The Royals are likely to deal closer Wade Davis, and such a deal could happen quickly, Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan tweets. 2016 was Davis’ third straight dominant year in the Royals’ bullpen — he posted a 1.87 ERA, 9.8 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 over 43 1/3 innings. He is eligible for free agency following next season.
With Mark Melancon receiving a $62MM deal and top closers like Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen reportedly receiving offers for even more, Davis’ trade market figures to be robust. The Dodgers and Cubs have been linked to Davis, as have the Mets (although the Mets could be a somewhat unlikely fit). The Nationals and other teams could potentially get involved in the bidding as well.
Gballer
Cardinals get wade Davis and lorenzo Cain for Kolten Wong and prospects
HallandOates
Lol
Smigaro
This is such a silly proposal. Wong would not be the centerpiece
RedFeather
In KC, he very well could be.
qbass187
What’s Wong with that??
JFactor
I’m a cards fan.
And Davis and Cain make sense for the Cards.
But it’s gonna start with probably Weaver and maybe Bader.
Wong has negative trade value right now.
cab1998
From what I have read Wong would be with Bader, Peralta and Rosenthal and Cardinals would also get Escobar in that as well along with Davis and Cain
thebare
lol that’s what I thought Wong a throw in who could be a throw away
Bob Smiley
not as silly as you think. Wong and prospects.
bencole
No it’s totally silly. It might be the silliest proposal I’ve seen in the comments in a week. No offense, Kolton Wong doesn’t have much trade value.
RedFeather
If the prospects are legit and the guy that the Royals want is not silly. In fact it has been a headline for 2 days. If its that “silly” why has it been coming back up?
bencole
I mean, sure, if Wong is the third piece in deal, then of course. Or if he’s the 2nd piece and the first piece is a total stud, sure. That could could be true of anyone. And a Wong-headlined trade isn’t anything I’ve seen come up in headlines, and there’s a reason why. Because it’s a terrible trade for the Royals and Wong has little to no value. He’s basically spare parts. Dayton Moore is not that stupid. KC is not trading Davis for spare parts.
JT19
Just because Wong’s name keeps coming up doesn’t mean he’s going to be the headliner. I’m sure the Royals would love Martinez/Reyes and that their names keep coming up, but not a guarantee that they are part of the trade.
JKB 2
His name keeps coming up since Cardinal fans keep bringing it up. He may be a throw in but he is not anyones target. In fact Cardinals cannot wait to dump him
JKB 2
Wong as centerpiece is not only silly its a joke
Cardinals17
Ha! Wishful thinking! But I like it!!!
philharmonica
This is a really bad trade idea! Not a chance STL would do that unless Reyes was included.
JFactor
Cain and Davis are only controllable for another year. That won’t get you Reyes.
But someone like Weaver or Wacha can be the types that get moved (and others).
Vedder80
Especially since the qualifying offer has changed.
RedFeather
Well all wrong. Cardinals are out of this one. Typical MO “We are not at a point where we are just a phone call away” – Also was quoted saying they are not shopping Wong and other teams have just asked about him.

thebare
What maybe the entire team minus Prescott
thebare
Wong to the Angels could work out they need a second base men he not bad just ain’t good
Joe Shlabotnik
Better be two serious prospects…Wong is a dime a dozen.
jabmets
Mets get Davis for nimmo and Lugo. Please mets.
georgebell 2
Homer Mets fan. Hahahahaha
landt143
Come on BOSTON GET IT!!!
mvpetro
I don’t think Boston has much left
Kolukonu
Boston is not getting Davis. They already have Kimbrel, and KC will be looking for a top return. Boston isn’t going to trade whatever top prospects they have left for a setup pitcher.
pukelit
They just traded for Thornburg in the pen they won’t trade for Davis
RedFeather
Cardinals.
slider32
This is the time for the Royals to start shopping some of their players who they can’t sign long term. Davis is a good example, he could bring in 2 solid prospects.
phillies012tg
Wade Davis to Chicago cubs maybe? Yes no?
AddisonStreet
For Soler and a prospect, sure.
stl_cards16 2
I think this is the best fit.
1e828d29
Not Ian Happ or eloy Jimenez. Soler and someone else can go to the royals. We aren’t giving up our best prospects for one year of control ever again. If that’s the only option the royals can keep Davis.
justinept
Even as a Cubs fan, I can’t believe soler is nearly enough. Is the injury threat really shattering Davis’s market that badly?
Harvey Wallbanger
Lol! Soler?! Better be a top prospect, or KC hangs up.
1e828d29
Y’all can keep Davis. That’s fine with me. If moncada gets Sale then Happ and Jimenez can replace arrieta. Not going to play this give up the farm for a bullpen arm game for 1 year of control.
mike127
Actually, the reports on the Chicago radio were indicating it would be Davis and more for Soler. Davis is a free agent after the upcoming season and Soler is cheap for a lot more years. As we have already seen today, the contract is at least as important if not more important in trades.
Mikel Grady
Duffy
bencole
Not a chance. Davis is signed for one season and the closer market is not in short supply. And the Royals are cutting payroll. Why give up major pieces when you can spend the $$ and just sign one? Maybe for small market teams this gas value, Cubs have money though. I personally wouldn’t give you Soler straight up for Davis. Not to say he’s not worth Soler (I believe this is his approximate value actually) but there’s just other options the for the Cubs without giving away substantial talent. Teams with money just don’t value trades like that like small market teams do. At least lot well-managed ones.
bencole
*this has value it should say
*at least not well-managed ones.
JKB 2
Oh KC is not hanging up
ba2929
Wasn’t aware that Jerry Crasnick tweeted under the pen name of “Jeff Passan”.
Good to know.
patborders92
Blue jays Davis and Cain for Stroman and Anthony Alford
hammer57
Did you forget the LOL?
tsmizzzle
Yes. Yes he did.
patborders92
From Toronto or KCs side?
hammer57
Toronto. By a mile.
patborders92
stromans not that great and it’s tough to love any of our prospects
partyatnapolis
the tweet is by jeff passan, not crasnick. but hope he ends up on the cubbies
Charkip
Davis to WSH for Espinosa, Robles, and one lower level prospect
mike22
Way to much to give up if you’re the nats
bencole
Yup. Robles won’t be in a deal for a closer.
JFactor
Yup.
Robles is worth more than a closer for one year
neo
Gnats would be smart to grab Davis as they may get shut out on closer market.
Anybody but Dealer Dave getting him please.
Jamespfunk
He’s going to the Nats. Rizzo doesn’t like to spend money on closers and they have the prospects to get a deal done. Maybe throw in Cain too.
Matt Galvin
Duffy or Ventura in it to. Send back to Taylor,Ross and so on.
JKB 2
Why would they just throw in Cain for nothing?
hartman85
Wade Davis and Dyson–
To the Cubs for deal surrounding Soler
OR Nationals for deal surrounding Ross
bucsfan
What is this rarity? A proposed deal in a comments section that actually makes sense/sounds reasonable?
hartman85
Thank you sir
TennVol
Davis, Hosmer and Cain to the Jays for Stroman, Pillar, Alford, Sean Reid Foley, Smoak, and Dalton Pompey.
aussiejaysfan
ummm. so who replaces Stroman? and then we just swap out a centre fielder for a centrefielder with less control. and take out our future corner OF’s and don’t replace them with anyone and lose pitchers to replace them with a closer we already have. What do you expect this trade adds to the Jays?
philharmonica
If this is true it’s either the Cubs Nats or Mets. Likelihood is probably in that order too, the Mets being a distant third possibility. No way he goes to Sox or Cards.
twentyfivemanroster
Dodgers? Verdugo to Royals?
CardinalsNation1
Not wishful thinking. That’s the trade that the Royals called for asking. Davis and Cain for Wong and prospects. Per USA Today
wbaker018
As a (likely biased) Royals fan (but don’t worry my cousins are from DC not trying to screw the nats) Davis to Washington for either Robles, Ross, or Giolito straight up, or to CHC for Ian Happ a pitcher
ASapsFables
Great closer with relatively cheap $10MM contract but will be a FA after this season. What level prospect or young player do the Cubs give up here? Look how much they traded just to get Aroldis Chapman for 3 months.
aamatho18
Honestly, what about Davis and Cain for Robles and Koda Glover?
lamars
Just in from Pasan: Cubs close to dealing for Wade Davis.
Joe 35
Cardinals should go after Quintana
thebare
Davis would be a star setup man for Rondon and Cubs trade For cross town Robertson for for Candela Montero ,Cash $ and Piece Johnson
Bartis
I don’t think Davis would not set up Rondon. It would surely be the other way around.
JKB 2
Thebare your deal makes little sense and Davis will close if obtained.
