those interested in finding coverage from the perspective of the Royals’ contingent may wish to follow the reporting of Kansas City Star columnist Vahe Gregorian.
Here are some more notes relating to the relief market:
- Having addressed their need at second base, the Dodgers will now focus on adding another arm to their bullpen mix, per Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Joe Blanton could still return, per the report, while southpaw Jerry Blevins is also a target. But the club is looking to make only a one-year investment, Rosenthal notes, and could pivot to another arm if the value is there. Whether or not the team could still chase Holland isn’t clear at this moment.
- Righty Fernando Salas, meanwhile, remains one of the better available relievers. He’s still drawing interest from six unnamed teams, sources tell Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press (Twitter link). While Salas has struggled a bit with limiting the long ball and hasn’t posted terribly exciting earned run averages over the past two years, he has run up some compelling K/BB numbers at times. Plus, Salas finished the 2016 season with a flourish, permitting just four earned runs on 11 hits over 17 1/3 frames while racking up 19 strikeouts without issuing a single walk.
- Another right-handed reliever, Seth Maness, is set for a showcase on February 6th, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (via Twitter). The 28-year-old is looking to prove to organizations that he’s ready for camp after undergoing a new “primary repair” procedure — which Goold detailed here — in lieu of Tommy John surgery. Having already demonstrated a big groundball rate (59.4% for his career) and outstanding control (1.7 BB/9), there’ll be no shortage of interest if Maness looks anything like his usual self.
- About half of the teams in the league came to watch lefty Craig Breslow throw recently, per Peter Gammons of GammonsDaily.com (via Twitter). The veteran is attempting to follow the Rich Hill model for a late-career renaissance, with buttressed strength work and a new arm angle. Breslow’s new motion can be seen in this video, provided by Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN (courtesy of Twins scout Bill Mele, who was on hand). The 36-year-old has pitched in 11 major league seasons for seven different clubs, most recently appearing in 15 games for the Marlins in 2016.

Maness would be a good fit in Arizona. A Ground ball specialist like Ziegler was, he should have success at Chase Field

Agree.

dogers bring back Blanton and sign belivns and let’s go to ST
MaverickDodger
Please no more Tight Rope Blanton! I am of zero faith in his ability. He was able to accomplish an overall sense of good, but old Joe is still in there

Perhaps I am too uptight, I found the “Twitter timeline” to be EXTREMELY distasteful. Let Ventura rest, let his family grieve, let his teammates reminisce. Nobody should require a constant update of what’s transpiring. Like I said though, perhaps I’m too uptight.

Tough balance. Reporting in this way, which I’m sure is being done with utmost sensitivity (and obviously with the blessing of those involved), also allows others to be a part of the process in a way that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.

I appreciate that. I truly do. This may make me sound cold but regardless of how many times one watches someone pitch, one does not really know that person. I feel like we cross that line at times. Like you said, tough balance. A memorial in KC just seems less invasive.
Dock_Elvis
I’ll say this. I live in the KC area, and it really is a tight knit sports region…and I mean region. Royals draw from 4-5 hours away. I grew up driving to games 4 hours and returning home the same day. Its why had astroturf so long..and didnt make sense to so many….they didnt want people driving hours and getting rained put. Actually its very similar to the Cardinals fan base….just been low key for a long time. Id imagine this would be the reaction should the Cardinals had lost a mainstay of their team. Not to diminish Oscar Tavaras.
As a whole though it does seem we react more to situations than we used to.

Sometimes I feel Im having celebrity deaths marketed to me. I think we live in a very strange time. Im sensitive to it, though. My wife lost both parents in a tragic car accident last april. She had people who barely knew her grandstanding on Facebook saying that their “best friend had just lost her family”…soaking up attention. It was bizarre to say the least. I learned a lot about the dark nature of people. Had a neighbor knock on the door with cookies and ask me if they had lost body parts….even before we had their bodies back. People are strange and sick.
sufferforsnakes
I believe this country, heck, the world, places too much emphasis on celebrities and sports stars…..and politicians.
Like you said, we don’t know these people, and they certainly don’t know us. I say a prayer for the family and leave it at that, like I do with everyone.
I just wish people grieved the death of Jesus as much.

I’ll take the Angels as the “mystery team” on Holland. Wouldn’t discount a return to KC either, but I believe pitching in a warmer climate might be a logical choice. I’d say the Rockies might be leverage.
tuna411
lol, red_line…borass is holland’s agent…there is not a ‘mystery’ team…just a greedy, lying agent trying to get a two year deal with an opt out for a relief pitcher who hasn’t thrown a ball since the middle of the 2015 season. I’m all for ‘make what you can’ but these opt outs bother me…especially in this situation. Shouldn’t contracts be good for both sides??
Dock_Elvis
I dont buy the two year demand…thats not happening. I dont think there’s a mystery team either….not one that can’t be reasonably speculated on. Im just citing the Angels because they aren’t named in this piece. Boras schtick just doesn’t work as well now that teams know players and what their value truly is. Lets see him sell Hosmer as Joey Votto next winter. More like James Loney with skeptical defense.
vtadave
Hosmer is awful defensively. That pretty much led to him being sub-replacement level in 2016. Of course with a bounceback 2017…
Looking further though, he’s been below replacement level offensively in 3 of his 6 years and a horrible defender his entire career.
Boras will have to lower his “demands” to six years $150 million.
seamaholic 2
Hosmer’s about average for a 1B. Because of the positional adjustment, dWAR (if that’s what you’re looking at) is rarely higher than a few tenths of a point above zero for that position.
mike156
Not to be excessively skeptical, but when Heyman starts talking about a Boras client and “mystery entrants” I have to wonder about accuracy. Holland is asking for a lot right now…a large guarantee against health and non-performance and offering only an unproven promise.
Dock_Elvis
Some writers dont mind being shills…they are the equivalent to the “Entertainment Tonight” of baseball journalism. Even Peter Gammons seems to revel in being Peter Gammons.
chesteraarthur
mystery team is always lurking.
BlueSkyLA
That’s why it’s called the mystery team.
seamaholic 2
In this case I think the mystery team is real. Half of baseball has been connected to Holland this off-season. Got to think there’s more than the Nats and Rox still looking.
notagain27
Same PR machine that drums up the $400 million price tag for Bryce Harper is fueling the Holland Express as well.
MNwile
Giants will sign Holland.

With what money?

Jeff,
Love reading your work. Would like to see you do a piece commenting on the article MLB .com just put out about 9 players who could deserve a shot somewhere else. I’d love to see your opinions on who of these guys you think has a shot at being traded, who may be interested and what it would take to acquire.
Especially interested in Profar, Candelario, and Jimmy Nelson.

What Holland is looking for right now is ridiculous. He hasn’t pitched in over a yr., was inconsistent when he did pitch in 2015, was very underwhelming in his showcase, & want both a large guarantee & an opt out? So basically, if he’s terrible, he still gets to collect a fat paycheck for 2 yrs., but if he’s great, he leaves in 1… Any team that agrees to those terms under these circumstances would have to be either stupid or desperate; the team is taking all of the risk, w/ somewhat limited upside…
