One of the top three relievers, Mark Melancon, is off the board after agreeing to a record-setting $62MM deal with the Giants yesterday. But both Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen, the top two relievers of the winter, remain unsigned. Both are likely to make Melancon’s time as the relief contract record holder brief, and we’ll track today’s updates on their market here…
- The Yankees haven’t gone as high as $92MM in their offers to Chapman, and the Marlins aren’t believed to be willing to spend quite that much, Heyman reports (Twitter links).
- Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria has indeed given his front office the green light to spend on signing Chapman or Jansen, ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark reports, though this “preliminary approval” of funds may still not be enough to outbid other big spenders on either ace closer.
Earlier Updates
- The Yankees are “determined” to land Chapman, Heyman tweets. It’s not clear, however, that they’re the team that offered Chapman $92MM.
- One team believes Chapman has a $92MM offer in hand, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets.
- The Yankees have made offers to both Chapman and Jansen, reports MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch (on Twitter).
- Andy McCullough of the L.A. Times tweets that the Dodgers are remaining “competitive” in the markets for Jansen and Chapman, and they’ve also chatted with the Royals about closer Wade Davis.
- Chapman has received multiple offers that have passed the $80MM threshold, Heyman tweets. The Yankees still see him as their priority, but the Dodgers and Marlins are in the mix as well. He also suggests that the Nationals could join the fray for Chapman, pointing out that GM Mike Rizzo and manager Dusty Baker (who managed Chapman in Cincinnati) both love Chapman.
- There’s an expectation that Jansen will sign before Chapman, reports ESPN’s Jim Bowden.
- The Yankees are more focused on Chapman than Jansen and are willing to offer a five-year deal in the range of $80MM, reports FanRag’s Jon Heyman. Chapman said yesterday that he’s hoping to receive a six-year deal, but the Yankees won’t go to that level to sign him, according to Heyman. For the Yankees, Jansen is more of a backup plan to Chapman than a prime target.
- The Marlins are firmly in the mix for both top closers, at owner Jeffrey Loria’s behest, but their preference between the two differs from the Yankees, writes Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Miami has preferred Jansen to Chapman from the start of free agency, despite the fact that he comes with the burden of draft pick compensation after rejecting a qualifying offer. Sherman notes that if the Marlins are able to land Jansen before Chapman signs, that could push the Dodgers to make a strong run at Chapman, potentially throwing a wrench into the Yankees’ winter plans. The Dodgers are trying to retain Jansen, according to Sherman, but they’d seemingly shift course to Chapman if Jansen came off the board.
cubbiesn
Cubs need to sign one of these guys. Preferably chap because we wouldn’t lose pick but Jansen is imo just as good
Posey28
true
tim815
They don’t need to.
The charter wouldn’t be revoked if they didn’t.
Washington’s GM needs to win a post-season series soon, or he’ll be fired.
37santobanks
Chapman will be incredibly hittable in 3yrs when he doesn’t throw 105 anymore. I like where the Cubs are at right now. Maybe trade for a Wade Davis or Colome type, if upgrading is an absolute must.
tim815
Don’t trade Happ.Eloy/Cease/Clifton.
bsteady powers
Agreed. Clifton not so much
ucalex
Chapman will just use his slider more as he ages. It still grades as a plus pitch. So he’ll throw 98-100 with a plus slider. He’s not going to age that poorly. They talked about it a lot during the WS
Dmalsch22
I also don’t believe he will age poorly, the guy works harder than anyone apparently. Only problem could be say his Fb averages around 95 in 3 yrs, he’s used to throwing 103 it may not be easy for him to accept that he needs to pitch differently. With all that said I think he will still be throwing 100 by the end of his next contract
dutch91701
He was gassed and still throwing 98 and using his slider. If he ages near that I’d still take him over 99% of relievers.
bigkempin
Chapman’s slider is his best pitch……over his career, hitter’s have been held to a .100 BA against it.
bleu42
That’s because it’s 88 MPH after 101.
JT19
And in the WS we saw how exposed his slider was when he couldn’t hit over 100 consistently. Remember Rajai Davis’ game-tying home run? That was off a slider.
Jake 21
Not true, it was a 98MPH fastball.
JT19
I thought that was the at-bat where he threw only his slider. Maybe it was the at-bat before Davis? If so, my mistake.
JKB 2
It was NOT off a slider it was off a fastball.
Pedro Cerrano's Voodoo
Jake is correct. Fastball.
bsteady powers
The guy is great. Stop arguing over Aroldis Chapman. Take a step back. This is a dumb argument
pd14athletics
The guy might be great. Just don’t say he’s a great guy.
davidcoonce74
Maybe. Nolan Ryan was still throwing hard in his 40s. Fernando Rodney was still pumping gas last year at 38. I like the chances of a one-inning reliever to keep his stuff.
dewssox79
exactly!
BlueSkyLA
Better.
dave1775
Who mentioned the cubs in this story? Dummy
Mikel Grady
Soler for Davis? Candelario for Duffy?
royalsfan051020
More like both those guys for Davis.
Mikel Grady
For one year? If so rondon has his job back
sngehl01
Look at what half a year of chapman got the Yankees.
Bartis
I don’t Think that top line reliever is in the plans for the Cubs.
slider32
I don’t think the Cubs want to pay that high price for Jansen or Chapman, they might just wait until the deadline or trade for someone like Davis. They have the prospects to make any deal.
Bob Smiley
Chapman going to Yanks. Jansen to Houston or LAD.
Nervehammer
I’ve never heard that the Astros are after Jansen
teufelshunde4
Astro’s gave up a ton to get Giles.. cant see lunhow blowing a ton on a closer
zack0035
I’d love to see the Yankees get screwed. Please Jansen go to Marlins and Chapman to Dodgers. That would be so funny
ucalex
They wouldn’t really be screwed. Betances is very capable of being the closer. They just wouldn’t have the luxury of having 2 closers.
MB923
Then they would just make a trade to get somebody else or sign 2 less expensive relievers. I’m sure that’s what whichever one of these 3 teams that’s going to do that will miss out on Chapman and Jansen.
liamsfg
The Dodgers aren’t handing out any record breaking contracts to anyone anytime soon considering their debt situation.
vtadave
Wishful thinking Giants fan.
myaccount
Vtadave, this is actual a legit concern and the precise reason why they’re shopping McCarthy, Kazmir, Ether, etc. They need to shed salary ASAP.
nwh27871
They’re not in any type of debt, what are you talking about? If that’s the case any team with $100 million dollar payroll is in debt. If you are talking about the CBA, that doesn’t run into effect until next year.
dave1775
Words of a loser!
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Marlins are in no position to win. They need hitter around Stanton. Why no go after Trumbo EE and Jose baustisa. EE at 3rd. Joey bats in right and Trumbo at 1st. Then 2 years later they’ll be traded for low level prospects. Like the Jose Reyes and mark buerhle trade.
09meara
Maybe I’m off base here but why would the Marlins need a top closer and lose a pick when they need to revamp sp and add bats?
norcalblue
The Marlins are led by a fool for an owner who appears to be under the influence of a manager now staring at a 90 loss season. Like most managers, Mattingly is focused on his his record in the coming season. KJ Represents his best opportunity to pick up 5-8 wins that his current bullpen might not be able to get.
Kenley is going to have to weigh the lower Florida personal income tax rate against his opportunity to pitch in October the next five seasons. It’s going to come down to that I suspect.
BlueSkyLA
Consider the possibility that this rumor doesn’t deserve much credibility. We see lots of head-fakes during the hot stove season. We sure don’t have to believe all of them.
norcalblue
We will know shortly on that. I have suspected your point from the beginning; but, Loria is a true idiot who frequently reacts in an impulsive way. Being rich, arrogant, ignorant and stupid is a very dangerous combination in one person.
While I personally do see KJ as the better long-term investment, the loss of a first round pick should be all that any team needs to determine who to target in this situation. Florida has no business throwing stupid money at any elite closer with the starting staff they have; but, in their case pursuing Kenley is simply professional malparactice.
BlueSkyLA
Other than the massive contract they gave to Stanton, the Marlins are notorious for running a bargain basement operation, so that’s the main reason I don’t see this as more than a head fake. I imagine Mattingley has something of an in with Jansen but I doubt that would be enough. Other things being close to equal Jansen has to want to play for a winner.
mike156
I think Loria is engaging in window-dressing. As long as MLB resists a payroll floor while otherwise sending him revenue sharing money, he’s solidly in the black–and doesn’t have to be competitive. He’s probably doing this for show.
1e828d29
As soon as we won the World Series I thought we absolutely have to sign chapman. As time passed I think it’s a poor investment. We just can’t give up Happ or jimenez in the process of finding a closer.
SupremeZeus
Too volatile and too rich of a k for my blood. I would target a trade for the emerging and cost controlled Nate Jones.
CubsFanForLife
I’m curious, why didn’t the Cubs extend a qualifying offer to Chapman as a formality?
BlueSkyLA
As a midseason trade, he wasn’t eligible for one.
CubsFanForLife
Ah, I gotcha. Thank you!
themed
Most cub fans don’t know the difference between catchers interference and catchers interference.
themed
Catchers indifference and catchers interference. Darn auto correct
Mikel Grady
Catchers indifference is when contreras let’s runner go to second because Cubs are winning big. Catchers interference is when I throw objects at tv when batter would have struck out but he reaches with his mitt and makes contact with bat.
BlueSkyLA
I think you are actually talking about defensive indifference and fan annoyance.
Mikel Grady
Ha ha
yanksknicks
Yanks should sign chapman and mike dunn and then trade dellin to the nationals. Solid pen while also stocking the farm with more young assets
jd396
I want to see the Marlins sign Chapman.. just because.
yanks02026
Looks like yankees probably won’t get him now
willi
man , the Money being given to a guy that pitches only one Inning is ridiculous, 8How about theGuys that pitches the 7/8 inns are they going to get this money too !
Cam
The way bullpen usage is trending, the big money “closers” aren’t going to be exclusively 9th inning. We’re starting to see the best relievers become “high leverage” relievers, where they may be best served pitching in the 8th, or even 7th.
It’s reasonable to suggest, a closer can be used effectively in the 8th against 2,3,4 hitters, as opposed to a lesser reliever facing them, for the closer to face the 5,6,7 hitters (or lower) in the 9th.
vtadave
We’ll see if managers actually have the stones to do that during the regular season, and not just the playoffs.
JKB 2
There is nothing trending on the high leverage closers. Its how it always used to be. The were “fireman” they came in and put out the fire. 7th. 8th 9th. Whenever needed. And they came in with men on base!! Oh the good ole days. This “save” stat is the biggest joke in sports and just behind it is the silly quality start. Sutter. Gossage. Rollie Fingers. Sparky Lyle. They would all go more then one inning. Sometimes more then two
differentbears
Sort of. I believe it started with the idea of having a closer if you had THAT guy. Even in the 70s, complete games were the goal. Pitch counts still were on the horizon.
So teams with a closer would use that, but relievers were failed starters who came in when needed.
But as the closer emerged, then did the idea of a bullpen made up of specialists, expanding on the original change of starters, one elite closer, and the guys who aren’t either.
Basically, the closer was catching on, and then the idea of a specialist was expanded to more guys picking up those innings.
Nowadays, guys are often pegged as relievers before they even make the majors, and not always because they failed to make it as a starter.
Dmalsch22
Most are pegged as relievers as soon as high school because they can’t hold their high velocity and have reached or seem close to their potential height, weight, build
stymeedone
They do get it. There just aren’t many that throw 7-8 innings. More throw 5-6 innings.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Where are all the mental giants who were saying like 4 months ago that Chapman was a fool for not taking a $60m extension offer from the Cubs?
JKB 2
When did the Cubs make that offer?
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
When they traded for him
Cam
The more I look at it, the more I can see Chapman going to the Dodgers, and Jansen going elsewhere.
I like Jansen a lot – but..if the Dodgers re-sign him, they immediately miss out on the pick that they would re-coup if he went elsewhere. Chuck 90mil at Chapman, get a pick when Jansen signs with the Cubs, Yanks, Astros or whoever..win win.
Head to head, it’s really 1A and 1B between the two of them – the draft pick could sway decisions.
slider32
I would think Chapman would go to the Yanks if the money is similar, they took a chance on him after his suspension last year while the Dodgers wanted no part of him.
differentbears
Maybe I’m crazy, but I’d rather keep Jansen. He’s been so consistent, and he’s maintained his velocity. Plus he’s learning new pitches, occasionally throwing a slider now?
I like his stuff better, mainly because of the movement. I know Chapman throws really hard, and has a plus slider, but he seems wilder.
BlueSkyLA
Would you like a second opinion? Sorry, old joke.
I prefer Jansen also. Definitely more in control not only of his pitches but of his own self. I’d be shocked if the Dodgers were the team prepared to drop $92M on Chapman. This FO hasn’t ponied up that kind of change for anybody yet.
ChaplinBaseball
Pitching is getting out of hand with these salaries….
Cam
Or, the market is catching up with it’s value.
jdubs346
Or 90 m to throw 10-20 pitches a game is ridiculous lol
listofjericho
Considering The state of the Marlins franchise, signing a big name closer is akin to having a condemned house with holes in the roof and a cracked foundation but having really good double-panes storm windows. The fact that the Marlins follow this route is a shining example of why they are a D level franchise.
teufelshunde4
Your being to nice calling the Marlins a D level franchise.. Loria by himself is an F.. Throw in Sampson another F… Marlins would be crazy stupid to spend big on a closer.
Thronson5
The anticipation of all the big trades that possibly could happen and all the big free agent signings that can happen at any moment are killing me haha. These deals need to just happen already so I can just move on with my life already lol
usafcop
I hear you Thronson….my favorite part of the year is the Winter Meetings….I love all the rumors etc
bravesfan9
It baffles me that “top tier” relief pitchers get paid what they do. I’m sure each team can find somebody to come out of the pen and get a couple ground balls and a fly out. But what do i know?
vtadave
Ask Giants fans who watched the meltdown in the NLDS if they agree.
bravesfan9
In some cases, it can be on the coaching staff going with the wrong guy unless the bullpen is depleted. But I guess I can see a team spending a lot of $ on a guy to get the glory or the blame.
slider32
Did you ever watch a game when Mariano was pitching and one with any other closer, that’s your answer. Allen, Chapman, Miller, they are worth every penny they get, there are a lot of closer that can’t do it on the big stage.
bravesfan9
Chapman got bailed out in the WS, So in a lot of cases 100-103 mph don’t mean squat. That’s the biggest stage there is. So if I’m a GM I’m looking at that exact moment because that’s what they should picture in their mind when making a deal.
Mikel Grady
Bad location on hr. Mariano Rivera blew game against marlins . It happens. Miller gave up hr to Ross . Can’t win every battle.
MB923
In 2003? I dont think Rivera blew a game that World Series.
Mikel Grady
Oops meant dbacks 2001
ruckus727
Chapman will get 5/$90M from the Yankees. Jansen probably 5/$80M from someone. Maybe the Nats.
yanks123
Chapman is a beast
SirPartyAnimal
dear lord. 92 mil?! that’s crazy money
JeD242
No way a reliever should be paid that much, it’s crazy.
Yankees2425
cmon lets reel him in
dwilson10
$92 million is way too much for a closer. He will be getting paid more than some of the better SP in the game.
Thronson5
I just can’t even grasp that a closer is about to get around 100 million lol
dewssox79
100 mil for a closer. now what does mike trout get? crazy money
start_wearing_purple
Well Trout already got a deal through 2020. Harper will supposedly set the next benchmark.
stymeedone
I didn’t know the Angels were using Trout out of the pen. Let’s wait to see his save percentage before determining his value.
ccremer2
$92 million better be over 6 years. $92 million over 5 years is way too much
dan-9
Even given the nature of MLB salaries, no reliever would be worth that contract…. except for teams that plan to go deep into the postseason. The Royals last year and the Indians this year showed what a lights-out bullpen can do.
not_brooks
Orioles need to trade Britton to whoever loses out on Chapman/Jansen. Even if it’s the Yankees.
With dominant closers inching toward $100MM contracts, Britton’s value will never be higher. The guy is coming off a historic season, he’s only 29, and he’s got two full seasons of team control on his contract. The O’s could get an absolute HAUL if they deal him now.
Of course, Dan Duquette is the GM equivalent of a pair of jeans. Nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing too risky.
So it won’t happen. And the O’s will finish .500 or so the next two years. And then they’ll fade into oblivion when Britton and Manny Machado depart. Yay.
Dmalsch22
Crazy money being thrown around. I believe had the royals not started the super pen in 2014 maybe salaries would be a little lower for these guys. However MLB players are the select few in the world good enough to play and the absurd amount of money they make for owners, if owners are making as much as they are the players deserve a big chunk, without them they make no money
dewssox79
92 million for a guy whos velocity will go down. i feel bad for whoever signs him
jeffmaz
Was fun to watch when he pitched for the Padres last year. Rodney became a fan fav – hope he does well.
cplovespie
Cubs are supposed to be close to acquiring Wade Davis too. Sign a top close (maybe?) and that would give them a pen of Chapman(just for sake of it) Davis Edwards Jr. Rondon Montgomery
That would be one of the most swing and miss, electric pens in the mlb
Its awesome to see what the cubs can do because they have a young, controllable core
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Ah, so Chapman is the first player to have his agent float a fake contract offer this offseason. We had Samardzija last year and Headley and Shields the year before.
nwh27871
I am pretty sure it’s the Dodgers who offered Chapman that contract. Washington won’t pay that much they’ll end up trading for someone.
hojostache
I think the mystery team is WAS…though it’d have to have a ton of deferred $. I can see the Marlins doing something like that because their owner is an idiot and will just trade him a year or two in.
